I have the novel but didn't read it. I think the show is quite different because the novel seems to be totally focused on the 50's (and a part at the beginning of the 90's) while the show seems to move through decades.
And it's difficult to make a show (or write a novel) about gay men in the mcCarthy era without being at least a bit depressing.
The cast is really good

Excellent show. Finally a show where the gay characters are main characters, and actually played by gay actors too! The story is excellent as well. And of course the sex scenes I'll give it 8/10. I'm kinda sick of is AIDS stories, but I don't mind as long as they're done well, which this is. I didn't read the novel but i think the part of the 80's is very different in the novel. One of the things that Elite did really well was doing an AIDS storyline with a straight female character for a change

Not really, that was addressed in the finale and set up Miss Benny to portray Marco as a trans woman in a prospective season 2. It's worth reading Miss Benny's article about her transition and how she worked with the showrunners to portray Marco's journey to the same stage: time.com/6290125/miss-benny-glamorous-transgender/I'm fairly certain it came down to the numbers: the viewership in the previous post, against whatever it cost to produce the show. Sweet Magnolias, which was behind Lockwood & Co. by nearly 2 million viewers and 3.6M behind Shadow & Bone, got a renewal - presumably because the digital effects for the latter shows bumped up their production costs beyond their share of revenue from viewership. ( Lockwood, in particular, got a raw deal, IMO.) I suspect we should prepare for Heartstopper S3 being the final season - in fact, if it hadn't gotten a double-renewal after S1, I'm not sure it would even have a S3. Actually as a whole, the poor standing of shows with a significant LGBTQ+ presence is worrying. Almost all of them are to be found towards the bottom of the list, with the sole exception of XO, Kitty. What perplexes me is the cancellation of Sex/Life. Was it really so expensive to produce that a renewal wasn't feasible despite its sizable viewership? Heartstopper has one of the highest rate of people watching the show till the end. The number of hours will be never be big because it's barely half an hour per episode but Heartstopper was pretty high on the list of a lot of countries when it was released. And of course it doesn't seem an expensive show. That and the loyal fanbase are enough to carry to three seasons (high school shows always have an expiration date after three or four seasons. LGBT shows always have a more limited appeal than other ones. People complain about Netflix but we would never get that kind of shows on a mainstream tv station. Even a show like Sex education would be too much

Well, there are a lot of "interesting" scenes on this show.
I don't have showtime but i'm thinking in reading the novel (looks depressing but interesting)

Manu Rios will star in the new Netflix show Respira, with Jon Kortajarena's ex Alfonso Bassave. I wonder if they will play gay characters? Well, the show is from one of Elite's creators so there'll be gay characters for sure.

Conversion therapy is generally used on minors (the parents are the ones that force them into) and when an adult look for conversion therapy there are generally religious beliefs behind, he wnats to congraciate with his family or he has problems to accept he is homosexual. John Paul doesn't fit any of those circumstances. If they wanted a dark storyline to John Paul they could do an abusive relationship, of course they tried that and after building it for months they ended it quickly without going nowhere JP just got out of an abusive relationship with PC Kiss That was a total waste of a stoyline. They build up and then they rushed an end

Isn't it a little too late to do a conversion therapy story with John Paul who is an out gay man for more than 15 years?

I think the show was a hit in Spain.
Sometimes with Netflix it feels that you need to have an interenational success to be renewed which is absurd. If the show does well in the home country (and a couple of more countries) and it's not expensive there's no reason to not renew it.
And about slurs, i think Spain is way different (and south america too) from anglosaxon countries. The slur is not derogative in all circumstances and there are a lot of gays who used it regularly (which i don't like).
And i find curious that there were recent homophobic chants on spanish soccer league with little fanfare maybe because the players and coach insulted were supposed straight

Arthur and Marshall were never going to work out. They are too young to be moving in together and both have just come out of the closet. There are more stories than coming out, living together, marrying and having a child. Sorry but this soaps are incredibly lazy in their writing. Arthur and Marshall are teenagers there are plenty of storylines to write for them

The show was not an international hit, but it did very well in Spain. The problem is that it was a lot of controversies and bad press around it, something really difficult to understand in such innofensive show

Well, there are several articles in Spain about how difficult it is to understand why this show is a big hit (basically because it is a mess, and it was a mess from the beginning)

Curiously there were manly shows like Oz or Spartacus that weren't shy on their male to male affection.
I think the subject will be more and more common because homosexuality in male sports is a theme that is not going to dissapear and probably will be more prominent in the following years

I just hope this won't end like Love Victor that after being a hit for one season went downhill for putting too much focus on other characters (on a pretty short show)

The hours are not as important as the percentage of people who ended the show.
The big problem with 1899 was that only a 32% of the people who start watching the show complete all the episodes.
One of the reasons Hearstopper was such a hit was because it has a very high engagement. Of course Heartstopper is a show cheap to produce and that's a big diference.
I don't know if Smiley will be renewed (it was a hit in Spain with all it's absurd controversies, never a show so innofensive generated so many controversies) even if it was not an international success, but the fact that it's a show without that many costs make it easier to happen
