This is a place for us to discuss upcoming TV projects where we know or suspect there will be a sizable gay presence, before that show comes to fruition and 'earns' its own thread. (Or the case may be that there is in fact no queer male presence, or the project fails to make it past the pilot stage.)

To kick things off: There's supposed to be a French remake of Queer as Folk, but no news on that project for two years now - may be dead in the water. We will however be getting the NBC-Peacock revival of QAF set in New Orleans. www.out.com/television/2021/9/02/cast-announcement-peacock-queer-as-folk-rebootAnother project is the Tom Swift-led spin-off of the CW's Nancy Drew series. Tom is a "Black, gay, billionaire inventor who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. He takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him". Out bi actor Tian Richards who played the role on the main series will reprise it as the lead of the spin-off named after his character. It will be the network's first series led by a queer male. Lastly, there's been some speculation about the character of Jonathan Kent on another CW series, Superman & Lois. Jonathan, who is one of their twin sons, was recently announced to be gay in the comics, while the TV version has notably not had a female love interest all through the first season, unlike his outwardly nerdier twin Jordan. The show also does not have any regular LGBTQ+ characters.

One of Us is Lying, a NBC-Peacock adaptation of the eponymous Karen McManus novel, should include a gay subplot. It is currently in production in New Zealand and is expected to wrap late next month, so the debut probably won't be until 2022. The series will consist of 8 episodes. Summary: At Bayview High, five students—Simon (Mark McKenna), Bronwyn (Marianly Tejada), Nate (Cooper van Grootel), Addy (Annalisa Cochrane), and Cooper (Chibuikem Uche)—are given detention. Simon, known for starting an online gossip group with his friend Janae (Jessica McLeod) to snitch on his classmates, suffers a sudden and fatal allergic reaction. The other four students had reasons to kill Simon, along with individual motives, and after it is determined his death was not an accident, an investigation ensues. Spoiler for the story! Cooper is secretly gay and his boyfriend Kris (Karim Diane) is also part of the cast, so presumably this gay romance is intact. Brief preview: http://instagram.com/p/CRj8bFNAnzI

Netflix released a trailer for sitcom Pretty Smart, which premieres on Oct. 8. One of the regulars is played by out actor Michael Hsu Rosen (last appeared in Tiny Pretty Things, where he played straight, although that show did have notable gay representation). The character he plays here comes across as gay, although a quick Google search didn't turn up any confirmation beyond revealing he's Jayden, "a fame-obsessed social media influencer." ETA: I guess it is confirmed: "Rosen will portray Jayden,a former child-model who now makes his living as a social media influencer. He’s confident, generous and the hottest gay man alive according to an online poll which he created and votes on daily." http://instagram.com/p/CT28fXvr9zt

Oooh, sounds good. I love Tuc Watkins. He's great on the comedy Black Monday, playing opposite real life boyfriend Andrew Rannells.

The Peacock remake of Queer as Folk has started filming in New Orleans. The Netflix remake of Rebelde looks set to have a lesbian romance, which historically makes it less likely there'll be gays which, for a musical series, would be a massive omission, so I hope they'll give us both. http://instagram.com/p/CWD5pVTFEe3

Hope you don't mind I moved your post into this thread - I made the initial post about Rebelde in the wrong thread, and this one is more appropriate. If it's true there are only lesbians, it's a big mistake, and frankly incredible. Even in the days when homosexuality was taboo on television, we'd get coded gays in certain types of shows - musicals being one of them. For a musical series in 2022 to be devoid of any queer male representation would be a travesty.

Netflix has announced a reboot of '90s Aussie high school drama Heartbreak High for an 8-episode first season that's already begun production and due to debut next year. More details at the link, but I've extracted the most pertinent casting. Dusty is definitely a queer male character and I guess Darren is nonbinary? I'm not so sure whether Ca$h's identity struggle has to do with his sexuality (the actor identifies as he/him and appears to be white). There's also a lesbian character. - DUSTY (Josh Heuston) [He/Him] (Dive Club, Thor: Love and Thunder, Finally Me) is so gorgeous it hurts. He’s the bass player in an indie rock band and has slept with half the girls – and even a few boys – at school, but underneath the hot aesthetic he’s just as insecure as the rest of us mere humans.
- DARREN (James Majoos) [They/Them/He/Him] (Fangirls, Grand Horizons, Vivid White) is the warmest snarky shit-stirrer you’re ever likely to meet. Whilst they are outwardly brash, inwardly Darren fears they are a hard person to love.
- CA$H (Will McDonald) [He/Him] (Riot, Home and Away, Young Rock) is a drug dealer, food delivery driver, pet duck owner, eshay. Beneath the mullet, Ca$h is a complex young man quietly struggling with his identity.

Another Cruel Intentions TV series adaptation is in the works at Amazon's IMDb TV streaming service. The original film had a minor gay subplot (playing to harmful tropes) between closeted jock Greg (Eric Mabius) and campy out Blaine (Joshua Jackson). The NBC pilot, a sequel to the film, that failed to make it to series five years ago eschewed gay characters in favour of a lesbian romance. What will this new series bring? deadline.com/2021/10/cruel-intentions-series-reboot-imdb-tv-1234848051/

Looks like the upcoming Paramount+ Latin America series Cecilia will have a gay character or two, although it's clear they will be only supporting roles because it's literally the very last line in the cast description: Full description here: www.prensario.net/35542-Paramount-original-series-emCeciliaem-concluded-filming-in-Mexico.note.aspxIt's an 8-part series which will premiere on 21 December. Leo Deluglio who played one-half of the gay couple on La Dona 2 appears but not in one of the gay roles.

Apparently the show will have a gay storyline with Luka. Also speculation online that he will have a gay relationship with Sebas the villain on the show. It is not hinted in promos but spoilers say Sebas will seduce Luka, therefore making Sebas bisexual. We will have to wait and see what happens.

It's on Netflix, so English subs should be guaranteed.
Hopefully they do deliver on gay content, although I do cringe a little at how they almost always inevitably make the bi guy a villain, when bi male representation onscreen is exceedingly rare. It's almost as if they think male bisexuality is an indicator of villainy. It'd be different if we had one or two bi male villains among a dozen bi male characters, but that ratio seems to work in the opposite direction.
But yeah - they really need the queer male representation, in this of all series. A musical without gays is like an ocean without water. That's one stereotype they really shouldn't attempt to get rid of, because it really is ubiquitous.

Update from someone who skimmed the new Rebelde: - No gay male pairing, only lesbians. - Female nudity (only) in a straight sex scene.
I won't be watching.
