I admit I sighed when I saw that they were introducing a new Sugden - it's a welcome move, but I didn't think it'd have the impact with only Victoria left in the village and I presumed he was a cousin (son to Jack Sr's late brother, Joe). Then I saw he will be openly gay and a half-brother of Victoria and Robert. So you know what is going to happen now - Aaron is going to get with two brothers. Rather surprising they would make him gay but it does feel a bit lazy after losing two gay characters and trying to live off Robert's legacy. Why not just recast Rob if you need a half-brother to Vic and love interest for Aaron?

Unless they are still hoping Ryan Hawley will return, a Robert return would have made more sense if he's going to be shackled to Aaron. Sad to say this character will likely last for a year or two years at most - a huge waste. We know what happens to anyone who is with Aaron. And I don't know if Danny Miller will want to have any kissing scenes or intimacy.

And I don't know if Danny Miller will want to have any kissing scenes or intimacy. Somehow I think if Ryan H was going to return, they would've already written him back in. He had a very devoted fanbase and he's the only actor whom Danny M came across as comfortable with during intimate scenes. I'm not opposed to the retcon of a Sugden, a tragically decimated family, but I'm not thrilled by the fact that John's not coming in with a husband/boyfriend and the only gay male left on canvas is Aaron - besides Arthur (if indeed he's still on the show). But you're probably right about the likely longevity of this new character. It's a common problem for new characters across soaps, but especially the gays. They will probably give John a big debut and do nothing with him for months before he's written out - just like Ethan, Nicky and Suni. Hopefully he won't get a fatal exit like Ethan - even if it would be in keeping with the Sugdens' tragic history. ETA: Nicky and Suni exited in today's episode.

I still think they were planning to give him the abuse story they gave Tom. Glad we avoided that at least. I liked the actor. Another waste. I have seen some fan speculation that this pairing will be what brings Robert back, but I'm not sure we'll ever see him again.

Happily, Alfie Clarke (Arthur) is back to filming for Emmerdale - although realistically he won't air until later this year (probably late September at the earliest). https://www.instagram.com/p/C9w-z_MIedr

Have to say I'm surprised to see them give Arthur a love interest. Probably is a short-term plot as carld2 has suggested but at least it's something, especially when you consider not too long ago I feared they had written him out permanently.
