The show is definitely exceeding my expectations in terms of buzz. The response from critics and general public have been a lot stronger than i anticipated.
It's hard to judge since we don't get numbers for streaming shows, but at this point, I would be very surprised if we don't get a second season.
Also, judging by how well they took the criticism aimed at "Love, Simon" and how they tried to fix them in "Love, Victor", I'm confident they'll try to do the same with season two (if we get there), especially now that they are on Hulu.
I'm on ep. 7 still, and I'm loving the show. Victor is adorable and most of the side characters are really charismatic. You can definitely see that they pushed back on a couple of situations to stay within the Disney brand "restriction", but it haven't detract anything from my enjoyment. The show is also gradually getting better, which always a great thing
Can't wait for the final 3 episodes since (from what I read) they are the best ones

Michael Cimino charms in Love, Victor, a sincere and sweet - if safe - spin-off with a lot of heart.

I actually loved the pilot... it has all the cliches you would expect, but I couldn’t help but smile the whole way through. It’s the kind of mindless fun I’ve been craving for while (after binging so many intense shows during these quarantine months lol) Response on twitter looks really strong! It’s actually trending in Brazil (#03) and we don’t even have Hulu lol I don't think it's bad, and I'm not the least bit surprised that it's trending. It was always going to be popular since it fills a void that isn't being catered to. Right now, this is the only show with a queer male lead character anywhere in the Western world and it's more accessible (in terms of humour) than the only other offering, Everything's Gonna Be Okay, which is currently on hiatus until 2021. Unlike the plentiful offerings centered on queer women across mainstream and streaming networks, there is literally nothing else out there in the market for queer males except Thai BL series. I do think it could have pushed the envelope a bit, but I chalk that down to being sanitized for Disney+ during production before it was shifted to Hulu, which can definitely afford to be a bit more edgy. (We'll have to see how that works out in season 2 if it's renewed. Will they stick on the safe side with the Disney+ vibe or be more daring and take risks?) Another side-effect of Disney+ is that the tone of the whole series is inconsistent. You can tell that the show-runners were constantly worrying whether something was too risque for Disney+, but they must have already outlined the episodes and couldn't gut the plot completely so instead decided to sanitize whatever they could. You can see the changes between the pilot script and what was filmed: the original nickname for Felix was "poop dick" but they changed it to the more euphemistic "lone stone", and the scene where Andrew parades in front of Victor in boxer-briefs became much less in-your-face and covered up (he still has his shorts on). I also want to say that it's possible for a show to be happy and uplifting without necessarily being intense OR mindless. Those are both extremes and I feel like Love, Victor wants to do both and ends up with the tonal mess I feel plagued the series. Well, I was not surprised it was trending per se, I was surprised it was trending IN Brazil where the show isn't even out lol Those changes you mentioned (Andrew in boxer-briefs, or Felix's nickname) are quite irrelevant to me personally, but I totally get what you mean and I would also love to see them pushing the envelope on season 2 with Hulu producing it... and I think it would be great to see the show becoming more "mature" as Victor gets older, more confident and "mature" himself. Hopefully It gets more seasons! I haven't watched anything other than the first episode, so I can't comment on the whole show, but the first one had a really good pace and kept me entertained and invested the whole way through. Can't wait for the rest of them!

Expected as much that he would stay in the closet til the end of the season at least. I hope he doesn't string along that girl Mia for the entire season at least, but that sounds to be the case from the synopsis. I am glad that Simon will show up, it will help link the show to the movie and it would be stupid not to use the actor when he is the executive producer already Judging by some of her little scenes on the the trailer, it looks like Mia will have a love interest of her own (played by Mason Gooding)

I'm sure an eventual Victor kiss would be a big moment on the show (like it was in the movie), so I was not really expecting them to "spoil" that on the trailer. What really surprised me was them not having Simon on the trailer (we did get a glimpse of Blue though!) The show looks cute. It has a pretty similar tone to the movie (excepted), but it looks like Victor explores more of his own dilemmas and family dynamics here, which was not really explored in the movie.

Is there still no semblance of a gay romance on this show? It's been months... Yes. Even though both Serginho and Guga were really prominent throughout the show up until now (they are really cute together), their relationship has been developing a lot more lately (Guga was on a bunch of different storylines that are now ending and his sexuality has been taking center stage on the show now). The actor who plays Guga just confirmed they are airing #Guguinho's first kiss soon and that a lot of new developments are coming for the character.

The biggest problem about starting threads on Brazilian novelas here is that Rede Globo (the top network here, which produces all the big telenovelas) has a EXTREMELY strict stance on copyright. They have their own streaming service and it's really hard to find their shows anywhere else on the internet cause they block everything. I posted about Malhação because I found someone posting on Vimeo, otherwise I would not have posted. There's a new telenovela that's starting soon called "A Dona do Pedaço" that will feature a gay couple with actors Caio Castro and Malvino Salvador. Malhação was the last taboo for gay characters on Brazilian telenovelas. As the big 'outcry' over LGBT representation from conservatives in Brazil have always been that "telenovelas are turning kids gay", Globo was always very reticent in adding gay characters on the show that had a huge tween, teen and even kids following. They did some little experiences with small characters over the years, but only last year with more prominent regular characters. Thanks for the recap, I hadn't realized there were so many LGBT characters in Brazilian telenovelas over the years. Of the ones you listed, I immediately recognized the Junior/Zeca storyline - and that only for the wrong reason, the international outcry it generated when they censored the couple's only kiss which IIRC came at the culmination of their storyline. I don't think Globo was so strict with their copyright back then, because I remember following the storyline on YT and being massively disappointed when their kiss was cut. (I also fell in love with Bruno Gagliasso, who I found breathtakingly beautiful.) I seem to have missed other stories over the intervening years. I think Globo must have started clamping down on copyright around the time Imperio was on air. I remember a character played by Romulo Arantes Neto trying to seduce Claudio on Imperio with a striptease outside his window but it was clear Romulo's character was playing him, which pissed me off, and then I never found another Imperio clip on YT. I certainly did not know Claudio eventually found love with Klebber Toledo, a more than adequate substitute! (Klebber's current storyline on Verão 90 as a male stripper is a role he was born for!) Insensato Coração was also on my radar but for Jonatas Faro who spent a lot of time in Speedos or briefs - I thought he was the bee's knees. (He pinged my gaydar so hard.) The gay storyline seems to have not merited any clips on YT. Now that you mention the remaining titles, they do ring a bell (especially the last two) but I assumed, in the absence of clips, that they were insubstantial storylines and/or offensive portrayals which is why they never found international traction. Viewers outside Brazil can view some clips of the novelas on the official Globo site (that's how I'm following the stripper storyline on Verão 90) but not the full episodes. Hopefully the upcoming gay storyline with Caio Castro will feature to some extent on there. I find it ironic that Malhação steered clear of gay characters/storylines back when they used to be more sexually-forward and incorporate nudity, but are now becoming gay-inclusive at a time when, across the board, Brazilian novelas are becoming a lot less sexually explicit. Conservatives would consider a fully-clothed gay couple holding hands explicit but not a male stripper who actually strips naked - yet today it's the former that makes it into the novelas while the strippers (oh so frustratingly) retain their modesty. I mean, I definitely remember Amor a vida, not for the gays but for Caio Castro's nude scenes but Klebber is never shown naked on Verão despite playing a stripper, LOL!
Yep! Junior and Zeca’s ending was was very bittersweet with the censoring of the kiss. Still, it was a very impactful storyline for me as a teen. I also fell in love with Bruno... he’s still super gorgeous as an older man. He’s become very outspoken for liberal causes (including gay rights) and has a beautiful family.
Globo as become more strict regarding copyrights of their material right when they started having their own streaming service (probably around 4 or 5 years ago), but they've always been strict. Império was a bit messy with their storyline (that Romulo Arantes character pissed me off too), but the ending was quite good and Claudio found a much better replacement with Kleber Toledo. I don’t watch Verão 90 (even though I like the 90s nostalgia of it and the silly humor) but I’ve seen some scenes with Kleber lol
Insensato Coração suffered from having bad actors on their gay storyline because, otherwise, it could’ve been much better lol.
Regarding Jonatas Faro, I have a feeling you might be right... I have a felling he’s gay too... he’s been out of the air for quite a while and I’ve heard he’s been on a few mental health facilities (probably dealing with depression). He has a son with another actress but that was his only public relationship I can remember. He does musical theatre as well... I saw him in Wicked and he was SO HOT wearing those costumes! Lol
All the storylines I mentioned on my previous post were big ones... all had substance and a good amount of airtime. The last one (Orgulho e Paixão) was actually posted HERE on the forum and is SUPER sweet and cute. This TUMBLR ACCOUNT has their entire storyline with subtitles Globo’s website do feature some clips on their website, but as you said, not the entire storylines (which is quite unfortunate for viewers abroad). On the topic of nudity, I’m not sure how much of it has a correlation with more liberal storylines... I feel like , overtime, showing gratuitous nudity has become “tacky” in most viewers’ eyes and I feel like Globo has been trying to break away from that. At the same time, they also have been trying to be more socially conscious and embrace diversity more (not just in terms of sexuality, but also by adding more non-Caucasian actors and actors with different body times). They still do show some skin on some telenovelas (especially later at night) but definitely a lot less than before.

I feel like showing "physical contact" is the last barrier in LGBTQ representation on Brazilian TV (specially on a show that skews so young like Malhação). It seems like the general (conservative) public are getting more and more comfortable with gay characters on their telenovelas, but scenes with more physical contact still divide A LOT of Brazilians and I feel like TV networks are taking their time with this. Having said that, I was actually very surprised they showed a kiss at all (even more surprised that we didn't have to wait until the end of the season to see it). Even though they are not really all over each other, I actually think they had a lot of little scenes where a subtle kiss on the face or hug helped pushing the limits on this matter. This storyline/season has broken so many taboos for Malhação and Brazilian teen shows in general, that I'm actually very confident about the future... This new season is starting with two great gay characters (one of them being heavily featured) and, even though I'm unsure about how they'll handle intimacy between them, we're definitely heading in the right direction. Let's hope you're right and we'll see some progression on the new season; there's been too much disappointment - and quite frankly, in many cases, regression - when it comes to gay male representation on TV. I'm curious about what you said about gay characters on Brazilian telenovelas - I haven't see any threads started for them? I was under the impression they were all in Spanish-speaking Latin America.
Answering your question, Brazil has had many gay characters/storylines over the years. I found this article from 2015 (a bit out of date, but still interesting) that points out that in 43 years (1970-2013) of producing telenovelas, Rede Globo has had 62 telenovelas featuring LGBT characters: Gays - 76 characters Lesbians - 24 characters Bissexuals - 16 characters (13 of them being men) Transgenderl - 9 characters With no specific sexuality - 1 character
1970s - 6 telenovelas 1980s - 11 telenovelas 1990s - 13 telenovelas 2000s - 22 telenovelas 2010 to 2013 - 9 telenovelas
From my experience, the first gay storyline I remember was in the 90s, when they had a interracial couple in "A Próxima Vitima" ("The Next Victim"). That telenovela was extremely popular and the storyline caused a lot of commotion... I was a young kid back them. On the 2000s we had a lot of gay characters that were prominent but sort of "asexual", which was quite frustrating. Still, we still had some couples like in "Paraiso Tropical" (2008), "Páginas da Vida" (2006), "Mulheres Apaixonadas" (2003) and "As Filhas da Mãe" (2001). The big gay storyline of that decade was Junior & Zeca in "America" (2005)... that was a major storyline and the first time they got the public rooting for a gay couple. As a teen, it had a HUGE impact on me.
The 2010s saw a HUGE increase in LGBT charaters and couples on telenovelas. It was also only this decade that gay couples on telenovelas started getting more "intimate" scenes like kisses or sex. Some of the most successful gay couples include:
Thales and Julinho (so cute!) in "Ti-Ti-Ti" (2010) Hugo and Eduardo in "Insensato Coração" (2011)
Felix-Niko-Erom (a gay triangle lol) in "Amor à Vida" (2013) Claudio and Leo in "Imperio" (2014)
Ivan and Sergio in "Babilonia" (2015) André and Tolentino in "Liberdade Liberdade" (2016) Otavio and Luccino in "Orgulho e Paixão" (2018) Malhação was the last taboo for gay characters on Brazilian telenovelas.

Why do they never kiss or hold hands or act like the other couples who are always all over each other physically? I've never seen such repressed gay teenaged boys. The each hug and kiss the girls in their life more than they do each other. Yes it seems like there was exactly ONE kiss in the whole storyline - and even that was brief and partially obscured. There was a cute scene where Santi was seated and leaning into Michael that I found quite intimate, but apart from that - nothing. It doesn't really fill one with hope for the new season where a gay character is supposed to be one of the principal protagonists. I know Brazil is in the grip of a very homophobic administration - maybe that has something to do with it? I feel like showing "physical contact" is the last barrier in LGBTQ representation on Brazilian TV (specially on a show that skews so young like Malhação). It seems like the general (conservative) public are getting more and more comfortable with gay characters on their telenovelas, but scenes with more physical contact still divide A LOT of Brazilians and I feel like TV networks are taking their time with this.
