It's been certified 🍅 FRESH on RottenTomatoes Critics Consensus
Michael Cimino charms in Love, Victor, a sincere and sweet - if safe - spin-off with a lot of heart.

The show is definitely exceeding my expectations in terms of buzz. The response from critics and general public have been a lot stronger than i anticipated.
It's hard to judge since we don't get numbers for streaming shows, but at this point, I would be very surprised if we don't get a second season.
Also, judging by how well they took the criticism aimed at "Love, Simon" and how they tried to fix them in "Love, Victor", I'm confident they'll try to do the same with season two (if we get there), especially now that they are on Hulu.
I'm on ep. 7 still, and I'm loving the show. Victor is adorable and most of the side characters are really charismatic. You can definitely see that they pushed back on a couple of situations to stay within the Disney brand "restriction", but it haven't detract anything from my enjoyment. The show is also gradually getting better, which always a great thing
Can't wait for the final 3 episodes since (from what I read) they are the best ones

I don't really know if I would say Love, Victor fixes the problems of Love, Simon. Yes we get a POC lead whose family are more religious and conservative - but outside of the grandparents, the parents don't strike me as the bigoted type. Best friend Felix doesn't even flinch (considering his pilot concerns that befriending Benji might encourage rumours about Victor's sexuality), the a-hole jock Andrew's only issue is Victor leading Mia on, and Mia herself doesn't seem too pissed. I guess we'll find out next season how everyone deals. The rom-com genre makes it difficult to have blatantly homophobic references.
Brian Tanen also did another interview with Digital Spy where he defends the move from Disney+ to Hulu and says this will free them up to explore more of teen sexuality - emphasis on sex - as the characters, and their fans, grow with the show. So maybe season 2 won't be so cookie-cutter and confused in tone.

I have to say that i'm positively surprised for what i saw. Yes, it has Disney all over it and sometimes it's a little preachy but this is a kids show that can grow.
I have to be honest, i found the criticism of Love, Simon utterly ridiculous. Yes, the lead was a white guy but in the main cast there are more people of colour than whites, and the whole positive tone was intentional, it's not bad that from time to time you get a positive film without too much drama. If you are 15 and has doubts Love, Simon is a perfect movie to watch.
And i know teen shows put a lot of emphasis on sex right now, but the truth is not all teenagers are the same. There teens who end the high school years with a lot of sexual experiences and other who are virgin. I always found weird that in most teenage shows or everybody is having sex or everybody is a monk.
Without too much drama the show is very entertaining and has room for a lot themes in the following season (and even more if they have more freedom with the themes), not all teen shows have to be Euphoria or 13 RW, because in the name of realism everything ends being over the top.
And i really liked they have a latino lead character. A lot of people talk about black characters but if there's a community neglected on american tv and films are the latinos who are as much as blacks in percentage but whose representation is a lot lower and generally with a lot of estereotypes.
I find Victor a charming character and the chemistry with Benji is very good. My idea of the rest of the cast is not formed because i barely watched clips and were focused on those two characters.
To be honest, i think going to Hulu was the best idea, this show seemed destined to be a big faliure and they seemed not really interested in promoted it, and with the change everything fell into place and people are liking it (and of course there's room in a second season to correct mistakes and making and develop themes without changing that much the tone). Maybe Disney have good intentions but frankly after watching Andi Mack is pretty obvious they are not ready to commit to a gay character and even less to a gay character that is the lead of the show
