I liked the show but I felt it lacked something. I don't know what it is. I think it was the Disney restrictions. I'm glad a possible second season will have freedom to go deeper.

I hope they add time to the show go from 30 min to 45 and from 10 to at least 13 episodes

Well, that happens all the time with adult characters so it's not surprising that happens on teenage shows (specially when most of the actors are at least a couple of years older than the characters, and that's the best case scenario).
For me it was one of the most positive results in a good while, yes it's a kid's show and it's very clear it was made to Disney, but it showed that you don't need to go over the top to be entertaining (i didn't watch the movie but that's something that happens with the novel too, there's nothing flashy happening but it's very entertaining). More grow up material would be perfect but i hope they don't go for the shock value because right now it's quite refreshing a show that doesn't feel the need to hit in the guts their audience.
There's a lot of room for improvement but it was way better than expected, and i really liked that instead of going with the guy with doubts that the trailer seemed to indicate, it was pretty clear from the first scene the Victor really really liked Benji.
I remember that one of the things that surprise me the most of the Skam france storyline was how romantic it was. It's not that i like romance that much, but it was refreshing a gay storyline that was not shy on showing romance. And i think we can get that on this show too (even 13 RW had some of that in that creepy/romantic way Charlie asked Alex to prom).
We don't know the numbers, but given the number of fan videos and fanfiction in so little time it's pretty obvious that it was way more successful than anybody was expecting (it's true that the expectatives were very low because it seemed that Disney had zero interest on this show)

I just saw season 2 of The Politician on Netflix and they still make Ben Platt shave his chest there even though he's definitely old enough to have chest hair (and his extremely hairy arms and legs are left intact). Many American actors shave their chests, even though they're not playing teens; I think it's more to do with the established aesthetic of male beauty on American TV.
I think Love, Victor is almost certain to be renewed. Not making it available in other countries was a big mistake on their part, because now everyone outside the US is going to watch illegally and they're going to lose out on that revenue, but I think the US audience on Hulu alone will be enough to move the needle. They successfully plugged a huge gap in television programming - like I said, there's only one other gay male-led show anywhere in the Western world (and that one has a very unique and not widely understood brand of humour), plus this one has the timely bonus of featuring a POC family in the lead.

Well finally got round to it, and it was twee but ok least they didn't shy away from the kissing well kind of..., its was lacking alot of substance imo, but then that will have been the Disney influence.
There was far too much of the other characters Given the title in my honest, and i can almost see the direction the plot will take in season two, but i am hopeful i will be surprised seeing as its on Hulu.
we shall wait and see

On a teen show characters need to grow up so i'm all for it, but i think part of the success is curiously that it's quite an innocent show in comparission with edgy recent teen shows.
When i watched the trailer i thought it would be about the struggle of the main character if he was gay or not, but that was never in cause. He struggle to accept himself but the show was quite bold showing his desire for Benji from the first scene.
I think they nailed with the cast (they have very good chemistry) and get some things right. Felix is the stereotypical nerdy funny friend but instead of seasons and seasons of pursuing the popular girl he got it on season one. They didn't drag the coming out or even getting Victor and Benji together (i don't know if it was for fear of being cancelled, to be fair the success was quite surprising, even when the end of season is a clear cliffhanger).
There's a lot of space to improve the show without changing that much, probably they need to introduce some characters, Benji needs to get a revamp because right now he is mostly Victor's fantasy (fortunately they show hints that he had a rough past).
So yes, they should get rid of Disney's vibe but without going to dark or too edgy, because even there are teenagers who experiment a lot of things during adolescence you have shows like Euphoria, 13 reasons why or Elite (and to be honest i can enjoy a teen show without going too dark).
And at least we escaped the cliché of bully/victim falling in love (lately is quite repetitive and unrealistic specially because shows don't go with soft bullying).
I like the fact that they didn't make Andrew a full villain. Antagonism gives a lot of room for storylines but i think some teen shows go too far, specially when they tend to backtrack and redeem the bad guy/girl after making them do things that are hardly redeemable.
The cast is diverse so there are a lot of room for introduce themes, and it's not that common to have a latino family in the center. I am curious how they are going to treat the small brother, because the grandpa soft displays of homophobia were throwed at him who unlike Victor seem to show not so masculine traits making grandpa uncomfortable

Watched the first season, not too bad, but definitely wished they picked up the pace a bit. As others have mentioned, you can definitely see the Disney influence. Hopefully, the next season would actually go more edgy instead of sticking with the current formula since it is "working"
I really hope next season they keep Michael Cimino in long wavy hair. He looks so much better in the promo magazine pics than in the show.

He looks so much better in the promo magazine pics than in the show. I hope they don't go edgy. There are a lot of edgy teen shows right now and in my opinion part of the success was because the show didn't try to shock anyone, just telling a story. I hope they try more mature storylines and develop the characters, but don't go too dark or explicit (most teens don't live on a disney movie, but they don't live in an Euphoria episode neither), basically let the storyline grow at the time the characters grow. Getting rid of the Disney vibe without changing the spirit of the first season. For once i would like a feel good show (with a gay storyline, in this case the main storyline) They have plenty of themes to develop, starting with the reaction of the family. It's pretty clear it won't be the same reaction Simon had in the movie, but on the other hand i don't expect a bad reaction either, probably they'll need some time to adjust to the news (specially the father was fearing the little brother was the one to bring that kind of news). I find curious that they didn't drag the coming out stoyline or even getting with Benji, but the truth is they didn't drag the Felix and Lake storyline either (that's the kind of storyline, akward friend/popular girl, that teen shows spend seasons to develop). One of the things i liked of the novel is that it didn't have any splashy storyline but it was highly entertaining

I completely agree with what you said. I didn't mean edgy as going super dark like some other shows. I'm probably not expecting next season to be super explicit, but I do expect more sex, since I expect Victor and Felix to progress further in each of their relationships.
