It's probably the hit show nobody seen that coming (because frankly it seemed Disney had zero intentions to promote it). And we all know that shows with a gay lead are not an easy sell. Even on this forum the hopes were very low. And i have a not so great reaction to the trailer, which by the way seemed more a guy with doubts about his sexual orientation pursuing an heterosexual relationship than a gay guy coming to terms with his same sex attraction (but on the show the very first scene with Benji change totally that impression)
Just watching only youtube it's pretty obvious that connected really well with a part of the audience (and it did very fast), there were a lot of fan videos from the very beginning. Even Andrew (and the combo Andrew/Mia) has a good bunch of fans. And talking about Andrew i think it was the right thing to make him cocky but not a full time bully, you don't need an unredeemeable villain to make an antagonist.

I was thinking he looked incredibly young in those videos (of course he did, they are from 2014)

www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tvs-top-5-how-do-cop-shows-move-forward-love-simon-creators-hulu-spinoff-1298118Interesting interview with Love, Victor show runners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Starts at 42:54 For those who don't want to listen to it all: The plan was always going to be working on feedback from the Love, Simon movie (e.g. Simon being privileged, facing few problems and already having established friends) - which of course most viewers have picked up on rather than initial rumours that the TV show would be a Leah on the Offbeat adaptation. Writer's room was one of the first things set up for the show, with specific interest sought out for Hispanic and LGBTQ writers. The showrunners also consulted high schoolers, especially those in GSAs, to seek their feedback on the authenticity of the characters and their issues. (Unsurprisingly a few found the show too tame for their personal tastes!) The main effect of having the show planned for Disney+ rather than Hulu was that a few raunchier jokes were taken out and the language toned down (Disney+ also allows 1 'shit' each episode) - otherwise, the show was still generally aligned with what the writers intended, a relative slow burn where the issues become more mature as the characters grow up with the audience as well. Love, Victor was pitched and taken onboard while Disney+ was still in its conceptualisation phase, hence it was less clear-cut the platform would be very strictly family-friendly. But the showrunners did seem to have an idea the show might be moved as it was under production. ---SEASON TWO AND OTHER FUTURE STUFF BELOW--- One of the things Hulu execs were vocal about when season 2 was pitched was when the characters would start having sex. Based off this interview it seems we will at least get conversations about this 'in a relatively early stage' of the season. The show will absolutely not touch on the COVID-19 pandemic nor incorporate elements of it. However, there is some exploration of how to develop Mia and Andrew's stories further - not necessarily by directly referencing the current protests against racial injustice and police brutality, but nevertheless at least incorporating some of those conversations into the show. How faith affects Victor's family processing his coming out will also play a role in season 2.

Having existing friends was seen as a problem? I always thought that was more realistic. I hate shows where a character is new to school, and they suddenly meet their new best friend and they will die for each other right away. For example: 13 Reason Why introduced new characters that were willing to cover up a murder for someone they barely know.

Why ‘Love, Victor’ Star Michael Cimino Took a Gay Role Against Industry AdviceHulu's leading man is extremely passionate about LGBTQ rights and Latinx representation. www.indiewire.com/2020/07/love-victor-michael-cimino-gay-tv-lgbtq-1234571596/“I had plenty of racism thrown at me. All the little kids in elementary school used to be like, ‘Oh, he eats bugs because he’s brown.’ They used to throw me on the floor and kick me,” he said. “It made me who I am today.

How come there isn't an official renewal of a second season yet?

It was Hulu's biggest hit in a good while so there's no doubt it'll be a second season. I suppose that when the coronavirus crisis will be more controlled they'll give more details of the second season.
I watched the whole season and they were very lucky. It's pretty obvious that Disney was behind this (Benji's screentime is the biggest clue) fortunately they make very very explicit with Víctor from the first scene and that helped a lot. It helped this was on a platform and not on traditional tv, because i think it benefitted a lot of binge watching. The first episodes are quite slow, and even they make quite clear the Víctor was fooling himself, the direction they took was pure Disney, make the storyline loooong before something happens.
Fortunately that changes in the middle of the season, and by the end they did exactly the opposite of what you expect of a Disney show, instead of dragging the storyline they rushed it, Víctor kissed Benji, Víctor starts to date Benji, Lake and Felix became official and Víctor comes out on the cliffhanger.
And in my oppinion that's a good sign, they have thing to tell and they don't want to stay in the same place forever (it's a good change in comparission of the two seasons of Andi Mack needed only for Cyrus and TJ holding hands).
When i say they were lucky i was thinking in the cast. The cast has very good chemistry.
On the other hand they will benefit a lot of a longer second season because they will probably need to introduce new characters and they need to develop the ones the have. We know Víctor, we know his family and we even know Mia, but the rest are totally unknown. We have hints of Felix (which is a very likeable character), Lake and Benji (he has little screentime for such important character but at least it was very productive screentime) and absolutely nothing of Andrew. So there's a lot of work to do.
I liked the show for what it is (and it was quite refreshing they avoided the shock value and it's like to watch a teen gay storyline which is not build around bullying) and the most positive thing is that it became obvious that you can get a show with a gay main character and be successful (against all odds)

He truly cares and has a deep connection to Mia, but she's definitely not getting the "slow-motion-with-sexy-soundtrack" treatment lol

How come there isn't an official renewal of a second season yet? Covid. I don't understand why Covid would stop them from announcing a second season, they should have the ratings already? They don't need to announce season 2 storylines, cast list or even a premiere date yet at this stage. Nobody else does that when they announce a show's renewal.

I think it becomes more difficult to sign a contract since they don't know when the production is going to start.

Okay, that makes sense if they're worried they can't lock down the cast. But honestly if they have to be open to a recast if that's the case. I don't think any actor, apart from probably Michael Cimino, since he plays the title character, is really irreplaceable. And other shows which are in the same boat have announced renewals.

I don't think they'll have problems with that, most actors are not working right now (at least in the USA). Maybe they'll end moving to Canada if things doesn't get better The show was a hit, there'll be a second season and the creators even talked about it. I suppose this situation gives them time to prepare. I don't think they expected the success, and that gives them room to develop new storylines.

I'm curious about the role Simon will play in the second season. More than the characters appearance (it'll be easy to introduce Simon and Bram on an episode because they were from the same place, so a visit home and you have the perfect excuse to show them) if they are going to keep using Simon as Víctor's online confident. It worked perfectly fine this season but i'm not that sure if they'll continue that route

It worked perfectly fine this season but i'm not that sure if they'll continue that route I also wonder how much of a presence Simon will have on season 2. I think it was very well done how they incorporated him on season 1 and how it linked the movie to the show, but I don't think he needs to be that heavily featured on future seasons. Now Victor will have friends to whom he can confide in (Simon was great when he didn't have that). Still, some few appearances would be cute
