I've done some digging, and... It seems that the speculation about Syed attempting to commit suicide is right. Sky TV has picture spoilers for May 10th-14th: tv.sky.com/eastenders-syed-suicideIn case the spoilers vanish (as they have done in the past), here are the accompanying captions: "Coming up in EastEnders, Masood doesn't think he can forgive Zainab for what she did to Syed. He considers ending the marriage and asking Jane to run away with him. Oblivious, Zainab orders Tamwar to do a very bad thing: remove Syed and Amira from the family portrait. Masood's disgusted, but Zainab never wants to think about or see Syed again. It seems to Syed that everyone in Walford is turning against him. When Roxy comes over to talk about Christian his hopes are raised, but she tells him to leave Christian alone and get out of Walford. When she goes, he knocks back pills and washes them down with vodka. Fortunately, Masood finds him and whisks him to A&E, where Zainab tells him she wishes he'd died. [ ] It's the final straw for Masood. He over-rules his wife and says that Syed is coming home. If Zainab doesn't like it she can lump it. So Zainab throws Syed's belongings out in the street, provoking another row with Christian."

More from Digital Spy:
Marc Elliott (Syed Masood, 'EastEnders') By Kris Green
It's been far from plain sailing for EastEnders' Syed Masood over the last few weeks--his gay love affair with best friend Christian was exposed, his wife fled with his unborn baby and he's been ostracised by his own family. Returning to Albert Square in a bid to make amends, Syed's determined to put things right with his mother, father and brother. Wanting to shut out his problems, a teetotal Syed buys a bottle of vodka and begins necking it in his flat. However, after an argument with Roxy--who suggests that he leave Walford for good as there's nothing left for him--Syed continues to drink, before spotting a bottle of pills on the table. It's only when Masood finds him unconscious on the floor of his flat that he realises his son's desperate state. Here, DS chats to Marc about the latest twist in Syed's story--and how Zainab tells Syed that she wishes he was dead...
What's Syed's state of mind at the beginning of next week?
"Syed's family have turned their back on him and he's been ostracised by the community, so he's all alone. He seeks solace in the one place he thinks he’ll be okay--his local mosque. They, in not so many words, tell him where to go, too. He's really in a dark place. He has no wife, no baby, no Christian, no family and the final straw is the reaction he receives at mosque. He's lost."
How does his suicide attempt come about?
"It's really interesting what the writers have done with it. It's not a cry for help and it's not a reckless decision, either. Although it is an attempt on his own life, it's not premeditated in any way. He buys a bottle of vodka to shut his head off from all the problems. He's never drunk alcohol before as it's not part of his culture, so downing a bottle of vodka isn't a good idea…"
Aren't there pills involved? Isn't that part premeditated?
"There are pills, but it's not premeditated in the sense that he goes to get the pills from a cabinet--the pills are just lying on the table while he's getting drunk. He's already off his head on the vodka and starts looking at the pills quite quizzically. You don't see him again until Masood finds him spark out on the floor. So he does take the pills but they're an afterthought on Syed's part, more than anything."
The end of the week's quite shocking...
"Basically, Zainab's talking to Syed while he's semi-conscious on his hospital bed and essentially tells him that she wishes that Masood hadn't found him and wishes that he'd died. It's a spur of the moment thing on her part. It's not vicious--it all comes from a place of love. In her heart of hearts, I don't think she means it. It's all in the heat of the moment. Nina absolutely hated doing it because it's so dark and harsh. We found it quite upsetting to film actually--we were both crying!"
Do you think you could ever see Syed's family accepting Christian as his partner?
"I think that'd be nice, but it's cloud cuckoo land to think that. I really don't think it'll happen. Because of the traditional nature of the family, I can't see them coming to terms with Syed and Christian as a couple. And actually, I don't even think Syed can come to terms with them as a couple. Time will tell, though. It's such a hard thing to reconcile faith with sexuality and make it work.
Do you think Syed and Christian could ever be together?
"Syed and Christian are very different people. Christian's very out and proud whereas Syed isn't that kind of gay man--he's very insecure and doesn't like shouting it from the rooftops. As a couple, if they did get together, that would come between them. Christian would want to be holding hands on the street but Syed wouldn't be comfortable with that. It's not just a religion thing for Syed, it's more about the kind of man he is.
"As for whether they could ever be together... I hope they can be. But if they did, it'd be a rocky road. It won't be all happiness. And if there is happiness, it'll definitely be temporary."
What did you think of the twist which saw Masood turn his back on Christian after the attack?
"It's quite shocking not to help someone in need, especially as the Masoods and Beales have such close ties. It's certainly unforgivable that Masood walked past and there was an element of Masood wanting to wash his hands of everything. It was a great twist, though. I don't think Syed finds out, either. Certainly not in the near future, anyway. Nitin's been excellent through this entire storyline."
What was your reaction when you discovered that Amira left with Syed's baby?
"It was such a shocker! They way they executed it with the whole Amira and Chelsea pregnancy confusion was excellent. And of course, it leaves the door wide open for Preeya if she were to return…"
Do you think Syed will find out that she's pregnant?
"I'd love Qadim to come back. At some point, Qadim will find out that Amira's having Syed's baby because she isn't going to be able to hide it for very long. I'm not sure how Qadim could come back, but it'd be a really interesting dynamic. Ramon [Tikaram] is so commanding in that role. Qadim didn't get Syed the first time, so maybe when he finds out, he could maybe kidnap Syed!"
Is there going to be any happiness for Syed?
"Fingers crossed. Once he's got through the suicide bid and the bit of turmoil in the aftermath, he picks himself back up again. He actually tries to seek help from an unlikely source... I do hope there's more happiness to come, though. Regardless of whether he ends up with Christian, he'll lose his family as the Masoods aren't going to stand by his sexuality."
Do you have the same obsession with checked shirts as Syed?
"Oh my God, I'm wearing one right now! But it's mine. The wardrobes are blurring, though. I'm not really into the wide assortment of coloured t-shirts that I get to wear. There's one that I always dread wearing when I see it on the rail in my dressing room--it's the salmon-pink one. We've have argued, though, over whether it's coral. Maybe we could have a viewer vote on it..."

Omg that preview is heartbreaking.
And I'm not being funny, as much as I love Syed.. it's all good for him to say that he's never gonna see Christian again, but as soon as he says it he looks so hurt and upset haha.
Arghh, why can't they just be together and satisfy us?! :[

Jean approaches Roxy to confirm a booking for Ina’s birthday but Christian forgot to make a note of the booking and tells Roxy he will sort it out. In the cafe, Christian tries unsuccessfully to persuade Ian to cater for Ina’s party. Ian suggests Zainab, who has just walked into the cafe. Christian hands her the details of the event and leaves. At Christian’s flat, he is giving Roxy a foot massage as the doorbell rings. It’s Syed, who has come to see him about the menu. Syed reveals he has been seeing a therapist and that he’s cured of his 'gay feelings' and is able to touch Christian without having feelings for him. Christian is left fuming.
Later, Christian rants to Roxy about how Syed is gay, and that you can’t just change your feelings. Roxy attempts to cheer Christian up. She tells him to forget about Syed. Christian is grateful, but not convinced.
Syed is in his therapist’s office discussing how his techniques have not worked and how he still has feelings for Christian. The therapist tells him it may take years for things to change. Syed is distraught. Later Syed has calmed down and struggles to describe his feelings for Christian to Tamwar. They discuss what it means to be a respectable Muslim family and Syed breaks down admitting that he can’t stop loving Christian. Masood sees his son crying."

Zainab arrives asking what time they want the food, she ignores Christian; he makes a remark she is the one who needs therapy. At the chippy Lucy is bored. Christian asks if she wants to get back at her dad. Later on Christian is giving out free fish and chips at Ina’s party. Zainab arrives and is angry to find Christian passing around the free food. She wants to know what he is doing as he hired her to cater the food. Christian says that because Zainab ignored him he has taken his business elsewhere and calls Zainab’s family a joke. Masood tells Christian to stop insulting his wife. Christian tells Masood he is destroying his son and that he loves him more than Masood can imagine. Masood punches Christian and the Masood family leave. Roxy is angry with Christian and sacks him.

They close the door in his face. Christian understands and takes Syed home with him."

Refusing to go to mosque, Zainab rifles through the washing and comes across some of Syed's clothes. Returning home, Tamwar confides in his mother that Masood told everyone at mosque that he only has two sons. Suggesting that Zainab should visit Syed, Zainab instead hands over his clothes to take to the charity shop. After Masood apologises to Zainab for taking his frustrations out on her, they both agree that at least they have their sons. While out for a stroll, they spot Christian and Syed together and seemingly blank them. Zainab and Syed, however, lock eyes. Elsewhere, Christian's surprised that Syed's being so open about their relationship. Christian returns home to find Syed cooking and the flat in a complete mess. Tamwar sees Christian arrive at mosque; Masood's incredulous when he spots Christian at mosque; and Christian apologises to Syed for going to his mosque and despite reprimanding him, Syed admits that he loves him for it."
July 22: "Tamwar asks Syed if he can talk about his relationship with Christian. Syed invites Tamwar for dinner at Christian's flat and he reluctantly accepts. Tamwar eats Zainab's meal, before secretly heading around to Christian's flat. Tamwar and Syed have a heart-to-heart, and Tamwar asks Syed to go to mosque with him, before sharing a hug."

A bit more detail about upcoming episodes:
July 20: "At the Masoods, Zainab has cooked Tamwar a big breakfast, ready for his first day helping out with the family business. Later, Syed and Christian visit Dagenham Dave’s shop. Syed is uncomfortable when Dagenham Dave’s brother shows them different mattresses. Syed leaves in a strop. In the Minute Mart, Christian sees Tamwar looking at a men’s health magazine. He offers to help him bulk up, but Tamwar refuses, asking Christian to tell Syed that he is still his brother. Later, Tamwar asks Syed to come home. When Syed returns to the flat, he sees a burly man leaving and wonders what Christian has been up to. It was Dagenham Dave’s mate delivering the new mattress. Christian tells Syed that he loves him and that he would never stray.
At the Masood’s, Libby is using their internet, hers is not working. She needs to send an email to the funeral director. Libby breaks down into tears. She thanks Tamwar and begins to leave, as Zainab arrives. Zainab briefly acknowledges Libby, but then passes a box of Syed’s possessions to Tamwar, telling him to burn them. Tamwar calls her disgusting and leaves.
Elsewhere Tamwar refuses to apologise to Zainab insisting that he has done nothing wrong. Christian wants to know more about Syed’s religion but Syed tells him to get a book from the library rather than ask him questions. Later, at the mosque, Tamwar sees Christian arrive. He tries to usher Christian away but Masood sees them. Masood demands to know if this is a sick joke. Aware that they are making a scene, Zainab tries to get Masood to back off. Christian leaves and tells Syed what happened before apologising. Syed tells him he should not have gone there but he loves him for it."
July 22: "Tamwar is confused about his feelings towards Syed and Christian following recent events. Tamwar awkwardly talks to Syed about his relationship with Christian. Syed tells him it’s ok to feel weird about it and invites Tamwar to dinner. Tamwar accepts the invitation but can’t bring himself to tell Zainab about it. At Christian’s, Syed asks Christian to behave in a more restrained manner around Tamwar. When Tamwar arrives, Christian tries to make small talk but finds it difficult and decides to leave. Tamwar and Syed have a heart-to-heart about Syed’s choices and their religion. Spurred on by his beliefs and his brothers support, Syed opens up to Christian about how important he is to him. Later Tamwar suggests that he and Syed should go to mosque together without telling their parents and the two brothers embrace."

Good news and bad news! The good news first: the detailed spoilers for next week are out, and it look like we'll be getting a few glimpses of Syed, after all: August 3: "Mo blames Syed for The Vic potentially being turned into a gay bar." August 5: "Zainab continues to snub Syed." The bad news: Christian and Syed aren't mentioned in the new spoilers for August 16th-20th. So (glimpses of Syed aside) we're looking at a four-week black hole, at least.
