New interview with Tony Clay. Thought I'd better put it here since it could be deemed spoilery. EastEnders star Tony Clay reveals new pain ahead for Callum and BenIt’s been a year since Ballum’s wedding. How would you summarise the marriage so far? It’s been a journey before and after the marriage! They’ve had ups and downs, they’ve had a few high points and a few low points and obviously what’s set to come will be a massive test in their relationship. It’s been a real joy to play for me and Max and Aidan – he’s fantastic. I’m looking forward to seeing how the storyline pans out and for the viewers to see it as well. When you were first told about the storyline [Ben’s sexual assault], were there any nerves among you at all? Were you quite determined to absolutely give it your all?I think there’s always an element of nerves because you want to handle it with respect, you’re given a certain element of trust as well. That falls into the hands of Max and Aidan predominately but there’s also the directors, writers, etc. It’s a very delicate subject, one that needs to be told and needs to continue to be told. From the way it’s been handled and written, and the way the boys portray it from what I’ve seen is really beautiful. The scenes me and Max have had so far have been really lovely, it has been done really well I think and even if it just encourages one person to come forward, we’ve done our job. There’s a point where Callum and Ben think about moving in together. They want to commit but Ben’s actions recently is weighing heavily among the both of them – is that testing them in terms of committing to this massive step?I think, again, it questions what Callum can and cannot put up with. He loves Ben so much but there comes a point where you go “maybe I don’t know you at all”. IT’s the fact you see him getting so close to the flat and Lexi is there, she’s a part of their life, everything is there for Callum and everything is ready for him – but the sucker punch is Ben going out attacking people. He thinks “what?! How can you go out and do that and return home playing happy families?”, it doesn’t make any sense to Callum, that’s not the person he fell in love with, and he starts to just question everything, he questions maybe there is more of Ben’s dad in him than he initially thought. How does Callum feel when he realises Ben is distracted from celebrating their anniversary?I think he is just questioning everything. Callum thinks, “it’s our one year anniversary, and I’m pleading with you to make an effort”. To then find out about these attacks, it’s gut wrenching for him. Just to think “if you are capable of doing this one year into our marriage, what does that say about the rest of it going forward?”. I think Callum always thinks “well there has to be a reason why Ben is doing this, he can’t just being doing it because he’s evil”. But also, you start to see different sides to both characters. Now, Ben is the one who has to make amends and apologise, Callum is there wanting Ben to do a lot more. Is this discovery a huge tipping point for them?I think Callum has a big heart, he can forgive a lot of things, but from a moral perspective, there are a few things where he goes – that is not OK. I think it might just take him a little bit longer to deal with that. They’re really strong, they can come through a lot, hopefully they will come through this and move forward. What’s it like working with Gillian Taylforth?I love her, she’s one of the nicest people in this game. She’s an icon of telly and to work with her everyday and call her a friend is the best. She’s a joy and a pleasure, I feel so grateful for the scenes we have and she’s got some beautiful stuff coming up as well. Callum walks in and sees the kiss between Ben and Lewis – how much damage will this have on their relationship? It’s just another thing for Callum, it makes him wonder if Ben is trying to destroy the relationship. I think he wonders if Ben wants to be single, live freely and he thinks if you want that, you go ahead and have that – but I won’t be a part of it. In time, it’s potentially something Callum can move past but in that moment, he’s totally heartbroken, he doesn’t understand where Ben’s actions are coming from. It’s sad, we’ve got some sad scenes coming up. How does it make you feel to see so many people still support Ben and Callum? As I said before, me and Max love working together, we’ve got a great relationship on and off screen – we’re really close pals now and it’s just a joy. Hopefully people are still really invested in it and people want to see Ben and Callum on screen whether they are happy or sad! It’s about showing that not every relationship is sunshine and roses, there is ups and downs and turmoil, particularly in a soap! There’s a new set in place, a new producer, how are things now? It’s great! Morale is really high, we’ve got some great stories coming up, really lovely stories and it feels like a great time to be there. Some great people have joined the cast recently, it’s a really nice time to be there and I feel really lucky. Ricky Champ is taking on a post-natal depression storyline, will we see Callum get involved at some point?Yeah. Ricky is phenomenal. Ricky, Tanya and Gwen, they’re amazing. Ricky is such a beautiful actor, he has an ability to make people laugh but when you see scenes where Stuart is down, he just tackles it so well. Callum is in and around that, he cares so deeply for his brother and there are some beautiful, heart-breaking scenes on the way for them both.

Colin (my avatar) Russell and Barry Clark will be returning to Walford for Dot's funeral. Michael Cashman returned for a few episodes in 2016 when Colin told Dot he was getting married and convinced her to go to his wedding. Gary Hailes, on the other hand, has not been in Walford since February 1989. Barry and Colin had an extremely tortured relationship - Colin was 15 years his senior, and was Barry's first real male lover. Barry was immature, involved in crime, and not out to his family. When his father learned he was gay and with Colin, he disowned Barry. Barry spiraled out of control and went back into the closet, ending his relationship with Colin, yet still living with him and asking him for money. He finally left to be a DJ on a cruise ship, returning for a visit right around the time Colin left Walford (early 1989). A very poignant last scene. I wonder if they're going to get back together or just have an awkward reunion. I never thought Barry would come back so I'm really curious here. www.digitalspy.com/soaps/eastenders/a41589510/eastenders-spoilers-lauren-branning-lofty-mary-returning/

I like the look of this new Johnny. He looks all grown up, a proper adult. I just hope he won't be treated as horribly as Ben/Callum. They aren't even allowed a bed scene, yet the lesbians are. I hope Johnny gets a boyfriend and that they will be treated the same as the lesbians (though I'm not holding my breath as I'm used to the hypocrisy and the disgusting double standard).

The show is terrible at writing any gay men and has been for decades. They are also terrible at any relationships these days.

I can't help feeling the recast is all wrong for the role. I've never warmed to the current Ben nor the last Peter for the same reason - they just don't inhabit the character we knew. In Charlie's case, he'll have to be one hell of an actor to convince me that he's the same guy Linda used to call "sausage".
As for the writing for nuJohnny - I won't hold my breath. As others have said, they've not exactly done a great job with Ben, Callum or Felix (who?). So why would it be any different with a character who's been offscreen for years now and whose most memorable moment occurred two actors ago?
