I haven't been watching since EE returned after the new pandemic filming. Seeing Ben and Callum keeping their distance is odd. It's the same for all soaps.

The channel Eastenders posted this clip from earlier in the show's history:

June Brown, known for playing Dot Cotton Branning, has died at the age of 95. She departed the show two years ago, after appearing for most of its run since its debut year 1985. Dot was a fixture on Albert Square for many years, a friend of Ben's late grandmother Peggy and mother Kathy, and later of Callum's brother Stuart too, so I guess that when her death is portrayed onscreen, it will resonate with everyone even though Ballum weren't related to her.

Why are they showing the lesbians in bed together but never did that with Ben and Callum. WTF?!

Why are they showing the lesbians in bed together but never did that with Ben and Callum. WTF?! Depressing double standards. A woman committing adultery with another woman - hot. Two young husbands - too raunchy to show onscreen.

Curiously that doesn't have to do anything with lesbians per se, but with heterosexual gaze over relationships. Lesbian sex is relatable not because lesbian viewers wanted to watch it but because it's a sexual fantasy for a lot of heterosexual males.
But of course there's a double standard. I remember a female journalist talking about how disgusted some people were over the sex scenes on It's a sin. She had to rectify because she fabricated the story but over that she was am hypocrite because she wrote an article gushing about how hot were the sex scenes on Bridgerton.
It's been more than 20 year of the bad review that John Updike wrote about Alan Hollinghurst's The spell, but it seems some people are in in the same point Updike was back then (and i don't like The spell, it's Hollinghurst worst novel by far, but if Updike was grossed by gay sex scenes he should refuse to write the review and given the fact that he used graphic sex in his novels he was an hypocrite too)

My best to Max Bowden and his struggles, but Ben is such a ruined character. The break is not a bad thing for me.
Happy New Year, everyone.

I don't care either for Ben, as played by Max. I don't know if they will recast or just rest the character. Frankly he is need of a rest, but hopefully not a permanent one. The show has foolishly killed off so many legacy characters over the years and I would hate to see Ben go the same way. My guess is they were planning this for a while and that's why they recast Johnny to fill the gay male quota. But I really hope they will not be throwing Johnny at Callum, but instead develop something with the chronically underused Felix/Tara Misu.

I don't know if it's really a good idea to get rid of a character who is part of a very popular couple (and frankly i don't found the article interesting, the whole accurate despiction of a 2024 gay man thing rub me in the wrong way)

I really dislike this because all they would have to do is rewrite Ben as someone who is actually growing and maturing as a human being. All of the characters in the square have done horrible things and behaved horribly yet they have been around way longer than Ben. The idea that a fictional character can't be rewritten to be better or more nuanced or just more pleasant, to me, is absurd. The connection between Ben's multiple traumas, he severe abuse and abandonment as a child could all have been dealt with so much better. These characters are only as good or bad or boring or interesting as they are written. Soaps kill characters all the time but legacy characters matter and I still think Ben should be allowed to actually grow well into adulthood just like some of the other characters that are now in their 40s and started on the show as kids.

The best gay content involving EE for several years now.
