I dont know guys............Thore and Jo has spoiled me as chrolli, Couldn't they take a leave of absense and come to America and do their story for us but with more graphic love scenes??? I'd rather see them stay in Verbotene Liebe in Germany and give us these so magical moments. And I don't think they'd agree doing sex scenes like in QAF and I don't think I'd be ready to see them like this, I have Dante's Cove for this ;D Sylvain

I think Chrolli was mostly rooted in emotion/desire and the right amount of sex. Not as little as Nuke, but not as graphic as QaF. DeRo was almost too much. I love it and it's right for that show, but Chrolli always had this "cute and adorable" label, conveying so much with shy looks, some heartfelt dialogue or generally looking very sexy in an understated way.
If this would really come to HBO, it could still be all that (I'm thinking of the quiet tones of "John from Cincinnati"), but I think the graphic nature of cable could take away at least a bit from the "niceness." HBO is sometimes so over the top with cursing, it's almost a satire.
It's strange that they didn't buy the rights to DeRo, in that case. Maybe they will really stick close to the script, root this in the boxing world, Olli being a waiter and all that, make this about coming out to your brother.
The States love sports, so maybe they loved the "gay boxer" idea, first and foremost, and want to redo the box fight as the main thing. That kiss almost reminds me of "Never Been Kissed" now, which is still a popular movie.
But why bother shooting just another rom-com? Or just another gay movie? I almost think it has either to be epic (like "Band of Brothers") or have a special twist. Otherwise it could be another mini-series like "The Mists of Avalon" on TNT. Good acting, good atmosphere, good for DVD sales later, but not really a phenomenon like the original.

Can we make Bruce Greenwood Wolfgang please? It could go a couple of ways, but if they imbue it with the sophistication that they gave john from cincinnati, then the show is doomed, audiences never appreciate the really brilliant HBO shows, like "the comeback" w. lisa kudrow. fools. but i think it's important to remember that IF this does come through, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be on HBO, HBO just gets the first chance to look at it and say yes or no. The producer who has the rights USED to work at HBO, so hopefully he'll translate HBO's high-gloss sensibilities if production does get underway. I'd hate for them to go the mini-series route, because i feel like the characters give you so much to work with, it's sad to limit them to a little four - eight hour format. it IS strange that they didn't buy the rights to DeRo... what exactly IS it about VL that makes this guy think it will translate well to the United States? It couldn't just be the JHore chemistry, b/c igor and dennis have lovely wonderful chemistry too. So Lugia, you must be right, it must be something about the "gay boxer" angle. The first season would most likely end with Christian's fervent "It must be because I'm so unbelievably in love with you."
PS Mitsaso Lady GAga as pepper FTW! i can just see Christian in a drug induced haze having a heart to heart with Gaga-pepper about how much he loves Olli, cut to the next morning and CoCo finds her BF face down in a water dish, errant bits of kibble sticking to hair ;D

Can we make Bruce Greenwood Wolfgang please? Why isn't Wolfgang on our show yet? He was like Christian's older older brother, too! Yes, completely true. I think it would be a good fit on TNT. It may have a vision of how we females watch gay storylines, since soaps are usually geared at females. And it would still be more graphic than network stuff.

Good acting, good atmosphere, good for DVD sales later, but not really a phenomenon like the original. Lugia...Just my opinion of why I think they didn't choose to buy the rights to DeRo... I find that DeRo have a certain coarseness/roughness to their characters, where as Olli and Christian are just more likable. I mean, you just fall in love with them and root for them to stay together forever. I think the gay boxer angle is a lot more original than that of a gay skater. Ollian's storyline is one of a few where neither of the characters have taken or become addicted to drugs. Yes, drugs has entered the picture in the past including todays current storyline, but the writers seem to have taken the road less traveled and not opted for the bed hopping gay junkie...rare for TV gay characters. A check mark for Dero. Neither one has strayed or had sex with another person...so far. Rare for TV gay couples. A check mark for DeRo. Chemistry between the actors is pretty much amazing. This has translated wonderfully to screen giving the characters a realness to their on screen passion and love. I know DeRo also has great chemistry, I just think Jo and Thore has risen to new heights regarding on screen chemistry. Two of the most beautiful gay on screen couples ever on TV. Jo and Thore are really great looking men who are simply gorgeous as an on screen couple. DeRo to me just ain't that hot. I find neither one of them very attractive. Dero may have more explicit sex and tongue when kissing, but Ollian have more passion on display. The way they look at each other, the way they touch, the gentle and loving way they kiss each other with no tongue required. The incredible body language. I find this far more sexy, alluring and heart stopping. This I think is what hooked a lot of us fans and one of the reasons HBO had interest. Yes there are countless love stories between two men on TV, but never can I recall a love story presented so beautifully. And two years with still no break up. Unprecedented for a SOAP or any TV characters centered on a gay couple. A main pull for the HBO contingent. Ollian are far more popular and well know internationally than DeRo. All this I believe is some of the reasons that Ollian were choosen over DeRo for a remake on HBO. And remember, DeRo have been around long before Ollian, but just haven't translated or touched the hearts of people around the globe the way Ollian have. Just my humble opinion.

People are still comparing Christian/Olli and DeRo? STILL? Seriously, when will it end? Can't folks just talk about the pairing they like without trashing other pairings to do it? Talking about one's appreciation of a pairing without clowning on another pairing for being inferior to the preferred pairing is not impossible to do. No really, try it. I might be harshing on folks squees about this US version of Chrolli but I am tired of the comparisons between the pairings of Chrolli & DeRo and even more tired of having to ask folks to stop doing it before more flame wars break out with folks defending "their couple". So maybe it's to the point that mods should just edit folks responses that can't seem to keep their comments to their own pairing and not rip at other pairings to prop their favorite couple's worth in order to put a stop to it. Seriously. Like who you want to like but enough with the comparisons of why one couple is better/superior/more interesting than the other. There is no need for it.

This is why I stressed...in my humble opinion. I was simply pointing out what I consider to be some reasons why I feel the story of Olli and Christian was picked up by HBO and not DeRo. I certainly didn't consider a flame war would start because I pointed out a few reasons. I guess my comment about not finding DeRo attractive or their storyline to my taste would get people on the defensive. So I send my apologies. It was just an opinion I have and I speak for no one else on this site. I will honor your request and stop bringing up DeRo and stick only to talking about Ollian on this tread.

Seriously. Like who you want to like but enough with the comparisons of why one couple is better/superior/more interesting than the other. There is no need for it. Mod dearest, with all the respect: I happen to believe that brownsugar explained her points very respectfully towards DeRo. She didn't "trash" DeRo at any point of her dissertation, she didn't call them names or said that their storyline was bad, she made a very good point calling out the gay boxer thing and the lack of "gay cliches" on the story of VL in comparison to AWZ. Take it from someone who likes DeRo as well but sees them as a horse of a different color, brownsugar described exactly those differences explaining why HBO would think the Chrolli story is better for them to pick up the rights, and NOT why SHE things the Chrolli story is better (which is a given, since, hey, this is the VL forum, so it must be a popular opinion here). So, in retrospect, I do believe your words here were harsh. I understand if these boards completely prohibit ANY compares between Chrolli and DeRo just as a safety precaution (even if someone simply states that Christian's new hair is better than Roman's, for example), but actually saying that brownsugar was trashing and clowning DeRo is quite a jump. With all the respect, Mitsaso

But it still isn't necassary to compare them over and over again, marking out, which one is better, more original, has the better chemstry... it's just getting on my nerves. I don't follow the DeRo-storyline, but still I think it's not fair to the fans of this couple.

I don't follow the DeRo-storyline, but still I think it's not fair to the fans of this couple. My point is, in a forum that is all about tv's gay couples, some comparing is inevitable, if we want the different fandoms to interact. For example, here but also in the blog, I keep hearing for the last year how VL has dripped in quality, Chrolli have gotten boring and DeRo 2.0 or Kish or whomever are much better currently. No mod jumped in to edit those things. You know why? Because I might not like it, but it's true. And even if it wasn't, it's still just someone's opinion, which, as long as it's not actively trashing the other show/couple, should be allowed to be heard. And the compare here wasn't needless. Someone actually asked "why didnt they pick DeRo instead?" Which is a legit question, because even I believe that DeRo, as an edgier and angstier concept would be more appropriate for a US show and especially for HBO. Plus, this is a remake, if they didn't want the skater angle or the cheating, they could just edit them out. (although the sexy cheating is a given for an edgy HBO show).

Than point it out as an opinion and not like a fact. The comparing of DeRo and Ollian is often so damn about, who is better. And everyone wants to be right. Sorry, but I hate this stuff.

I watch almost all these shows and I've never felt the need to compare them. Not even once.
So I think it is entirely possible to talk about a particular show, in the appropriate thread, and never even mention the other shows.
I don't think comparisons are inevitable unless folks don't see each show as an individual entity that exists within its own universe.
When I watch VL, I'm not thinking "Oh, these are the gay characters that live in Dusseldorf". I'm thinking "Oh, here's Christian and Oliver".
For me, that's the difference. On a personal level, it definitely takes me aback when folks tend to lump all gay characters together and compare and contrast them like Beanie Babies or Pokemon cards.
For me it's like this, these shows are not in competition with each other so why force them to compete? The amount of contortions folks have to go through to compare them is kind of crazy.
Other than being male, German and gay, the couples followed on VL and DeRo have almost nothing in common.
It's not the olympics of gay soap characters where they are all in one place participating in competitive gayness.
I don't see all gay characters as one big pot of gay. I never even think about DeRo when I'm watching Chrolli because the two shows have nothing to do with each other just like I'm not comparing "The Mentalist" to "Criminal Minds" when I'm watching eat just because both might involve a murder.
Also, people tend to say all kinds of unsubstantiated and inflammatory things on the Internet that they would never say to someone in a face-to-face conversation because the consequences are less immediate.
But from a "structure of the threads" perspective, it just doesn't make sense to talk about one show in the thread of a different show because the folks on the thread don't have the same frame of reference or basis for comparison.
If the only show I watch is VL and folks keep bring Brothers and Sisters and The Wire into it, I'm eventually going to feel left out and annoyed and I shouldn't have to because I'm not on the "Brothers and Sisters" or "The Wire" thread.
People come into a particular thread with the expectation that the thread will be about a specific thing, in this case, Verbotene Liebe. I think it IS the Mods job to make sure it stays that way.
Some boards just immediately delete comments that go off topic and it's unfortunate because I'm sure the folks who wrote those comments really had something to say but if it's not about VL, why bring it up in the VL Thread?
As for Flame Wars, they do happen and they happen quickly and without warning and I've definitely seen them create bad feeling and trolling and all kinds of bad behavior.
I would think that part of watching so many different kinds of gay characters on TV would be to have the effect of getting folks to see gay people as individuals, not just all variations on a theme and that maybe that would seep into real life a bit.

Thank you to Shirley for the heads-up on this ... soapoperadigest.com/news/breaking/Chrolli Goes To Hollywood? Christian and Oliver, the wildly popular duo from German soap VERBOTENE LIEBE, may soon be States-side — in an American remake. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sam Martin, former VP at HBO, has optioned the storyline for a version set in Portland, Ore. "That is a very big compliment to everyone working on the Chrolli storyline,” praises Jo Weil (Oliver). Pick up the March 16 issue of Weekly, on stands March 5, for more of the actor's thoughts on a possible Chrolli remake.

-About Pattinson you're right, Christian's role is more "bright" indeed, compared to what he looks like lately (it's my fault here: my personal story would have been darker): however I've appreciated him as painter Salvador Dalì (moustache aside! ;-D), or in "The Nibelungs' Ring".

Seriously. Like who you want to like but enough with the comparisons of why one couple is better/superior/more interesting than the other. There is no need for it. WORD. And while we're flinging about inappropriate comparisons, I also find it interesting that in a year and a half of posting in this board's DeRo threads, I have never seen any DeRo fans bashing Chrolli, but over here the reverse just seems to happen over and over again. Tell you the truth, I'm kinda sick of it (and mitsaso, you may not feel that brownsugar's post was DeRo-bashing - fans of the pairing would feel differently, let me assure you. Just like oodles of Chrolli fans would not simply shrug it off if they got a long string of reasons why DeRo is oh so much better pointed out to them.) Personal opinions are fine and dandy, but I think on a board shared by fans of many different shows and pairings, it should be possible to discuss your favourites without "I think my pairing is better than your pairing" type posts; it's called mutual respect. Moving on.

Is there any new news on this? I hope they really go through with it:) It's going to take time. Buying the character and story rights is one thing. Developing a script based on what was purchased with the rights (which other characters can appear, etc.) is another thing. Then there's the writing, and the filming, and the shopping it around to interested and not-so-interested broadcasters to see which will give them the most money for it, etc. Then it's up to the broadcaster to show it. <--- I know this step sounds pretty simplistic, but if the network/broadcaster changes their mind...it can get set back a couple steps. Here's a different question: What are they going to call it?

God i bet they get lazy and just call it the name of the town or something if they want to be artsy they can call it Portland Midnight or some other such fuffle If they keep the bar- owner format, then perhaps they'll call it after the bar? Nothing as grand as "No LImits" but O'Grady's? perhaps some silly play on words, like they keep Christian's last name as Mann, and make Olli's last name Maus.. of "Maus and Mann?" get it? ok i'll shut up now...

A lil behind the times with seeing it, but I noticed they're playing 'fantasy casting'[/url] for this over on AfterElton! And in one of the comments, someone says they had to do over 70 takes for that Chrolli 'Breathe Me' scene. Is that true? Btw, love how snicks calls Chrolli "one of the iconic gay couples of international TV".

I heard that on the VL set, the actors usually only have 1 or 2 takes with each scene, and then it's on to the next one. There's no way they had enough time and money to start that scene over and over. BUT...if it were true, I'd love to get my hands on the "bad" takes.
