Kate Oates has a good track record of LGBT representation on her soaps and was responsible for the success of Emmerdale's Robron and Corrie's Kana. But I don't think we will see a gay male couple on EE anytime soon since the previous writers gutted the canvas of all gay/bi men and only left the lesbian/bi women. Kate has added more women to the cast and no men, so I suspect she is heading in the direction of lesbian romances.

Her work on both Corrie and Emmerdale veered toward lazy, stereotypical, and at times outright homophobic and biphobic material. She's good at hype and the rest is a huge mixed bag.

I could not disagree more. Yes, her work wasn't uniformly great - whose is? - but I can't figure out what you found homo- or bi-phobic about her writing. To my eyes she was the first producer in a very long time to actually invest time and energy to develop same-sex pairings on either soap. Before her tenure, neither ED nor Corrie held my interest; I found them dreadfully dull in general and the gay couples (on the rare occasions they featured) were just plain dreadful. I can only hope she can work her magic on EE which has been shambling along for the last 2+ years since DTC left.

I can only hope she can work her magic on EE which has been shambling along for the last 2+ years since DTC left. Robert Sugden was the epitome of the depraved bisexual trope under Oates - lying, killing, cheating, and one-dimensional beyond belief. She retconned Aaron as being sexually abused by his father, even though this went against his history. She also used this as an opportunity to whitewash her choices to have Robert verbally and emotionally abuse Aaron for a year (including telling Aaron he should have done a better job trying to kill himself, and making fun of his scars) by painting Robert as his new hero after the abuse. Her attempt to tell a gay parenting story on Corrie was a disaster - she created the most ridiculous homophobic caricature as a grandmother opposing the adoption, then went out of her way to make the two dads completely unsuited to be parents (both suddenly going on crime sprees as their new daughter almost immediately got put in hospital from a drug overdose). Finn on Emmerdale was the lonely gay who existed to be dumped and degraded. She killed off a lesbian on Emmerdale and didn't even have her partner be in any of the key scenes, just giving her a few moments weeks later at the funeral before packing her off. Kate and Rana on Corrie had little foundation beyond awkward making out that felt like D-grade late night entertainment. There was no foundation for Rana to suddenly be a lesbian, beyond Oates saying that since Rana was a "maneater," she must actually be into women.

Ben's return storyline will see him arrive back on the Square with Lola Pearce and their daughter Lexi. I hope it's not another story that Ben is not gay but Bi I have a fear that will be the case since they've not announced any male character apart from Sean Slater. It was bad enough they did it with Ben's adopted nephew Steven; to do it twice - especially since Ben already tried to go straight a couple of times and couldn't make it work - would be a travesty. And Lola is technically his cousin - albeit a distant one - but her last name should really be Mitchell because her paternal grandfather is Billy Mitchell. It was skeevy enough they slept together (and conceived a child) the first time, surely they won't do it again!

Well, the possibilities are: Keanu Keegan Halfway Kush (Hunter would be an option but he's on his way out) (Jay could technically be an option but I doubt they'll go there again) (Martin, Robbie, Adam are all unrelated to Ben but a bit long in the tooth to be "discovering" their bisexuality)

There is no way Ben would not be gay and there was nothing in the spoilers or articles to imply he wouldn't be gay. Lola has always been Ben's biggest supporter of him coming out. She is the one to tell him to his face that he was gay and she would support him. He has a child, that is just a reality and I'm glad the show is finally acknowledging Ben and Lola's daughter. Also really great recast. Close enough to Harry to not be distracting. I'm excited

I was a bit worried they would say Ben was in the closet again and bearding with Lola, but with the latest comments I think he's still going to be out.
Harry Reid is a class act. I thought he was good as Ben, overall, and the writing never gave him much of a chance. He didn't deserve to be let go. He's taking it well and trying to make sure his replacement gets a fair shake from fans. Good for him. I hope he has some good stuff coming up in his career.

He has experience real love from an out gay man. He developed friendships. His mother came back from the dead. He is out to all of Walford. He is not the same scared, scarred, abused, closeted teenager desperately needing someone to love him and deathly afraid of being rejected by the one parent he sill had living. You can't just pretend the last 4 years never happened to Ben. He's an adult now. It got better.

It doesn't seem like he won't be returning with a boyfriend, or that they even have one in mind for him yet. That makes sense given there's been no casting news for a male except Sean Slater (although technically he could've turned bi - the actor's homoerotic scenes with Ryan Kwanten on True Blood were hot).
It was frustrating when Ben returned the last time and tried to go back into the closet, but I don't think he was really out or in a relationship with another boy before he got sent away for murdering Heather. And I can sort of understand that juvenile detention is not the best place to be out and proud unless you want to be sexually abused by the other inmates.

If filming for the newest Ben has only started recently it's probably going to take a few months before we get to see him.

If filming for the newest Ben has only started recently it's probably going to take a few months before we get to see him. Not necessarily, I think they only film about 6 weeks ahead of broadcast and location shoots (outside the studio) are typically filmed later. Plus, I'm pretty sure Max Bowden posted pictures of him onset a while back so my guess is he will be onscreen in April. Some are speculating that the new character of Keanu's brother-in-law Gray (married to Karen and Mitch's eldest child with two daughters of his own) will be Ben's love interest. Others are saying his love interest will be the new gangster rival of Phil because Ben has a thing for older men and a daddy complex, LOL. I personally feel it won't be either of them but a new character who hasn't been cast yet - Ben's first few months back are more likely to be consumed with family drama than romance.

He's already in the trailer for Spring 2019, and the most recent episode revealed Ben is already back in the UK (but was not seen) when Jay called him and got a local dial tone.

I wish they hadn't decided to focus on the least compelling aspect of Ben's characterization - his desperation to be a hardman like his dad.
