Unpleasant news comes as Will is in the middle of coming out to his father. After hearing that Lucas has gotten back with Sami though, Will realizes his dad might not be mature enough to handle his news. They’re distracted by the news of the explosion. When EJ returns to Casa DiMera, he finds Will confronting Stefano about the killings. EJ’s baffled when Will reminds Stefano of all of the secret things he’s done for him. Back in Salem, Will catches EJ and Sami together. He thinks they are having it off and lectures her for cheating on Lucas so fast. Elvis tries to convince him he has no interest in his mother. After he leaves, Sami starts to argue with her son about his job with the mayor. When she suggests it could land him in prison, he explains that it’s the only thing keeping him out. She orders him to quit anyway but he refuses.

Still reeling from the connection between Will and EJ, Sami confronts Lucas and says that she knows he took the fall for Will in EJ's shooting. "Sami isn't happy that Lucas kept it from her," says Bryan R. Dattilo (Lucas), "but he's also grateful that he was looking out for their son." Their talk takes an abrupt turn when Lucas touches on the subject of EJ blackmailing their son. Sami is outraged that Lucas never told her the truth about it. At that moment, Will enters and is disgusted to hear Sami blasting Lucas for keeping secrets. 'Will doesn't know that the secret is about EJ's blackmail," explains Chandler Massey (Will). But he tells his mom that she has no right to be upset at anybody for keeping secrets.

The argument escalates and Will blurts out to his parents that he's gay. "Will didn't go there with the intention of telling them," says Massey. "Things get emotional during the argument and it just comes up." "Sami and Lucas are taken aback by it," previews Dattilo. "Here they were ready to protect Will from a whole set of problems with EJ, and now there is a whole set of new issues." "Sami is in shock and doesn't say anything," adds Alison Sweeney (Sami). "It's such an open and vulnerable moment when Will tells them. Her reaction is, 'I have to go,' and she flees the scene." Will is put off by his mother's reaction. "It's the worst thing that Sami could do," Massey says. "Will tells his mom, this person who he loves and cares about, something so personal about himself, and she doesn't even want to be around him after he says it. It hurts." Lucas understands what his ex-wife is thinking. "At that moment, Sami can't handle it," Dattilo says. "She leaves Lucas to discuss the aftermath with Will, which is probably the best thing, because Sami would have only added more fire to the drama by staying around." Will is happy to have his father's support. "If it weren't for Lucas having the understanding and reaction that he does, it would have been a nightmare," notes Massey. "But from the moment Will tells Lucas he's gay, there is nothing but positive energy and love coming from Lucas. Will recognizes that." Which isn't to say Lucas isn't thrown by the news. "Lucas is very quick to say, 'Look, I didn't see this coming. I'm surprised. I don't know what it really means for the future, but I know that I love you, and I'm sorry I haven't been here. There is nothing wrong with you for what you just told me. You're not at fault in any way by what you're feeling,'" previews Dattilo. "It's more that Lucas is worried about what it means for his son in other people's eyes. Will might have to deal with things he hasn't encountered yet as far as other people not being so understanding." Does Lucas have any misgivings that he didn't realize what Will was going through? "Lucas blames himself for being surprised," says Dattilo, "because it proves that he really doesn't know his son. Will doesn't blame Lucas. Instead he says, 'How could you know? You weren't even around.' For Lucas, that hurts more than not having any idea that his son was gay, the fact that Will doesn't think that his dad was there for him. But Will also says, 'Mom has been here the whole time and she had no clue because she's all absorbed in her own thing.'" Lucas realizes that Sami is a touchy subject for Will, especially in light of her hasty retreat, but in his own way, he also tries to gently shed light on Sami's behavior. "I think that they can both agree as father and son that it's just how Mom is," admits Dattilo. 'Mom worries about her own stuff a lot. She loves Will, but she's very preoccupied with her own drama. Lucas feels that Will has a valid point in the things he says, but at the same time, it's no excuse to blame Sami or isolate her. Lucas' big thing is trying to get his family together. So he has to play mediator between Sami and Will, and try to get Sami to sit down and have Will talk to her, instead of yelling and arguing about things. Will is more open to talking to his father. In that aspect, Lucas is there for his son."

After taking time to sort out her feelings, Sami returns to try and make things right with her son. Upon coming back, she overhears Will reveal to Lucas that he has already talked to Marlena about being gay. Sami is stunned that Will confided his secret to his grandmother, of all people, first and loses it. She tears into Will for seeking Marlena's help and not turning to his own mother. "Sami loves her son so much, but she always seems to say the wrong thing," says Sweeney. "She always puts her foot in her mouth, and if it's possible to mess up a situation, Sami knows how to make that happen. I think this is one of those times." Explains Dattilo, "Sami is hurt that Will went to a woman who she's had such a complicated history with. Sami feels like she's being overlooked as a mom; not being respected as a mom." However, Will has no patience for his mother's emotional outburst. "Will is expecting an apology and doesn't get it," Massey says. "Instead, Sami takes the route, in Will's mind, of grabbing at the pettiest thing she could say. Sami is upset because she feels she had a right to know before anybody else, when she really didn't. When Will was struggling with his sexuality, Marlena was there for him the whole time. Sonny obviously knew everything that Will was going through and was also there for him. Sami wasn't really in the picture. She had her own stuff." Unable to cope with his mom's reaction, Will storms out. "Will leaves angry because Sami still isn't willing to listen in the way that he wants her to, or needs her to," Dattilo says. "The way Will sees it, this just proves that Sami really is only thinking about herself. Lucas advises Sami that she has to change her approach. She can't keep going at Will the way she has been, or keep walking out on him. Lucas is quick to say, 'If you don't take care of this relationship, you're going to lose your son."

Shortly after Chandler Massey joined DAYS as Will in 2010, Bryan R. Dattilo left the show. As a result, viewers never got the chance to see the two actors play the close history that had previously been established between Lucas and Will. When Dattilo returned in late February, Massey chose to play a distance between father and son. "It was not appropriate to play the close bond they had because Lucas had been away in China for so long," explains Massey. "There needed to be an adjustment period." However, now that the duo has a heart-to-heart about Will's sexuality, Massey says that viewers will quickly see the familiar closeness restored between Lucas and Will. "When Will talks to Lucas about being gay, they're the first scenes where I felt the father-and-son relationship," says Massey. "They are some pretty touching scenes."

Sami flips out at Lucas when he confesses that he’s known for awhile that EJ has been blackmailing their son. Will laughs his ass off when he catches Sami lecturing Lucas about lying. This leads to the three of them getting into a brutal argument. Will becomes so overwrought that he finally tells them he’s gay. Sami immediately runs away and Lucas tells his son he feels disappointed. Will wonders if his father will be able to accept him. Lucas assures him he does. Meanwhile, Sami runs to EJ and tells him everything. He’s hardly surprised and manages to stop her pity party for herself so he can urge her to think of her son for once. After he explains that she should still love her son, she runs back, only to hear Will admitting that he’s already told Marlena. Sami has a fit. Lucas shakes his head and orders her to make things right with her son before it’s too late. He’s not thrilled that she’s spending so much time with EJ either.

As the men argue, Will reveals something to the lawyer that no one else knows. Pretty soon, Will’s friend Neil comes out of the woodwork to explain to the cops that he was with Will at a gay bar when Stefano was shot. Will confirms this and there are even more witnesses. Roman doesn’t quite put things together so Will has to explain that he’s actually gay.

- Agent Spencer arrives to take over the murder investigation. EJ is now prime suspect. Will catches his boss hiding the papers proving he’s not a DiMera. The cops rattle his belt and EJ does his best to stay composed. Once they leave, he’s frazzled and runs off, dropping the papers behind. Will picks them up.

- Across town, William has his hands on some pretty significant proof but never gets to see it. Elvis stops Will before he can see the evidence proving that he is not a DiMera. EJ goes off to meet Stefano’s lawyer. Surprisingly, the lawyer knows the truth already and EJ can’t lie his way out of it. However, after doling out some threats, Elvis manages to make sure the secret is kept silent.

- Sonny starts to worry about Will after he learns that his friend is working for EJ again and looking for more dirt to blackmail his boss with. Will isn’t in a great mood in general. He’s miffed that he’s been quite publicly forced out of the closet. His parents are shocked to read about this in the paper. They’re also shocked when Will shows up and tells them he’s working with Elvis again. Although Will really doesn’t mind being Elvis’ slave, Sami’s offended and lashes out at EJ. He reminds her his sister just died so she mopes away. When he runs into William, he lays into him for always running to his mommy about his problems. Will doesn’t know what Elvis ever saw in her. He asks but EJ isn’t sure how to answer that. Meanwhile, Lucas and Sonny have a long talk about Will. During this, Lucas realizes that Sonny is totally smitten and wants to be more than friends with Will. Although Sonny admits it, he doesn’t think the timing is right.
