Not overly impressed with today's show. I was too busy thinking about how lousy the writing and the pacing of the show was too present in my mind, to really give too much thought to the acting. Van did a good job in places but I wasn't impressed like I thought I would be. I'll watch it again though.
It was too rushed. Power of attorney and donation were just too unrealistic for me, yes, I know it's soap but please at least make it somewhat realistic that it could happen that way. Katie was just unrealistic throughout the entire show, I thought and she sucked the life out of the scenes with Luke, IMO and it was too important to have a commercial than for Luke to tell Katie on the air that it was Reid's heart. Nobody was there for Luke.
Anyway, I was expecting much more from the show than I got. Again, writing was horrid, IMO.

Some seriously bad writing. REALLY bad. As for the rushed thing... that's ATWT for you. They can hand over a child's custody to a non biological parent without seeing the inside of a courtroom. But really, there is NO WAY they could have those documents ready so quickly. Just no way.
I thought Van was really good, but very powerful in two scenes: the scene where he tells Reid all about the things they have to do so he can't die. ESS is good too, though all he does is look at Luke like he totally loves him and smiles. And the scene where he tells Katie about Reid having a home with her and the Reid's heart thing. I thought those were his best moments. But we can see Luke growing up and maturing in this arc, too bad it's happening in the space of five minutes.
Because the usual Luke things: whining, crying, making it all about him, feeling sorry for himself.... he didn't do those things, he did what Reid wanted and what Reid would have wanted him to do. Though I'm sure whining and crying will come tomorrow! LOL!
And I agree Luke should have someone there for him. Casey or someone should have called the Snyders immediately.

RIP Dr. Reid Oliver. Okay job, makeup department. Overall very good performance, Van Hansis.
Although I’ve been too disenchanted by the show (as well as too prepared) lately especially to be as affected as I could have been, there’s no doubt there were really good performances in this episode. Even though it looks like ATWT still can’t manage to make me cry after all these years. Maybe I was too busy feeling mostly scorn at TPTB. Plus, the medical situation was as expected mostly less than realistic, and in a couple of scenes especially there was kind of a lack of needed depth to me (especially with Katie).
Why ATWT continuously thinks only death can bring serious drama or some kind of strength/growth confounds me. Besides such a concept being lazy writing, it was also a tragico-dramatic plot for no logical reason whatsoever, even for a soap. TPTB have been too maddening over this, putting once again plot, plot, plot over everything that they have no problem throwing authenticity out of the window. Well, it’s caused me to have no problem not really buying so much into their drama buildup and execution. Sometimes drama just for the sake of drama can suck out a lot, and it has for me.
Now, Van getting his shot to shine at the end might be the only sure positive about this though. No wonder he loved it, lol. But I have no words for what this show, ironically through a storyline which had so much potential at the beginning, managed to turn Luke Snyder into at the end. You would have told me it’d be this way four years ago, and I might not have believed you.
Within a year or so, Luke’s seen his dad die and resurrect, his bio dad betray him yet again, his relationship with his first love come to an end and his very new boyfriend die before him. In the process, we’re told Luke is bound to spend his life feeling some guilt about tragic events regarding his loved ones (Lily, Holden, Noah, now Reid) it seems. I don’t know why they insist on making him such a martyred figure right to the end, and it’s not like he’s committed such crimes like some other soap characters to the point that he needed some kind of punishment/redemption. This is without counting the absence of drive thing. Amazing what this show’s done for the character, really, not even in a “so bad it’s actually good” kind of way. He’s really a regular character that the writers have failed with great consistency IMO.

The writers have always treated Luke like this tragic heroine, doomed to have one terrible thing after another happen to him with VERY little (and I mean very little) happiness in between. And apparently it's how he's going to leave us. It's enough to make me wish he did get back with Noah at the end just so he'd have some kind happy ending. That tells you how much I hate that this is happening to Luke.

Some people talking about Eric deserving an Emmy, but in my opinion Van deserved way more. Eric is a fantastic actor, but in general terms, Reid is a well written character, he is quite consistent and Eric played him really well. On the other hand if Luke is watchable and enjoyable is only thanks to Van's great work, because in less capable hands Luke will be a character easy to hate. The consistence of the character is very far from being good, and even with that Van manages to shine.
In my opinion is pretty normal than a talented actor like Eric shined with a character like Reid, but i really doubt that a lot of actors will shine with a character like Luke

I thought ESS was very effective, but the scenes were a showcase for Van, really. The episode was obviously written and designed for his benefit.

In fact, from the Nelson Branco interview, i'm not sure that Eric decided to put himself in the run for the emmys. Maybe i'm wrong, but that's the impression that i get

Why the hell didn't anyone in the hughes family call Lily and Holden the second Reid got to the hospital so they could be there for Luke?
Casey and Allison used to call or go get Noah anytime Luke had a hang nail? They didn't think he might need HIS family to come support him while they were all hovered around waiting for the legal paperwork then the surgery to commence?
Idiots, all of them.

Even in this episode, they managed to not really make Luke and his emotions front and center IMO, and make him look so alone despite his connections as a legacy character to so many other characters; lucky for the character, he is played by Van. I mean, really lucky. Looking back at the last few weeks, months and years, the gay characters are typically at one point or another a mere means to an end for this show, I doubt anyone can convince me otherwise. Now that we’re so close to the end, it’s never been more glaring IMO.

Katie only distracted from every scene I saw her in today. She seemed happy when she should been sad and so on. The only scene, I ultimately liked was the last scene. Everything else seemed rushed. Frankly, they should have had 2 shows with Reid dying and not just one.

Again, writing was horrid, IMO. To be honest, I actually thought it was better than I expected. But that's not really saying much. My expectations were so low, they really didn't have to do much to impress me. And Van did a good job today. That said, there were still things that drove me up the wall. Why the hell didn't they show us when Luke told Katie that Reid was dead? Why the hell didn't anyone contact Luke's family, or, really, anyone that Luke knew? Spoiler: Apparently that's for tomorrow . And am I the only one who thought the others were really pushy about getting Luke to give Reid's heart to Chris? At least twice, it felt (to me) like they were pushing him to do it, while he was mentally all over the place in grief over the death of Reid. It just reinforces my thought that Reid was just sacrificed for Chris & Katie. Not that I expect them to behave differently (given their relationship to Chris), but it still stood out in my mind. Sigh. I thought ESS was very effective, but the scenes were a showcase for Van, really. The episode was obviously written and designed for his benefit. Definitely. Farewell, Dr. Oliver.

I think I may have lost my mind. I have been crying for the last few hours over fictional characters.... and - to be quite honest - I intend to continue to do so!
What a stupid end to one of the best characters of the show.

This seems to belong here, rather than L&N, so ... What kind of Power of Attorney did they actually write up for Luke? I know there are different kinds, but, did they really have to insist that Luke couldn't make any decisions? They gave him the power to donate Reid's organs, but now that Reid's passed away he can't do anything? Whatever Angus Oliver tells them better be worth it .

The power of attorney ends when the person dies. In most states, on the executor of someone's estate is allowed to make the other decisions, especially when it comes to the decision to cremate someone. Since there was no will, a court would have to appoint someone as the executor, so it would't be as easy as just finding the next of kin.
It's hard to tell from a written interview, especially if the interviewer is someone like Branco, who isn't the best at reporting exactly what people say or how they say it, but the interview did give the impression that Eric has cooled off of the idea of submitting his name for consideration. As a newbie it would be really hard for him to get nominated, and while I don't totally agree with jjose last post, I do agree that where Eric shined is the consistency that he gave the character. I don't think that any actor could have made this character come to life, especially not in such a short period of time. Eric really understood who Reid was, which resulted in the audience understanding him, usually it takes more than six months for an audience to connect with a character, so it speaks volumes for Eric's ability that he managed to make people fall in love with the character in record time. But, while that's a gift, it's probably not one that the Emmy committee will pick up on.

Maybe i don't express well, i really find Eric a fantastic actor, and without him, probably Reid it won't be half funny as he was, but the truth is that Reid was better written than most characters on ATWT (and probably in most soaps) and a well written character is easy to play, maybe easy is not the word, but from a good actor you expect a good interpretation if the character is well written.
On the other hand Eric's problem is that supporting actor cathegory is very tough, if it was a newcomer cathegory i'm pretty sure he will win without a problem. The other problem is Reid is not exactly a soapy character, he is more like a daytime one, he is consistent, snarky, but he didn't have that over the top drama and angst that Emmy voters usually love..
And in my opinion they owe Van an emmy because he was robbed the first time he was nominated
Of course the impression that i get is personal and that doesn't mean that Eric won't be submitting for an emmy, but from a couple of interviews i read, i really get the impression that he won't

I don't see Eric being nominated. He's the find of the year and he's an amazing actor who brought a unique character to life. However, despite lots of wonderful scenes, they were the kind of meaty, showy stuff that wins Emmys. I just wish we would have had him longer, we might had the chance to see that kind of work out of him.

...I just need to say - I've cried during the scenes when Reid died. I never really believed As the World turns could do this, but... it did. And I'm still angry that they didn't do any sort of happy end... for Luke, mostly. But at the moment, I'm just plain sad. Ah, sigh. No, I don't have anything to add. Edit: okay, maybe I do. No, it wasn't fantastic writing, it wasn't the right pace, still - I have been following Dr. Reid Oliver's storyline with passion, taking the flaws and bad writing without complaint and... if you manage to ignore that, you have an enjoyable show. And for these episodes, it definitely helped to ignore the bad bits and focus on the good bits.

I think if those in the media were voting that Eric might stand a chance, but I believe the first two rounds of voting are done by actors. The first round will be those who work on each show, and then there is a blue ribbon panel made up of actors. I think since the process changed the actors have shown that they are going to vote for their friends, which is why people who don't even have storylines are nominated, and they are going to vote for those who have been in the business for a while.
This is what I was referring to. Eric was beyond good, but the episodes during the past three days were written with the purpose of getting TC and Van Emmys.
