New show on Disney + with gay characters. Carlos and Seb are confirmed as gay. There's some speculation about other characters too.

They really should have had a better title, but I do like the concept that allows them to reuse all the well-known songs from the original movies without it being weird.

Argh, videos removed already!
And here I was, extremely keen to see how Disney+ is tackling gay romance on its shows. It may serve as a portent of what to expect from the Love, Simon series next year.

It is probably due to their new Disney+ platform - breaking down on copyright hard in order to get people to pay for a subscription. I haven't watched yet - it is on my list, but signing up for Disney+, Hulu and Nat Geo has led to a lot of things being put on the list

Hard to say, since the standard may be very different for a side romance in a show compared to a show targeted to the gay audience

Hard to say, since the standard may be very different for a side romance in a show compared to a show targeted to the gay audience I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say the Love, Simon series is "targeted to the gay audience". I suspect that, like all Disney+ shows, it's targeted to a family audience. It would be very unusual if there were more than 2 regular characters identify as LGBTQ+. The majority of the cast, and storylines, will probably revolve around straight people, their lives and (not least) their romances. There's a reason they've cast so many female characters, parents and younger siblings for the main character, etc. They want to appeal to a broad audience, not just the gay community. And with hate groups like One Million Moms on the warpath (just see today's news about how they got Hallmark Channel to ban ads with lesbian couples in them), I'm not sure Disney+ will be willing to risk alienating their core audience.

It is still a side romance between a tier B character and the ensemble. The gay character for Love Simon would be front and center for the show. It is not something they can just dedicate 2 minute of showtime each episode to explore. While I agree that obviously the entire Love Simon show would not be dedicated to gay relationships (I agree with you that it will focus a lot of on the family around the main character), the main character being gay would feature much more heavily. As such, the standard would definitely be different.

Nobody cares for One million moms (because they are probably nothing more than a bunch of screaming ultras). Hallmark already apologized for pulling the add. But they better know what they want with Love, Simon. One thing is a film, and other very different is a tv show, if they are not ready to put a gay character front and center they should skip the whole project. Probably it'll be more an ensemble show, but if they treat the gay character diferently in this case it'll be difficult to justify

Nice to see they are including Seb in these promos now that he is part of the main cast. Interesting musical pick for the next season. From the articles I read, they will continue to include HSM songs in addition to Beauty and the Beast and original songs

Is there any word on the actual second season filming? I was so looking forward to S2 with Seb as a main cast

Hope that is the case and not him making a bad joke after complimenting Harry Styles

Hope that is the case and not him making a bad joke after complimenting Harry Styles I took it as him just speaking a bit too much and deciding not to go back on it or say "not in a gay way" or whatever the current version of that would be, rather than him actually coming out. I guess he's going to get backlash now for queerbaiting, but just based on the video, I didn't get that vibe. (I know he has all kinds of love triangle drama with two girls in real life)

I wasn't really sure - hence the hedging "I think.." in my post. I didn't really think it was more than carelessness in wording, but if is real - then he is welcome to the club

He is arguably the breakout star of a massively popular teen franchise, so if he is indeed bi or somewhere on the queer spectrum, it would be a big boost for our community - particularly for severely underrepresented bi men.
