I don't know, i found his coming out weird, more the type: i want to be edgy and say i find Harry Styles attractive and now i can't retract or i'll be bashed on twitter.
But hey, Lucas Hedges coming out didn't make any sense either and the gay press praised him a lot, so who knows

Well, good that it wasn't a joke or anything (assuming it isn't a PR crisis management to avoid backtracking and causing a backlash). Hope he takes all the time in the world to figure it out.

I still think it was a joke, nobody figuring out his sexuality is going to expose hinmself that way. I suppose there'll be a girlfriend (real or fake) is his near future

I honestly don't think it was a joke. I can't imagine that he would "come out" as a joke if he wants to keep his fans who are queer (or straight allies).
He's barely 20; I can believe that he is still figuring things out and not quite ready to label himself.

Why so cynical, guys? I agree with justinate... This guy just turned 20, let him figure out who he is.

True, this has no bearing on us or the show. So best of luck to Joshua and I guess we can go back to discussing the show now that it started up again
I liked the first episode so far, but I really wish they dealt with the whole Chicago school thing earlier.

How is the show treating its gay couple? I don't have Disney+ so couldn't follow this (or Diary of a Future President which also features a gay supporting character) and I dare say I'm not in the aarget audience, but I'm curious to know what kind of representation and messaging they are giving to young queer viewers. I would've loved it if a show I'd watched as a young teen included gay characters.

So far, ep1 has just been setting up the new musical, so not too much has happened yet. Outside of the main couple, I think are treated fairly much the same as the other characters. I think they are actually treated better than EJ and Gina, who were secondary to the main couple last season. They have their own scene together and not put in the background or anything.

Good for him. Really glad that more and more young actors feel able to come out - for their own sakes, and also the sake of young LGBTQ+ fans watching who won't think it's something abnormal or taboo.

To be honest i still think he did the Lucas Hedges route by coming out as absolutely nothing (which leaves all the doors open with zero consecuences) but i have to admit that i was kind of surprised he went there because he was promoted as the next teen hearthrob and this is a surprising move.
Maybe the heat after the success of Driving license was too intense for him to be burn into what it seemed a pretty fake realtionship

Showrunner Tim Federle will be adapting his award-winning novel Better Nate Than Ever as a Disney+ film to premiere next spring. He will write and direct, and has also cast one of the series leads, Joshua Bassett, in a supporting role as the title character's older brother. Speaking of the title character, Nate never identifies officially as LGBTQ+ but apparently he does express attraction to guys in the book and is just 'too young' for dating. (The film's plot is about him running away to New York to enter a Broadway audition using his brother's fake ID.) deadline.com/2021/11/better-nate-than-ever-rueby-wood-aria-brooks-more-to-star-in-disney-film-1234872665/

I'm a bit disappointed by Joe Serafini (Seb) being downgraded to guest status. I hope it is due to a scheduling conflict. It was a big win when he was promoted to regular last season.

I think I saw Seb in the background of one scene. So he isn't likely to appear much at all this season. It is so disappointing to see that he got demoted. Like justinate, I really hope it is just an issue with scheduling and he will be back next season as a full cast member.

Are we going to see leading man Ricky in a gay romance? Showrunner Tim Federle teases the possibility in the interview below but doesn't actually commit to it. Ricky's portrayer Joshua Bassett came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community last year. If Ricky does follow in Bassett's footsteps, it will be a major coup because he is the show's leading man and would make this the first Disney+ series with a queer male lead. (Love, Victor was branded as Hulu although it was made available on Disney+ outside the US.) www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a40799476/high-school-musical-joshua-bassett-queer-romance/
