Are we going to see leading man Ricky in a gay romance? Showrunner Tim Federle teases the possibility in the interview below but doesn't actually commit to it. Ricky's portrayer Joshua Bassett came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community last year. If Ricky does follow in Bassett's footsteps, it will be a major coup because he is the show's leading man and would make this the first Disney+ series with a queer male lead. (Love, Victor was branded as Hulu although it was made available on Disney+ outside the US.) www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a40799476/high-school-musical-joshua-bassett-queer-romance/I highly doubt it. They will not go there. They demoted the only regular gay character. Meanwhile the trailer showed lesbians, of course!

They will not go there. They demoted the only regular gay character. Meanwhile the trailer showed lesbians, of course! Well, I hope not ... Federle and Bassett are both queer, so they are really going to cop a LOT of (well-deserved) flak if they're coopting the despicable practice of queer-baiting. As it is, some gay folks were claiming Bassett falsely identified as a member of our community to get the heat off him for allegedly cheating on the then-underage Olivia Rodrigo with another girl. Only one of the gay regulars was downgraded (Joe Serafini as Seb) - Frankie Rodriguez who plays Carlos is still a regular and one of the campers this season. And if they were going to pull something as big as leading man Ricky falling for another guy, I doubt they would spoil it in the trailer. Given all the cast turnover, I wouldn't be surprised if what happens is Ricky comes out - perhaps even shares a kiss with another boy - and then shortly thereafter announces his departure from the school/series.

Unfortunately not happening. Yes, it's been rumored that one of the main characters from first two seasons will come out as queer this season, but if that's true, then it's definitely Ashlyn.

Yeah you're probably right if this trailer for the next episode is any indication - they're already setting Ricky up with the next girl. http://instagram.com/p/Cg-DFDNjzNU You know queerbaiting is here to stay when gay showrunners start pulling that trick.

I'm a sucker for high shool shows but the trailer of this show looks pretty awful to me.
And i'm not a fan of making gay the character just for the sake of the actor coming out (if that's what Joshua Bassett did, because frankly i don't know)

Yeah, I am perfectly fine with them keeping Ricky straight. Not every actor coming out as queer have to mean their character has to as well. That is why it is acting.

Not every actor coming out as queer have to mean their character has to as well. That is why it is acting. Normally I'd agree, but in this case I'd venture that the potential to make a real difference is bigger than the risk of stereotyping a queer actor as only capable of playing queer roles. Ricky is the male lead of a popular spin-off in a cultural touchstone franchise like HSM, played by a beloved actor with a large and vocal fanbase. Having his character come out as queer and engage in a same-sex romance would really move the needle for gay representation in pop culture. And especially in this franchise, about musical theatre, it has the potential to help a lot of queer kids who may think they need to be closeted or focus on heterosexual relationships to achieve success. There's a reason why Hollywood actors are still pressured to stay in the closet/not talk about their sexuality/same-sex partners.

So predictably, Ricky didn't come out - in fact he got together with another female love interest - but someone else did. Big Red (whose actor, Larry Saperstein, came out as bi last year) also makes the same announcement in the season 3 finale.

Now that I heard that the actress for Nini won't be back next season (kind of obvious considering how little she was in the current season), the entire season just felt like they were trying to forcefully break apart the GinaEJ couple just to give Ricky another love interest. They should have just introduced a new character next season as a love interest instead.
Interesting announcement for Big Red, but why was that announcement even there in the first place when he basically wasn't there for the rest of the season. Just.... why?

Can't say I'm mad, just disappointed. And like 80% of the disappointment is them going back to another storyline where Ricky is after EJ's girlfriend. Like, they're just going to redo season 1 but with a different girl? Ok.

surprisingly, the entire season dropped on the same day. Was expecting a weekly release, but nice surprised.
So far, the CarlosSeb relationship is basically dead with Seb not appearing even at ep3 Spoke too soon, but their relationship is definitely D tier on this show behind all the other relationships

It's a shame Carlos & Seb are given the short shrift, do you know if it's due to actor availability? I read a spoiler that suggested another potential gay relationship is hinted at between Big Red and Antoine Of course, nothing gay happened with Ricky which everyone saw coming from the outset.
