little too late for second guessing yourself that was the downside to this show i mean they had serena brother gay but he wasnt really in the main cast i wanted the nate character to be at least bi because nate dated all of the female lead on the show i always wanted nate and serena to end up together that should of been the ending we all know why the show ended the way it did because they were dating in real life which they didn't last long

Would be interesting if they play off how much social media has changed in the years since the original gossip girl first started.
Only thing I am worried about is since Eric as a character was a new creation for the original show (the book has an older brother in college instead who was straight, I believe). Hope that if they keep Eric in the show, as gay, that they will be more explicit with his storyline. Eric was fairly sexless during the original run, which isn't too surprising since it was CW

Hummm i always wonder with these reboots, they could have used the second set of books based after the original if i am honest rather that flogging a dead horse, which seams to be the way amaerican ahows are going no, rather that try something new they are just rebooting older things to give them a fresh coat of paint
the original was amazing especially for the time as it was pretty much the at the start of the social media age, and was pretty much foretelling how it can ruin peoples lives, or start careers.
i have read the books and lost count at the amount of times i have re-watched this show, but we shall have to see how they decide to swing it, but its HBO so the content might be a bit better than, anything the CW can do.

I won't get my hopes up just yet. I don't doubt they will have to update the original series to be more inclusive - I definitely don't see them being allowed to hire an all-white regular cast again - but whether they will include a major gay/bi male character remains to be seen. I fear they won't want to be off-trend; the current mandate for sexual diversity is to marginalize/eliminate/replace gay men.
It could go either way with the same team that adapted the books for television the first time returning to the helm. They did make Serena's brother gay (in the books he was very much heterosexual) and supposedly they offered to make the role a regular one in the second season, but Connor Paolo declined because he wasn't sure he was ready for the level of publicity that would bring him.
On the other hand, they made Chuck Bass, who was a main character on the show, firmly heterosexual - although his character in the books was bi. (They did however script a throwaway line in one of the later seasons, after a reluctant Chuck was kissed by a gay guy, whereupon Chuck indicated it wasn't his first same-sex kiss.)
I'm curious whether the reboot being on HBO max means they can be more salacious, which was a huge selling point of the first adaptation, even though it was laughably tame in my opinion: no nudity, no profanity, no same-sex scenes. But it managed to get that conservative parental pressure group (Parents' Television Council?) foaming at the mouth, for which I must commend the showrunners.

So i was reading online that its not actually a reboot but is set 8 years after the original, so pretty much present day, so that's a bit of relief if i am honest, but we shall see that actually happen's.

I'm actually somewhat happy if this is a time skip. They can go in a whole new direction without being beholden to the original show or original source material. After all, the main selling point of the show is an anonymous blogger releasing rumors. That is still just as relevant today as it was a few years ago.

They've been announcing some casting for this show, including Eli Brown (who played the gay regular on PLL: The Perfectionists) as the male lead. The cast seems evenly divided between males and females, but with no details on the roles (other than Eli, Emily Alyn Lind and Whitney Peak being the principal characters), it's unclear how the showrunner intends to make good on his promise to incorporate "a lot of queer content". He also claimed at the time that the reboot would cast nonwhite leads, but only 1 of the 3 lead actors (Whitney) is nonwhite.
Speculation (not confirmed as far as I can tell) is that the series will premiere later this year, but I'd take that with a healthy dose of skepticism given that they haven't even begun filming and the coronavirus outbreak has already halted filming of several TV shows.

After Covid-induced delays, the reboot began production last week and is now expected to premiere in the second half of 2021.
Still no word on gay characters (if any).

Yes that interview has been shared before, but queer does not necessarily mean gay/bi male representation. Unless Eli Brown is playing gay again, it's likely to be a queer female lead or a non-lead character. And as I noted 8 months ago (right above my last post) that same interview claimed there would be more racial diversity in the reboot, yet only one of the leads is non-white. So I don't know how much stock I would put in that interview.

First look at the cast: http://instagram.com/p/CHdop1Vj8-E The guys are Evan Mock (top left), Eli Brown (top middle) and Thomas Doherty (bottom left). Although Evan has pink hair, it's not for the role (at least not a stereotype). As far as I can tell, none of the male actors are queer. On the other hand, Jordan Alexander (the girl with the shaved head) is a lesbian while Zion Moreno (top left) is trans (she also appeared as trans in Control-Z). Not sure if their characters reflect their real-life sexuality. Some other photos show Eli hugging Jordan from behind, and also accompanying Whitney Peak. The way things stand, I'm sure there will be queer female representation, but queer male representation is unknown. I hope Thomas and Eli's characters get it on, but it's a pipe dream.

Some additional info based on casting calls for the male leads (character names may have changed): - BRAD - “A boundary pushing, sexually fluid, pleasure seeker, who loves testing the limits of his control.”
- STEVE - “Insanely rich, but with an idealistic worldview of a saint.”
- TIM - “A student who skates both as a sport and away from conflict. Unfortunately, his home life is full of said conflict and leaves him having to take care of himself most of the time.”
Tim is pretty obviously Evan Mock. I'm leaning towards Eli Brown being Steve, so Thomas Doherty sounds like he may be Brad. (Unfortunately, while he is a regular, he is not one of the principal protagonists - that would be Eli.) These photos from the set lend some credence to the idea: http://instagram.com/p/CHsMbW7jA9j

Yah, just based on how the original gossip girl was handled, I am not expecting too much here. Also, again, is it too much to ask for actors that actually looks like they can attend high school?

They've released character names and pics. Seems like if we're getting any queer male character, it will indeed be Thomas's, whose main trait is identified as Freedom which could tie into sexual fluidity, but his character is now named Max. In fact all three male characters' names have changed from the original casting calls. http://instagram.com/p/CJgh_eIAXnU http://instagram.com/p/CJgvt9dAlMF http://instagram.com/p/CJgvxeDgsJW Yah, just based on how the original gossip girl was handled, I am not expecting too much here. Also, again, is it too much to ask for actors that actually looks like they can attend high school? I think they have some restrictions on using juvenile actors so they need to be at least 18. This reboot is also on HBO Max so maybe they intend have some nudity like Tiny Pretty Things? The three guys are between 21-25 so not as bad as some cases where high schoolers are played by actors in their 30s.

Sad that he is not the principal protagonist, but hopefully he gets more screen time than Eric did in the original. Also, I hope sexual fluid doesn't just means he sometimes kiss guys in parties or something, but he will eventually end up with a girl anyway cause they always have to end up pairing the cast together.

I am concerned that this is exactly what we might get. I think that Max, being a regular cast member unlike Eric (Connor Paolo), could get better airtime and be better integrated into the main storylines, but I am intensely skeptical about the degree to which they will portray any same-sex relationships for him. The main cast consist of 5 females (1 of them played by a trans actress) and 3 males. Even if two of the main females are involved in a lesbian relationship (very likely), that still leaves another 3 to be paired up with guys - and we have exactly 3 guys. They could make the trans actress's character trans too, and have Max be pansexual. (I would prefer they make the trans girl a love interest for one of the straight boys.) Or they could have him date a girl who struggles to deal with his bisexuality; after all, that is one of the major barriers bi men face in their love lives. I hope I'm wrong, and they will give Max a boyfriend, but I won't hold my breath. I have been disappointed too many times before by shows which tout diversity and then let down queer male representation.

If this show is anything like the original, they will pair off every possible combination of characters that is even the slightest bit plausible. Like when they were putting Dan and Blair together for a while.
You are probably right about them being unlikely to give Max a boyfriend. Usually, I might hold out hope they will add more cast as the show grows, but considering the show is starting off with 7 main characters, it already feels a bit bloated.

There's an interview with the new cast in Cosmo. They're very coy with spoilers, and there's pretty much just a couple of lines about Max. Source: www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a36124884/gossip-girl-new-hbomax-cast-cosmo-cover-interview-may-june-2021/I'm always thrilled to see Thomas naked but I'm not feeling optimistic about his prospects for gay romance. I suspect he will make out with a male guest star or two, but if he has a primary love interest, it is almost definitely going to be a girl (maybe the trans girl) because the cast heavily skews female; this photoshoot makes it glaringly obvious there are twice as many girls as boys on the young cast. Now some of the cast may have older love interests who are not among the "teens", but realistically there are simply too many girls for Max to be paired up with another guy. Thomas is also interviewed in Man About Town; this is behind a paywall, but he reveals that I was right about his character being pansexual, and that the show is basically a hybrid of the original Gossip Girl and Euphoria. Again, he emphasizes that the show is very secretive about the plot or characters, so I doubt there is any more info in the article itself. I'm left feeling bereft; considering how many gay boys were fans of the original show, finally getting representation with a pansexual guy who has the occasional same-sex fling, but no meaningful romance with another guy, frankly feels like a downgrade. Even on the original show, they were going to make Serena's gay brother Eric a regular, if the actor hadn't turned it down. We also know the show will debut in July.

A poster on another board brought to my attention this Vanity Fair interview with Evan Mock who plays Aki, one of the reboot's other male leads. Elsewhere his character is said to be in a relationship with Emily Alyn Lind's character Audrey but there's an interesting quote in the article that Aki is still “figuring things out sexually.” It might be nothing, or we might just be getting a second non-hetero male lead. www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/03/evan-mock-says-the-next-gen-gossip-girl-is-blunt-and-woke
