Because right now a gay country singer getting mainstream success is scifi.
In UK charts being gay is not a problem since long time ago. I remember the whole fuss about Will Young coming out and that was the end of his career and all that jazz, and well, it was not. Last month and openly gay singer (Sam Smith) follow in the number one a band (Years and years) with two opnely gay members. That was not news.
In the USA is different, last year was probably the year with most openly gay singers getting success on USA charts, and pop radio is receptive now, but only a year ago it seemed really difficult to believe that an openly gay singer could get top 10 on pop radio. Sam Smith was the first openly gay singer to have a top 10 hit on pop since Elton John's Can you feel the love tonight, and the first to reach number one being openly gay. Not even someone so popular as Adam Lambert just out of American Idol was fairly treated (he is hopefull with his new release and he has reasons to be because right now he has a real chance)
But that's pop, on other genres things are not as bright, and country is probably the less receptive of all genres. You can be openly gay an be a successful songwriter, that's no a problem and there are a good bunch of examples, but a singer an receive airplay in country radio, that's mission impossible (not even receiving grammy nominations got Brandy Clark a little airplay)

Nashville has one of the worst gay storylines I've ever seen. Yes, I'm harsh, but the show deserves it. It looked like it had so much promise back when Will was introduced. It was well written in the beginning, Will making his move on Gunnar, their heart to heart talk in the prison cell.. even Will's attempted suicide. It all made sense and it was well done. But that's where things started to go downhill. They got him a beard, they had him marry his beard and even have a reality show.. all of this instead of letting Will learn from his mistakes and come to terms with who he is. There's no progression for the character.. none what so ever. Every time it seems like he accepts himself it's like he take one step forward and three steps back. It just goes around in circles. He told Layla he was gay and needed to get out of the marriage, so he gave her a divorce. Fine, great, awesome. But then he went back to his self hating way when he met that other gay country singer he was writing songs with. He wouldn't even admit he was gay! It's just so incredibly stupid. I know the country singing business is conservative, but this is taking it to a whole new level. And even so.. why can't this tv show set a better example? They have gone through showing the homophobic side of the business, why not show that a gay guy CAN make it?! Even if it's not that easy in real life, if they do the storyline right I think it could be good. That said, I lost hope a long time ago. I just don't understand.. why introduce a gay character with this lame writing? With this half assed attempt it would be better to have no gay character at all. I'm sorry, I just can't stomach this storyline anymore. I'll watch if/when he accepts himself and if/when he gets a love life. Until then.. nope. Not interested. I see it mostly the same way. If Will is on denial, and when the show will show this as something realistic, Ok: Than can Will not be openly gay and at the same time a succesfull countrystar, but why he cant have secret affairs like mostly all famous peolple they are hidden gay like in reality, or buy a vipcallboy, or have onlinegaysex. And with time maybe they could Will come out of the closet and the show could make a statement with it.

I am not sure which chart you are referring to in the USA cos so far, Sam Smith has not gotten a no. 1 hit/album on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles and Billboard 200 Albums. His biggest hit, "Stay With Me" and debut album made it to no. 2 on both charts. Adam Lambert, however, did score his no. 1 album on the Billboard charts with "Trespassing", which is his second album and holds the title of the first openly gay singer to do so.

Adam Lambert, however, did score his no. 1 album on the Billboard charts with "Trespassing", which is his second album and holds the title of the first openly gay singer to do so. The key word was POP, i was talking of the pop chart, and Stay with me was the first and only song of an openly gay singer to reach the top of the pop chart for 2 weeks. If i was talking about the billboard hot 100 Sam wouldn't be the first in reach the top 10 since Elton John (an in fact it would be Candle in the wind/Something about the way you look tonight and not Can you feel the love tonight the last song from an openly gay singer) in that case it would be Whataya want from me which was top 10 on the hot 100 (but only 13 on the pop chart). And the mention of the pop chart was intentional, because it was radio the one more reluctant to play gay singers. Tresspassing was number one on the billboard top 200, unfortunately for Adam his label just didn't care and didn't promote him. And yes, Sam was only number 2 (Lana del Rey was number one that week), but the truth is he sold almost the double than Adam in his first week. I will be very surprised in Adam's new album won't do way better than the last. Maybe this time he won't score a number one (that depends of timing and the other releases) but i think this time he will be promoted and radio will be more receptive to his songs But of course, all this is on pop. Yesterday i read a billboard article about how things are changing on hip hop and the fact that ILovemakonnen refused to deny the gay rumours surrounding him, and the fact that he and other mainstream rappers are changing some stereotypes. I don't know if Frank Ocean opened the gates, he refused to idenfy himself, and he is an R&B singer but linked to a lot of rappers, but the truth is as homophobic as it's the past of hip hop, they seem way nearer to a change than country. The scandal with Little big town's Girl crush only shows how narrow minded some country listeners are (and the song is not even gay by any means). It was a storm in a glass of water but in the end showed big resistance to change, and how conservative (and not only in a political way) country radio stations are

Hopefully we'll see more of Will and Kevin in the upcoming season. Though I have to admit I liked Brent more than this new guy. I know Will and Brent weren't exactly a good match, but I still think they had nice chemistry together, oh well.. I will probably get used to Will and Kevin but it will take some time. They just need to flesh out Kevin's character a bit more. Should be interesting to see Will navigate being an openly gay country artist too!
