I don't know if this is a good idea, it sounds more like scifi than any realist description of country music (and strips of the powerful message of Will's storyline)

Well, at least it seems that the whole openly gay country superstar was an exageration and they are going to give a more realistic take on the character.
Right now country music is at one of its lowest points in creativity and diversity (i'm talking about mainstream country, of course).
In last week's chart the whole top 10 were males (with a female collaboration in the Blake Shelton's song) most of them fit in the mold of bro country with all that implies (the same lyrics, the same themes, the same sound). The first group was at 12, and the first female was at 20 (of course Miranda Lambert, and i say of course because if you look a female high on a country airplay charts the odds are she will be Miranda Lambert or Carrie Underwood).
There are very successful gay writers on Nashville, Shane McNally is the perfect example, but right now an openly gay successful country singer seems an utopia, in a chart where females struggle to find success, and even male singers who don't fit the mold have a hard time (Hunter Hayes, even after being hyped and getting a pair of big hits is struggling with his recent songs) or even worse, male stars have problems to get airplay for their songs when they get a little creative with the sound (Eric Church's The outsiders peaked in its first week)
So at least they are showing that Kyle Dean Massey's character being openly gay come with a cost. That it's way more realistic and in fact validate Will's struggles which would be pointless in the other case

Moving at a snail pace but I think we're starting to get somewhere for the moment.

This storyline just goes around in circles. It's time Will comes to terms with his sexuality, I'm sick of this self-hating crap. I can't stomach another season like this. Will just needs to accept himself and get a love interest already.

Well, Nashville has a big problem in terms to advance with the storyline, there's absolutely no precendent of an openly gay country singer being successful, at least not the way Will is promoted on the show.
Empire has a similar problem, but of course Jamal has a lot more to do apart of his career, and truth be told i think there are a lot more probabilities of a successful R&B openly gay singer than a country one. Not that radio was all over Frank Ocean, but for an artist with a quite unique sound he sold a lot of albums.
And on the country charts you have radio giving inclusive songs the cold shoulder and even ones that are perceived as promoting "the gay agenda" received some backlash. Now that all the bigots hearing country radio realized that girl crush is a song about jealousy and not about a lesbian relationship it seems the song will get a fair chance of success, probably Kacey Musgraves' Biscuits won't have such luck.
Anyway, at least they could give Will a little self acceptance and a little less depressing storylines for a season, but with his father on the picture i don't think that'll happen

Anyway, at least they could give Will a little self acceptance and a little less depressing storylines for a season, but with his father on the picture i don't think that'll happen Nashville has one of the worst gay storylines I've ever seen. Yes, I'm harsh, but the show deserves it. It looked like it had so much promise back when Will was introduced. It was well written in the beginning, Will making his move on Gunnar, their heart to heart talk in the prison cell.. even Will's attempted suicide. It all made sense and it was well done. But that's where things started to go downhill. They got him a beard, they had him marry his beard and even have a reality show.. all of this instead of letting Will learn from his mistakes and come to terms with who he is. There's no progression for the character.. none what so ever. Every time it seems like he accepts himself it's like he take one step forward and three steps back. It just goes around in circles. He told Layla he was gay and needed to get out of the marriage, so he gave her a divorce. Fine, great, awesome. But then he went back to his self hating way when he met that other gay country singer he was writing songs with. He wouldn't even admit he was gay! It's just so incredibly stupid. I know the country singing business is conservative, but this is taking it to a whole new level. And even so.. why can't this tv show set a better example? They have gone through showing the homophobic side of the business, why not show that a gay guy CAN make it?! Even if it's not that easy in real life, if they do the storyline right I think it could be good. That said, I lost hope a long time ago. I just don't understand.. why introduce a gay character with this lame writing? With this half assed attempt it would be better to have no gay character at all. I'm sorry, I just can't stomach this storyline anymore. I'll watch if/when he accepts himself and if/when he gets a love life. Until then.. nope. Not interested.
