Not very happy with the guy who plays Ian, but.. I'm still interesting in seeing this American adaption. I have a hard time thinking it can top the English original version, but we'll see

If we could decide who we loved, it would be much simpler, but less magical.

Is it just me, or does America have any original ideas anymore. Or they just taking them all from other countries?

I'm not really interested in the US version (I don't care about the show if the Maguire brothers aren't there) but for those who are, and can see Showtime's website, they are showing the first 20 minutes of the premiere.

i'm watching it. and its not bad... it seems like they're bringing Micky into the picture much earlier than the UK version and last night's episode Ian and Micky had sex while Ian and Cash were caught.
i hope things in the US version are different. i found Ian in the UK version somewhat unlikable, and i like this Ian much more. Micky's response to Ian after the fact was so different than UK Mickey's initial love sickness.

I think the problem is folks don't realize how many shows from the US are regularly shown in other countries as part of their daily programing AND how many shows in the UK and other countries are actually adaptations of shows from the US.
There are dozens of US shows that were remakes of UK shows that were incredibly successful and critically acclaimed but it wasn't as easy in the past to know where a show originated (pre Internet) so there wasn't as much attention payed to whether or not a show was a remake.
I also think watching shows in other languages than English or even shows produced outside of the US just isn't as popular among American audiences as it might be in other countries.
We here are a unique bunch but most American's aren't watching BBC America or even PBS shows from the UK.
In some respect I think it's kind of a shame that US audiences won't get to watch Skins, Shameless and Being Human (US) without the shadow of the UK versions of the shows all over everything because I think it effects the way the shows are received by critics, recappers and bloggers and by extension, viewers as well.
I never watched QAF UK (though I've heard it was brilliant) because I wanted to be able to just watch the US version (the only all episodes box set I own besides Buffy) and embrace the American version of the characters without comparison.
I know that would be impossible to do now with folks doing scene by scene, word by word comparisions with Shameless US and Shameless UK. LOL

I don't think it's impossible to watch any of these shows without seeing the UK version. I would actually say most of the viewers of the US versions have probably never seen the UK versions. Shameless is only on Sundance a niche cable channel, and on Youtube.

I know there have been some complaints about the US not having any original ideas. I tend to agree seeing as though this is one of three UK remakes that I know of (the other two being Skins and Being Human) that premiered just this year. However I think this is by far the best. It is a great show on it's own and it's changing it up a bit and making it fit Chicago and a US audience. The entire show is great. I'll even go as far as saying I like this Ian better (though I like the UK's Micky better...so far).
The only thing I'm not liking is Ian's distance from the family. I'm liking his storylines, however he is not as involved with the family as the rest and is always missing from the big family scenes such as faking Frank's death or having fun with sober Frank. I'm always like: "where's Ian?" This might just turn out to be part of his character though. For example how he ran away when he heard his mother was back in last week's episode and didn't say a word when he finally confronted her.
Just stuff that's been on my mind. Sorry for rambling.

I've watched the first two series of the UK version and the US version. I think both are terrific in their own way. As mentioned earlier I thought why on earth make US versions if they are going to be identical or close to. US Skins is unwatchable. Period. No Maxxie? Whats the point. Same thing with Being Human. I have to say though that the US Shameless is very good. I'm not sure if Carl is going to grow into the hunk that is Elliot Tittensor but who can tell. Jeremy Allen White as Lip is awesome. Bill Macy is good as Frank but UK Frank takes the lead. Emmy Rossum as Fiona is brilliant, I pray she stays longer than the UK Fiona did. Justin Chatwin (Steve), even with all the skinny ass remarks just can't compete with James McAvoy. I hope he stays away. I hope we see more of Mickey (Noel Fisher), he cleans up quite well. Noel had to leave for a movie part so that's why he is in jail.
Finally, the most important character, Ian, I have to say the nod goes to Cameron Monaghan. Nothing against Gerard Kearns but Cameron is more believable as a 16 year old. the writers I think have made the US Ian a little stronger character, he has a plan for his future but still cares deeply for his family. Look how he turned down a chance to get out of the neighborhood with his real father. Cameron himself is a very sweet guy and has played so many different parts. Lastly, I think he is just gorgeous. He has that innocent boy look with a bit of the devil in his smile.

I can't believe it took me this long to get into the show! I actually prefer the US remake to the UK one. And that's the first time I prefer a remake over the original. That says a lot. I think it's really good, and I'm glad it got a second season. All the actors are doing a great job, I doubt it would have been this successful without them, they really make this show what it is.
Again, I can't wait until January! ;D

I think both versions of the show are excellent, with one exception -- I prefer the characterization of Mickey in the US version. Sure, he may be a punk - but at least he is self-confident punk. I get tired of the original Mickey always being put down for not being smart enough or talented enough etc, by his family-- I wish he would develop the confidence of the American version. The British version of Mickey is perhaps too loyal to his family - to the point, where he does everything he can to keep the peace and loses sight of his own happiness.
