A brief interview with Danny Miller from DS
'Emmerdale' Danny Miller talks Aaron, court, awards
Aaron Livesy faces one of his darkest periods yet, as he awaits trial for the murder of his boyfriend Jackson Walsh. The assisted-suicide storyline saw Danny Miller's alter ego charged with killing his paraplegic partner last month.
Digital Spy grabbed several minutes with the award-winning actor, as he went between takes, to discuss upcoming court scenes, Pauline Quirke's exit and his thoughts on receiving another 'Best Actor' nod in the TV Choice awards.
How are we going to see things progress for Aaron over the coming weeks? "You are going to see a side of Aaron which is quite interesting in my opinion; a side that hasn't really been seen before. He's quite determined that whatever will be, will be. He's not interested in anything else other than getting on with life - trying to deal with what's happened and moving on. Onwards and upwards really."
We've heard that he will go on a "long and deeply meaningful journey" now - will this lead to resolution for Aaron? "Obviously there will be light at the end of the tunnel, but he's got to get through the dark patch first. Whatever the verdict is, it'll be [Aaron] having to deal with that and adjust to life [after] the verdict. It's in the judge and jury's hands."
What can you tell us about the trial episodes? "They are just brilliant episodes, they really are. They're very interesting and we've got some great guest actors in to play the defence and prosecution. They were fantastic. We really enjoyed it. It was different to be able to film something like that in a courtroom, instead of just the village or The Woolpack. It's always nice to get out to location and do some different stuff. It was like filming a drama - really good."
How do you hope things progress between Aaron and Hazel before Pauline Quirke leaves? "Well I hope that before Pauline goes, they are happy again. Obviously at the moment there's not a lot of laughs because of what's happened. I just want them to be happy again and I want them to share a nice, emotional moment before she goes. We'll see."
Aaron's dark journey is great for you to get your teeth into - are you enjoying it? "Really enjoying it! It's really interesting actually because I'm receiving my scripts - and not that I'm not normally interested - but I'm just interested in his whole journey now; What's next for him? Where's he going? Where's this leading to? Why is he doing this? Why is he doing that? I kind of feel a bit sorry for him really. He's had a lot happen to him over the past two years. It's great for me to get my teeth into. There's not really much more to say other than the fact that it's interesting and that I'm enjoying it. I really am enjoying myself."
Congratulations on your TV Choice 'Best Actor' nomination - how much does it mean to you to receive recognition from fans and critics? "It's always nice to receive an award. It's one of those things... but I've got a big team behind me here at Emmerdale and I think it's nice for us all to get recognition through one person or through two people. It's nice for the other guys to sit back and see that we're getting recognised now; people are voting for us. It's such an honour and a privilege. I think a lot of people forget just how much of an honour it is to be even nominated, let alone to win something. If you win, you get out there and you win an award, you've got to be over the moon that people have been moved by your performances and have taken the time to go on the internet and vote for you."
Emmerdale is bidding farewell to a number of faces over the coming months - can we expect to see Aaron remain in the village? "You can, yes! I'm not looking to go anywhere at the moment. I'm happy. I've got good friends, good storylines - why would I want to go? I'm perfectly happy where I am; so no plans to go anywhere."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
He has also been seen filming in the village on the webcams today.
It may be a possible sign that it will be a not guilty verdict

Mon 11 July Bob continues to worry about Hazel.
Tue 12 July Chas is incredulous and intervenes when she sees Aaron and Hazel together in public, talking about Jackson's headstone.
Wed 13 July Meanwhile, tersely refusing Declan's offer to restore Dale Head to how it was, Hazel explains to Bob that she doesn't feel ready to let go yet. Aaron's puzzled when Hazel refuses to let him in when he comes to visit her, having converted Dale Head into a shrine to Jackson.
Aaron stalks out when Cain tries to get him to listen to Chas and talk to his barrister
Thur 14 July In the café, Jerry lays into Aaron and Carl is forced to intervene and hold Jerry back when he tries to go for Aaron. Chas is devastated to see that Aaron doesn't even try to defend himself when Jerry insists that his statement will see him go to prison. As Jerry is bundled out by Bob and Carl, Hazel and Aaron are left reeling with guilt.
Bob's annoyed with Chas for pressuring Hazel to pay for an expensive lawyer for Aaron, but Chas explains that she contacted his barrister and discovered he has no experience in this area. Carl hears Chas tells Bob that she needs £70,000 to pay for a decent lawyer and asks Scarlett for the money to pay for it. Later, Chas reels when Carl arrives telling her that he has the money...
8pm Chas is conflicted when Carl asks whether she could forgive herself if she doesn't accept his offer and Aaron does end up in prison. Gennie tries to talk Chas out of it, aware there will inevitably be strings attached, but Chas is wavering. Chas feels bad for pressurising Hazel when she realises that she's stressing about trying to scrape together some money, so she reveals she's got hold of the cash.
Later, Chas is relieved when Aaron takes in her suggestion about hiring a top-notch lawyer, but she's left frustrated when he walks out after discovering Carl is the source and later tells her to refuse his money.
Fri 15 July Chas asks Hazel to try and talk Aaron into accepting her money. Aaron comes to the café and Hazel encourages him to reconsider accepting the offer. Wanting to talk to Hazel, Chas barges into Dale Head and is stunned to see a shrine to Jackson. Feeling for Hazel, Chas points out that she's stopping herself from moving on.
Chas is unsure of what to say when Hazel tells her that she wants Jackson back - she knows he could have lived a life like Steve is. Concerned for Hazel, Chas tells Aaron that he needs to talk to her. Realising Hazel's not okay, Aaron takes control and asks Chas to leave - pointing out there's nothing she can do.
Hazel meets with Steve and Annie, but Aaron is keen to avoid them.

Stuff from the soap magazines transcribed from scans on the DannyMillerfans website.
Hazel’s breakdown Distraught at the loss of Jackson, Hazel barricades herself in their home and creates a shrine to her son.
Hazel Rhodes is teetering on the very edge of an emotional collapse this week, as she continues to mourn son Jackson Walsh. Ostracised by many of her neighbours after complying with Jackson’s wish to end his own life, Hazel tries to avoid leaving her own home – and refuses to let anyone inside to see her. Unable to cope with the fact that her beloved boy is no longer around, Hazel has transformed her home into a shrine to her son – something she’s unwilling to share with anyone. But since Jackson’s boyfriend, Aaron, is about to go on trial for his murder and needs her support, distraught Hazel must somehow be persuaded to rally… “Reality has hit home for Hazel and she’s not coping very well at all” says Pauline Quirk, who plays her. “Turning Jackson’s room into a memorial is her way of coping. She just wants to be where he was, and she’s not mixing with anyone, or going out, it’s not healthy” Hazel refuses to allow Declan to convert Dale Head back to the way it was before it was kitted out for Jackson’s needs, and can’t even allow pal Bob over the threshold. But when she refuses to let Aaron into the house, he can’t understand why – particularly since he has the threat of jail hanging over him. “Hazel is pretty terrified at the prospect of Aaron going to jail for killing Jackson” reveals Pauline. “She feels terribly guilty that Aaron had to step in and help Jackson after she buckled at the last minute. The last thing she wants is for Aaron to end up behind bars. She’s already lost one boy and doesn’t want to lose another, so she’s really worried about standing up in court and giving evidence – she feels under immense pressure to get everything right.” While Hazel grieves, Aaron is also feeling the strain. Carl has to step in when Jackson’s dad, Jerry, launches himself at Aaron – and the lad doesn’t even try to defend himself as Jerry fumes that his police statement will see Aaron sent down for his role in Jackson’s death. “Understandably, Jerry is absolutely horrified by what’s happened and blames Hazel and Aaron” shares Pauline. “Hazel understands how he feels, but it’s only her and Aaron who really know how much Jackson wanted this, Jerry wasn’t part of it, so he can’t possibly understand – and whatever Hazel says now isn’t going to change his mind.” Meanwhile, Aaron’s mother, Chas, is insisting that Hazel pay for an expensive solicitor to save Aaron from a prison sentence – an altercation which eventually leads to an emotional truce for the troubled pair. As an unlikely ally for the troubled Hazel, might Chas be able to help the mum through the next few weeks? “Chas barges into Hazel’s house, so she sees the way Jackson’s room is” explains Pauline. “Hazel explains that she just wanted to feel close to Jackson, Chas understands that – she’s brilliant with her". And as Hazel makes the sad confession that all she wants is Jackson back, the mum’s bond. “They’re united in the fact that they’re main concern is Aaron” adds the star. “Now somebody has seen what a bad way Hazel is in, she can hopefully get the support she needs as well..”
-------------------------------------------------------------
Cash row With Chas needing a whopping £70,000 to pay for a decent lawyer for Aaron, she’s desperate. So she’s stunned when her former fiancé, Carl, offers her the cash – and despite their history, she’s unable to turn it down, terrified of what it might mean for Aaron’s future if she does. But it’s Aaron himself who rejects Carl’s money in the end, refusing to accept help from a man he loathes for his mistreatment of Chas. Can anyone change the lads mind before its too late?
----------------------------------------------------
Aaron gets his day in court Will the jury find Aaron guilty or not guilty of killing Jackson? Aaron’s trial for Jackson’s assisted suicide is coming sooner than we expected with these sneak pictures of Danny miller & Adam Thomas filming at Dewsbury Town hall which was doubling as a courthouse. In his best suit, Aaron is looking his best but we worry it’s going to take a lot more than that to get the jury on side. Yes, Jackson did want to die, and, many would argue, had every right to end his life. But its what Aaron (and Hazel who should equally be on trial) did that is the problem. For there is a very clear law that assisted suicide is against the law. Emmerdale has done a brilliant job bringing this issue to our screens but it is such a sensitive issue it could be they won’t be able to do right for doing wrong.
The case for the prosecution. It doesn’t look good for Aaron as the evidence stacks up….. 1 – Assisted suicide is against the law – and it is beyond dispute Jackson was physically incapable of ending his life without help. 2 – It was Aaron not Hazel who held the lethal drink to Jackson’s lips and granted his wish to die. 3 – Immediately after Jackson’s death, a distraught Aaron told Aaron “I killed him….” And it looks like Adam is being called as a witness. 4 – Jackson’s dad Jerry is determined someone will pay for his son’s death and this fortnight threatens (sorry, couldn’t read the last line of this from the scan)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hazel’s secret shrine Pauline Quirk reveals Hazel can’t bear to let Jackson go…and is terrified she’ll lose Aaron too.
Hazel felt helping Jackson end his life was the right thing to do because it was what Jackson wanted. She still believes it but that doesn’t mean losing him is any easier to bear. “She’s turned his room into a shrine – she just wants to be in that room where Jackson was” Pauline tells Soaplife when we chat between scenes “Its her way of coping” Or not coping….
With Jackson gone and Aaron charged with murder, is Hazel doubting what they did? She has obviously done what was asked of her and she still firmly believes she did the right thing, it was what Jackson wanted. But of course now reality’s hitting home and she’s not coping very well at all.
Assisted suicide is illegal….Did Hazel and Aaron really think they would get away with it? They were going along with what Jackson had planned. Hazel thought it was all going to be okay because Jackson had made sure it was. She was just thinking about what he wanted – everything else afterwards came as a huge shock.
Why is Hazel so anxious to keep visitors away from Dale Head? Hazel’s been stopping everyone from coming into the house so we know something’s going on. She’s not mixing with anybody, she’s not going out. And when Chas storms in we see she’s turned Jackson’s room into a shrine to him, it’s obviously disturbing and isn’t healthy.
How does Chas react when she sees the shrine? Hazel explains she wants to be close to Jackson and Chas is brilliant. She lets Bob and Aaron know Hazel needs friends. Their relationship turns a corner – they’re united and their main concern is Aaron.
Is Aaron able to comfort Hazel? Yes he is. Because they are the two people in this world that went through it. He reassures her it’s all going to be all right. Obviously there are still a lot of doubts in her mind, but they have a close relationship.
The trial’s coming up….is Hazel confident Aaron will walk free? She wants to believe it will be all right but she’s starting to panic. She’s terrified she’s going to fall to pieces in the witness box. She feels under immense pressure to get it right, but to be honest she doesn’t now what the hell’s going to happen.
How will she feel if Aaron does get sent down? Devastated. She feels terribly guilty she wasn’t able to do what Jackson wanted at the last minute and that her act of letting Aaron give the drink to Jackson turned everything on it’s head. So whatever guilt she’s got for what’s already happened she will have that on top. As she says, “I’ve already lost one boy, I don’t want to lose another”.

From the soap mags
Aaron’s trial Grief stricken Aaron faces his fears in the courtroom Since he helped his beloved Jackson die, heartbroken Aaron has been struggling with his guilt. He’s tortured and convinced that he needs to be punished for holding the lethal drink to Jackson’s lips and causing his death – even though that’s what Jackson wanted. This fortnight, the tormented teenager has to cope with standing up in a courtroom and listening as his friends and family give their evidence against him. Aaron thinks he should go to prison, but Jackson didn’t want him to be blamed for his death. Desperate to do what his dearly departed boyfriend asked for, Aaron pleads not guilty. And that means he has to suffer a trial. As he takes the stand, Aaron is calm even when Hazel’s evidence blames young Mr Livesy for everything. And things get worse when first Jerry, then Adam, don’t exactly paint Aaron in a good light. However, it’s not until the court sees Jackson’s video diary that Aaron crumbles. Later, Aaron shuts himself in his room and watches the tape over and over again. He’s full of self-loathing and begins to question why he did what he did. A chat with Ashley doesn’t help and by the time Aaron’s back in court, he’s determined to go to jail. As the jury decides if Aaron is guilty or not, he’s not thinking straight and when he goes back into the courtroom to hear the verdict, it’s clear he’s a man on the edge. Just how will he react when the jury tells him his fate?
------------------------------------------------------------
Aaron hopes they lock him up and throw away the key
Danny Miller gives us the lowdown on Aaron’s dramatic court case…..
What state of mind is Aaron in before his murder trial? He’s not coping, but his main focus is to look after Hazel like he promised Jackson. Aaron needs to stay true to Jackson’s wishes and protect her. He doesn’t care what happens to him. He wants to be punished because he killed the only man he’s ever loved.
Has Aaron been surprised by the reaction of the villagers? Well, he’s been disappointed by Ashley’s lack of support but he’s not really interested in anyone else’s opinion. Aaron’s got so much guilt, self-loathing and hatred, and he’s more overcome by that than the fact he’s lost Jackson.
Was it a shock for Aaron to be charged with murder? No, because the charge is based on evidence – Aaron was the one who took the glass and held it to Jackson’s lips. It’s made him realise he’s got to deal with the prospect of going to prison, but Aaron is so consumed with guilt he’d be happy to be locked up and have the key thrown away!
What happens when Aaron takes the stand in court? He answers all the prosecution’s questions, and doesn’t fight his corner at all because he wants to get sent to prison. Aaron’s all over the place, and when he sees Jackson’s video on the screen he gets very emotional. One of the prosecutors says that Jackson had many years ahead of him, and that hits home for Aaron.
Does Aaron regret helping Jackson to die so soon? He regrets not waiting longer – Jackson was only 23 years old and he wasn’t dying. Jackson’s video diary makes Aaron realise time could have made a difference but Hazel’s certain they were right.
Did you enjoy filming the scenes in the courtroom? It involved long days and was quite daunting. It was like being in a theatre with a big audience, but I think all the cast and crew pulled it off and the end result is going to be fantastic Dominic (Brunt, who plays Paddy) was just amazing – he made me cry when Paddy tells the court how proud he is to be Aaron’s father figure. The director joked that I wasn’t meant to get teary, but how could I not cry at that!?
Aaron’s had a very turbulent year, of course. How have you coped with all the challenges as an actor? I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every single challenge that Emmerdale has thrown at me over the last three years. I feel extremely honoured that I’m trusted enough as a 20-year-old actor to do amazing storylines like this. Sometimes I think I’d like Aaron to be happier than he’s been but there’s not really any drama in being happy is there? That would be dull!
How do you unwind after filming such draining scenes? I like to keep fit so I go to the gym and do a bit of boxing. I always sit in my car after filming has finished and think “God, I’ve just been paid for that” I do get tired sometimes, but I’m living the dream – many people would cut their arm off to do this!
Aaron’s fate is being kept secret, but how would he cope if he’s sent to prison? I think he’d just get on with it. He’d probably become a bit of a victim to abuse because his guilty conscience wouldn’t allow him to defend himself. In Aaron’s mind he’s going to jail; a not-guilty verdict is just unthinkable – it would be absolutely unbearable for him.
How will Aaron’s story unfold in the next few months? I can’t reveal too much, but what’s next is another huge challenge. Aaron’s still struggling to deal with the consequences of his actions, and things are going to get very bleak. I can’t wait for it all to play out though – I’m happy for them to keep throwing these dramatic stories at me.
-----------------------------------------------
Guilty! That’s the verdict that Aaron wants for helping lover Jackson end his life…. And he may not be able to live with himself if he doesn’t get it……. That Jackson is dead and that Aaron helped him to die is not in doubt. That assisted suicide is against the law is not in doubt. What is in doubt is whether Aaron should go to prison. Jackson left a video intended to leave the jury in no doubt that, other than hold the glass with the lethal dose of medication, he killed himself. But actor Danny Miller tells Soaplife that Aaron also needs convincing. “He’s not fighting his corner because he wants to go down” he says “He’s got so much guilt, self-loathing and hatred about what he’s done” “He regrets not waiting longer. One of the prosecutors says that Jackson had years to come and Aaron thinks “Yes you’re right”, he did have years to come, he wasn’t dying” “Aaron’s got so much guilt that he’s happy for someone to lock him up and throw away the key” And as his trial progresses it looks like that’s just what might happen. As he threatened, Jackson’s dad, Jerry, gives a damning testimony against Aaron. But unexpectedly, when Hazel, Paddy and Adam take the witness stand to support Aaron they instead make things worse….. First Hazel ends up implicating Aaron when she’s tripped up by the prosecutor. Next, Paddy is forced to reveal that Aaron once viciously attacked him. And, under oath, Adam has to repeat to the court the words Aaron aid to him immediately after Jackson’s death – “I killed him”. Is Aaron shocked by how badly his case seems to be going? “When he was first charged it hit him like a ton of bricks” says Danny. “He realised then that he perhaps didn’t think it through as much as he should have done. He had thought Jackson had put so much evidence forward that it would be okay…. If he is found guilty will Aaron be able to forgive himself? “A not-guilty verdict is unthinkable for him” warns Danny “it would be unbearable for him to live with” So – damned if he goes down and damned if he doesn’t.

Mon 25 July Everyone seems anxious about the first day of the trial, but Aaron appears calm. As the court case begins, Chas worries about Hazel crumbling under the prosecution's questions as she's called to the witness box. Chas despairs as Hazel tries to defend Aaron's actions but is tripped up by the prosecutor and ends up implicating Aaron.
Chas leaves the court frustrated and as her emotions boil over, Aaron overhears her criticising Hazel. Aaron remains detached as Chas apologises to Hazel, telling her that she must stay strong.
Tue 26 July Ashley has decided to attend the second day of the trial, but Laurel warns him to be sensitive. As Jerry is in the witness box, the judge warns him from speculating about Aaron's hold over Jackson and instructs the jury to strike his comments from the record. Afterwards, Hazel has a go at Jerry but Aaron tells her that he has a right to be there.
Aaron's full of self-doubt when the defence play Jackson's video and Chas and Hazel are devastated when Adam is forced to admit that Aaron confessed he killed Jackson. Chas feels bitter and worries about her son, while Aaron sits alone in his room, re-watching Jackson's video. Later, visiting Ashley at the church, Aaron gets angry as he questions Ashley over what he thinks about his actions and crumples in despair, feeling tormented.
Wed 27 July Aaron's mood is increasingly dark and when Steve arrives in the village and wishes him luck for the trial, it's clear he feels he doesn't deserve his best wishes. Once in the court room, Aaron is disinterested as the defence try to demonstrate his closeness with Jackson. When the prosecution try to suggest that Aaron didn't want to be burdened with Jackson, he inadvertently strikes a chord with the jury, suggesting he thinks about Jackson every single day.
As Paddy takes to the stand, he states that he'd be proud to be Aaron's dad but his confidence is shaken when he lets slip that Aaron once hit him and apologises later for potentially damaging his case. Chas, Paddy and Rhona worry about Aaron's state of mind when he questions whether he's done the right thing after all.
Thur 28 July The prosecution and defence sum up their cases for the jury and the judge asks them to go and consider the verdict.
Chas has a go at Lizzie outside the court as they wait to be called back in, but is hopeful when Lizzie shows her and Hazel support. Zak calls them back in as Aaron re-enters the court to await the verdict…
8pm Aaron is shell-shocked as the jury reach a verdict.
Fri 29 July Aaron breaks down - overwhelmed by guilt

A spoiler from fansite The Emmerdaily
As Aaron starts to unravel, he lashes out at those around him. As Aaron himself has said: "Anyone who gets close to me always ends up getting hurt!" So who is going to be the next to suffer as a result of his actions?
This was also posted as a teaser a little while back It's tin hats all round, when one man goes on the warpath and has run-ins with three different villagers and leaves another bruised and battered!

An interview with Stuart Blackburn on DS Here's what he has to say about the direction of Aaron's storyline After so many dark times, some viewers are keen to see happier material for Aaron. Will he ever head in a new direction?"It's going to be a long, long journey. What I cannot do and what would be unforgivable would be to take Aaron on this journey and then say, 'Oh, he's been a bit upset for a while, let's give it a month or two and then he'll be happy again'. He's got a long way to go. Ultimately over the coming months, there will be a degree of redemption for him, but he has a long battle ahead. "For Aaron, it's irrelevant what his friends, family and the courts say about what he's done - it's about what he feels. We need to keep that character real and true and we're committed to following it through. But all stories must have hope, and this one does. There's a lot of people on his side and it's perhaps time for Chas to step up to the plate as his mother. Aaron will be surrounded by love, but it'll take him a while to take that on board and deal with everything that's happened."
