Morangos Com Açúcar is a Portuguese youth soap opera. Series 7 of the show has a storyline dealing with Fabio's coming out. He starts out as very homophobic, but then comes to realize his feelings for Nuno. As I don't understand Portuguese, that is about all I can come up with as a description of the show. www.youtube.com/user/MorangoGay has their storyline posted. Unfortunately the vids are in Portuguese only -- no subtitles. If anyone who speaks Portuguese wants to take a stab at translating -- it would be greatly appreciated ;D ! Fabio has a decent singing voice -- as he sings several songs during the run of the show. The show seems to be kind of like Glee. |

Well i speak (more or less) portuguese, i remember watching this show some years ago (i live near to the border with Portugal) and they had a gay character (but no a gay storyline) some years ago, Pulga was the name of the guy if my memory doesn't fail.
They take some time in writing a gay storyline, but it's good to know they finally did it.
When i watched, the show was more or less like Al salir de clase, typical teen soap, with love storylines and some mystery or action in between. It's a pity that with the tdt i can't watch the portuguese channels anymore

Hi there! I'm portuguese and I could give it a go at translating the episodes (well, not now since I'm going on vacation for one week  . Morangos com Açúcar (Strawberries with Sugar) is one of my oldest nephew favourite shows and I sometimes watch it with him, not that I like it very much...  But since there's people interested, I'm willing to do it. It would take some time, though. The problem is that I wouldn't know how to download the clips from YT so I could subtitle them. So, can someone teach me how to do it? Cheers!  |

Looks interesting! However I do take caution at the final part, with a recap of the boys' relationship that doesn't seem to include any kissing?
Davian, if you use Firefox, then you can download the free add-on DownloadHelper. I don't know how the subtitling bit works though!

I have to admit, that I have not watched all of the clips due to the language barrier. I don't know if they actually kiss at any point. Though they do hold hands and the final part with the recap does show that their hug is rather intimate.
edited to add: Besides, does a kiss between the two have to be the threshold for what makes a gay couple gay enough to be worthy of consideration? Keep in mind, there are gay men who don't like to kiss. I'm not offended -- I just think that any portrayal of a gay relationship on television should be valued.

Well, the storyline is complete so i definitely give it a try. I remember well the show so i know what to expect.
The truth is that Fabio is the typical character of the show, short, cute and clueless. Watching his transition from narrow minded funny jerk to out and proud can be interesting
The show is really popular (or at least it was when i could watch it) and it's a real improvement the fact they had not only two gay characters but a couple of bisexual ones too. I hope they keep this tendency in new seasons

I'm not offended -- I just think that any portrayal of a gay relationship on television should be valued. It's not what makes them "gay enough", but rather the double standard in the treatment of gay couples versus straight ones which I find offensive. From what I can see, this show has not shied from heterosexual love scenes. There is even one of Fabio himself in bed with some girl! Any couple is worthy of consideration if they have bring the drama and have a believable relationship, but to me the latter aspect is closely intertwined with affectionate gestures between the two. Their chemistry, exchange of looks, touching, kissing ... all this is part and parcel of a believable relationship AFAIC. I also know many gay men who would not be comfortable kissing in public - I myself am one of them - but if they seriously expect us to believe horny gay teenagers are chastely holding hands and hugging while their straight peers are screwing from one bed to the next ... well, they have another thing coming! I do agree that hug was quite intimate and maybe I am judging prematurely since I don't know the timeline of this relationship. It just sounded a caution to me. It does not mean I am uninterested in this story. The boys are cute, the story sounds dramatic (homophobe accepting himself as gay) and the singing premise doesn't hurt. I will definitely be watching as long as there are English subtitles. |

Well, baby steps are necesary. I remember this show for the first four seasons, and even they were always sending positive messages of tolerance they didn't have any gay character. I remember the first gay character they had, and his coming out was low profile, and he never had a boyfriend.
I remember the first gay teen storylines in spain and you can count the kisses with the fingers of one hand. It's a question of progression.
I started watching the clips on 41 when Nuno appears. Fabio is one of the typical characters of the show, the good bad guy, he is quite annoying, and very homophobic (and you know he is not that bad after all), but funny and very over the top. His coming out begins near the end of the season so there are few oportunities that he gets some action, specially because all indicates that he won't be the type who accepts easily his homosexuality.
This is a teen show that is aired before evening, maybe next seasons they add more gay characters and the physical affection will be better (to be honest that's an aspect were a lot of soaps fail miserably)

About the subtitling of Morangos': Kevvoi suggested it and I guess that's what I'll do; instead of subtitling the videos, I'll make a transcription for each episode and post it here with a link to the clip.  I know I promised, but I'm pretty sure subtitling would take me ages to do and I wouldn't like to fail on you guys. José, una vez que hablas portugués, quizás podrías hacer los vídeos a partir de las trancripciones, qué te parece? I have almost finished the transcription for the first episode of Fábio's SL and I'll try to post it today (tomorrow I'll be flying to a germanophone country to practice what I've learnt all these years...  ). I'm really liking this story! As a Spanish speaker, I can understand about half of what is being said, which is just enough to follow along with the story. (I must say, I was very pleased to find out European Portuguese is much easier for me to follow than Brazilian Portuguese.) Looks interesting! However I do take caution at the final part, with a recap of the boys' relationship that doesn't seem to include any kissing? That's a shame to hear. As you said in your other comment, it's an unfortunate double standard for gay relationships. Especially considering the kissing/bed scene with Fábio and Carla (I think that's her name) and his TWO "forced" kisses with with a male friend in the earlier episodes. Sexy pictures of that kiss were even posted around the school! (See pt. 15 in the MorangoGay channel). Furthermore, the show hasn't shied away from dressing Fábio (and other male cast members) in drag on multiple occasions. So ultimately the lack of a kiss is almost as surprising as it is disappointing. That being said, Fábio is shown to be somewhat of a prude in the episodes I've seen (but possibly attributable to his closetedness). I'm diggin' the story/characters and I'll watch to the end, though, kiss or no kiss. |

The story has all the problems of a show that is new doing a gay teen storyline, it's obvious that they chicken to show their affection, and Fabio's realization of his feelings for Nuno happens with Nuno out of his life.
But with all the flaws i find the story (i started when Nuno appears for the first time) very entertaining, when you get used to Fabio's the over the top manners he ends being a very funny character character (the Tom i love you part is really funny). And when he start to have feelings for Nuno he became a enjoyable character, and i'm really liking the storyline.
Maybe next time the show try a gay storyline they correct the flaws and realize that a little physical affection won't kill the viewers (in fact most of them probably like it)

I was interested in Andre's story, but mostly just saw some songvids of Andre and Ruth.
In the early clips of the Fabio/Nuno story, Andre seems very flamboyant. That seemed toned down in some of the later clips.
Did Andre initially see himself as gay and then he met Ruth, or was he never gay and people just assumed he was because of his mannerisms (meanwhile Fabio wasn't flamboyant but was secretly gay)?

Portugal is changing in the right direction but the changes need time. I remember Al salir de clase gay storyline, there were protest an one of the character was cut till the end of the story, everytime they are going to kiss a phone ring or something happens. It's sad but this is very common specially in a show for teens and not in the prime time.
I find curious that nobody seems to have a problem with Fabio kissing Joao Pedro (two times) because that was a prank, but a romantic kiss irks some people.
As i say, it was a good first attemp, i find the storyline (with all it's flaws) very addictive

No, i think Andre an Fabio were in their last year on the youtube clips, but i saw the landlady and her weird boyfriend, some of the teachers, and Mariana too (i really like Mariana).
I think they are starting the summer episodes, usually in the summer appear new characters, some of them will be on next season, i wish they try a gay storyline again, in an arts school i won't be difficult to introduce a gay storyline

I don't know about Andre, but Fabio storyline is complete in morangogay youtube channel. I started watching when Nuno appears, and i'm on 63 part right now (there are 75) i'm trying to not end too fast

I'm sorry for not having translated any more of the "Morangos com Açúcar" episodes, but after my vacation my life went through a lot of big changes. I've been promoted at work (something I was looking forward to for a looong time...) which means I have been much more busy lately. But because of the whole crisis thing and Portugal's... erm... let's say 'fragile' situation, the salary isn't what I have been yearning and working for for the past years.  So I had to find a second job that gives me no time whatsoever to translate McA for you. At least for now. I'm sorry, hope you understand. Cheers, David |

Thanks for posting the link to this show. I've now watched through the entire run (I saw the first two dozen, skipped ahead to where Fabio and Nuno met, watched from there to the end, then filled in the missing bits).
I was absolutely entertained by the show, even though I couldn't understand what they were saying most of the time. That doesn't mean I couldn't tell what was going on, at times. Miguel Santiago, who played Fabio, has such an expressive face and voice. He did wonderfully at conveying the emotions Fabio was going through that I sometimes did not need to understand the dialogue to understand what he was going through. And his singing was darn fine, I do think. I wish we'd gotten to see more of his singing ability.

Thanks for translating the first episode, I sincerely appreciate it. It's a very musical language, and though I took Spanish in high school and can understand occasional pieces of dialogue, it's more likely that I don't understand what they're saying. I'm glad that there are people who are willing to help those of us who don't speak the language. I also want to say that I'm certainly not expecting you to do any translations. I certainly appreciate that you did, but you're doing it on a strictly voluntary basis, and understand that it's not necessarily a priority to get it done.
If there's anything I can do to help with the translation effort, let me know. I don't specifically know Portuguese, but I'm willing to read over translations, or put in some time translating to English using the admittedly-not-great Google Translate.
