This show's track record with gay characters isn't very good. A gay character/storyline is usually featured every season, but the storytelling is usually bad. I'm hoping that changes this time. Wait, who was the last gay character before Jack? I'm cautiously optimistic after watching the kiss today, but I am worried how they will handle the age gap between Jack and Alex if the characters ever get together. They should play that beat; while there's nothing illegal about them hooking up, there could be some interesting commentary about differing levels of maturity. It's definitely a potential area for them to screw up this story though! Alex's parents adopted Clementine who is a Sudanese refugee. Although the actress looks older I suspect she's meant to be in Kane and Jack's age group since she was introduced as Kane's girlfriend's best friend. At one time I thought she and Kane were destined to hook up but nothing ever came of it and since Honour left and Clementine traded in her barista job for hospital receptionist she and Kane hardly ever interact. If they did that could have been a potential way for Jack and Alex to cross paths. But I suppose they could easily repeat the same way Curtis and Dayna crossed paths today. Man, Curtis is a nasty piece of work but they're already working to redeem him with the whole "he's so frustrated by his helplessness at watching his little sister in pain" bit. Shame they show him being such a jerk to his other sibling and lying through his teeth including letting his mother go to prison for a crime he committed. On that note, my estimation of both the parents just went down. Margaret would rather go to prison and leave her terminally ill daughter to suffer without her mother, to protect her career criminal son? (And you know Curtis is going to commit more crime; you could just see it from the way his eyes lit up at Harry's $3 million home and Dayna co-owning the Ivy). And I thought they introduced Mo as a principled man in spite of his financial insecurity, but now we see him condoning his criminal son while failing to defend his younger son against homophobic bullying in his own home. I expect this is going to lead to Curtis gay-bashing Alex with Mo's support because Alex "led young Jack astray". I find it ironic that Kane's onscreen parents were both white although the actor's half-Maori, but Pixie's clearly white when one of her onscreen parents is Maori. |

I think this show is doing some really interesting hospital-based storylines. However, it falls flat everywhere else. The medical marijuana plot was going well until Victoria decided to mack on her patient's married father and reveal that's her reason for going along with it. Way to muddy the waters, show. Then there's putting Alex together with his violent ex - apparently physical abuse continues to be an amazing aphrodisiac for the gays. Kane has gotten his second love interest while Jack still has none. I hope they don't intend to draw some kind of parallel between Kane/Bobbie and Jack/Alex if the latter pairing ever materializes. The issue with Kane/Bobbie is not her age (the actors look roughly the same age) but her position of authority over him. Again, it's an interesting and controversial topic in theory since she's only 3 years older, Kane's over the age of consent and she's only a trainee teacher, but I have doubts they will do it justice.

So that's it for Kane. It's rather bizarre that they ran through his latest storyline so quickly and wrote him off just like that. He didn't even get a farewell scene with best friend Jack. Considering how involved he was in Jack's family it was really strange. Seemed like it was written hastily. What was the point of the hot-for-teacher plot if it didn't even get KJ Apa out of his shirt?
I wonder what's next for Jack, or will he follow Kane off the show?

Edwin and Jack are supposed to be about the same age, I think. I did think it was kind of silly how Jack revealed his feelings for Edwin without a clue Edwin might be gay, especially after what happened with Kane. But it's obvious Edwin likes Jack. I'm going to guess Edwin doesn't think a 'hunky' jock would be into a math nerd like him. But they'll work it out, for a second or two anyway.
