Soap Opera Digest: Sami and Rafe Renew their Vows

Since Sami and Rafe were unable to reserve the church for their Christmas Eve vow renewal ceremony, the couple moves it to the HTS. "When the topic of renewing vows was first brought up by Sami, Rafe didn't understand why she wanted to do it when they have only been married a little over a year," shares Galen Gering (RAFE). "But Rafe is a romantic at heart, the more he thought about it, the more he got into, Rafe decided it was a good thing to do. He didn't linger on why Sami wanted to renew their wedding vows. Instead, he simply being present in the moment and enjoying it."

Things are going well-until Will brings Marlena as his guest. When Sami spies them shortly before the ceremony is about to begin, she demands that her mother leave, but Will pressures Sami into letting his Grandma stay. The sitution escalates when Ej appears, and Will is steamed watching Sami interact with her ex-hubby. Fortunately, Rafe arrives plays peacemaker between Sami and Will, though Will's anger problems do not go unnoticed.

"Rafe was a teenager himself," Gering reminds, "And he went through a troublesome time when he was younger. So he thinks part of what Will is going through is teen angst. Sami has also been super busy with work and it's the holiday season. Will is an emotional guy. Obviously, Rafe is worried about what is going on with Will, but he doesn't know exactly what it is. Rafe understands that Will and his siblings have been throught a lot in the last few weeks, especially with Johnny's disappearance. That could be also be weighing on Will."

The ceremony begins and Abe officiates. Sami and Rafe exchange vows and share a tender kiss, while she tries to keep her guilty feelings at bay. "It's a key moment for Rafe and Sami," notes Gering, "In Rafes mind it reaffirms his love for Sami, and the belief that he has found his soulmate. It's a symbolic reminder that this is the woman that he wants to spend the rest of his life with."

Sami and Rafe prepare for their Christmas Eve vow renewal in Horton Town Square. Sami orders Marlena to leave, but Will insists that his grandmother stay. Rafe walks in on the commotion. "Rafe understands that Will has been going through a lot," asserts Gering. "Sami has been super-busy with her job and it's the holiday time. Not that much time has passed since Johnny disappeared, so there are a lot of reasons why Will could have his own troubles. Rafe wants to be there for him." Rafe brokers a peace deal and Sami agrees to have Marlena remain as Will's guest.

Abe officiates the ceremony and Sami and Rafe renew their vows. "It's a key moment for Rafe and Sami," explains Gering. "In Rafe's mind, it re-affirms his love for Sami and his belief that he has found his soulmate." Unbenknownst to him, his soulmate is wracked with guilt over her sexcapade with EJ.

After Sami and Rafe renew their vows, Will visits Marlena. "Ever since Marlena came back to Salem, there has been a strong bond between her and Will." Notes Chandler Massey (Will) "She gives Will love unconditionally, without asking for anything in return. She is basically the only person in Will's life who has done that for him. He really respects her and loves her more than anything in the world."

Marlena senses that something is troubling Will and she gently tries to draw him out. "Will trusts her more than anyone else especially his mom," asserts Massey. Will starts to unburden himself, but at the last moment, he pulls back, then says he is upset about his breakup with Gabi and problems at home. Marlena asks Will to consider moving in with her and John.

On New Year's Eve, Melanie and Sonny stop by the loft to pick up Will. A concerned Sami pulls Melanie aside and questions her and Will's dark mood. Melanie attributes it to his romance with Gabi ending. Next, Sami tries to make amends with Will, but he brushes her off.

At the celebration in Horton Town Square, Will watches the closeness between Sonny and his friend Tyler, who are both very at ease with being openly gay. Unable to handle it, Will flees the celebration. "Will is still very much in turmoil and still conflicted within himself, " explains Massey. "He is still dealing with the secret that he has to keep about his mother."

Will returns to one of the places where he feels safe, his grandmother's home. She senses that Will needs to talk. "Its absolutely vital that Will talk to someone." observes Massey. Without warning, Will blurts that he saw Sami and EJ having sex.

"This is something that has been weighing on Will," voices Massey. "It has disgusted him. He feels like his mother has betrayed his family. Harboring feelings like that, and not being able to tell anyone can do terrible things to a person. Will's emotions have reached a boiling point because he is angry about the whole vow renewal ceremony, and the way his mother is treating Rafe. Will has to say something or he would have exploded with rage."

He gives her a big hug. Marlena asks what he's doing here. Isn't he supposed to be at Sami's vow renewal event. He's going but he came to get her. Marlena would like to but she wasn't invited and she doesn't want to go when it feels like crashing the party. Will is officially inviting her. I want you to be there. I don't care what my mom thinks. Marlena is touched by his invite but she doesn't want to ruin Sami's special time. Will tells her that Johnny, Allie and Syndey and he want her there. It's Christmas Eve. You should be hanging out with your family not sitting on the couch crying over an old photo album. If you're not going, I won't go. Marlena says he's stubborn - you're just like your mother. Will snaps - No I'm not. I'm nothing like her.

HTS - Part 2: Will and Marlena arrive. She asks if they'll see Gabi here tonight. No, she's spending Christmas with her mother. Marlena asks how he's doing. He's great; he's over it. Marlena asks if he's forgotten that she's a psychiatrist. Let's try this again. How are you doing? Will thought that he and Gabi could make it work. But I guess I loved the idea of us more than I loved her. Marlena - That shows a lot of insight. I'm proud of you. Will has had a lot of time to think lately. I've been having these feelings for a while and I can't get rid of them. I've tried but I can't. Marlena - What kind of feelings? Will says now is not a great time to talk about this - let's go find the family. They walk away and EJ comes out of hiding after eavesdropping. He has a puzzled look on his face.

Allie and Johnny run to Marlena as soon as they see her. Sami asks Will what she's doing here. Will - She's my plus 1. Sami tells him he should have asked her. Austin decides to take the kids for some hot cocoa. After they're gone Sami looks at Marlena - I didn't want to have to say this. This is a really special night for Rafe and me and I didn't want anything or anyone to ruin it. I didn't ask you to come because I don't want you here and I would like for you to leave. Will - I want to ask you a question Mom. What the hell is wrong with you? She is your mother! Sami - And I'm your mother and you don't speak to me that way. Marlena knows Sami is upset with her but please don't take it out on Will. Sami - Yes I am upset with you. I can't even look at you right now. Marlena wishes her luck and tells her she looks stunning. Sami starts walking away but Will calls out to her. You said you wanted to do this on Christmas Eve in front of God and your family. I'm not sure who you're talking about. He turns to Marlena. Okay, if you leave, I leave. Come on. They start walking away so Sami asks them to wait. I didn't realize how important this was to Will. It obviously means a lot to him so it's okay with me if you stay. Please don't make me regret this. Marlena - I never would.

HTS - Part 3: Johnny asks his Daddy if he's coming to Mommy's wedding tonight. EJ says no, it's just for family. Johnny - But you're family. EJ says they have some presents for him - maybe you'd like to open them if it's okay with you - he looks at Sami. She says yeah, just don't go far. Sami goes over to Will. Will - You really should let EJ stay for the wedding. After all you two get along so well together lately. Sami - Don't be ridiculous. What are you talking about? Will - Last time I checked, I wasn't the one renewing my vows after only one year. Although for you, maybe that's a record. Actually I think it is because this is your 5th marriage and don't get me wrong because Rafe is one of my faves but sooner or later he will figure out who you are. I did. Sami wants him to talk to her - Please tell me where this is coming from. Will - You want to know? You do? Okay? Fine, I will tell you and I will tell everyone here. I'll do it right now.

Will tells Sami - It bothers me that you think that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want and you don't care about the people it affects. I'm not going to let you do that anymore Mom. I'm not going to let you hurt more innocent people. Sami - I don't know what you're talking about. Will - You know exactly what I'm talking about. What you did when Johnny ... Rafe comes up to them - Are you fighting again? Will wipes his tears - No, I'm just talking about how she doesn't deserve you. Rafe - I love your mother. She's the best thing that ever happened to me. It's the holidays. It's Christmas. We're family. Can we love each other here? Will walks away. Sami is really glad he's here; she didn't think he was going to make it. Rafe wouldn't miss this for the world. Sami asks what happened at work. Rafe - That's something I need to talk to you about.

The young man pays a visit to Marlena, who instantly realizes he's troubled. She tries to get Will to open up, but he covers that he's still shaken by his breakup with Gabi. Marlena, who is keenly aware that things are tense between Will and Sami, asks him to consider moving in with her and John.

On New Year's Eve, Will overhears Sami and Rafe in a heated discussion. "Will doesn't like the way that Sami is treating Rafe," asserts Massey. "He was disgusted by the wedding vow renewal ceremony and feels like his mother has betrayed the family because of what happened between her and EJ."

Sami worries that her son might know that she had sex with EJ. When Melanie and Sonny stop by to see Will, Sami takes Melanie aside and questions her about Will. Melanie says that Will is still hurting over losing Gabi. Sami is relieved and tries to make peace with her son, but he brushes her off.

That night, Will suprises Marlena with another visit. "She is the only person that Will feels comfortable around," states Massey. "When he's with Marlena, it's the only time that he doesn't have this wall of anger and sarcasm up around him." Will blurts to Marlena that he saw Sam and EJ having sex. She's stunned by the news.

"Will's emotions were at a boiling point," notes Massey. "It's was doing terrible things to him and finally, he had to say something."

But leaving Salem will cost money-and Will thinks he's found his cash cow in the form of EJ. Will drops the bombshell on his former step dad that he knows EJ and Sami had sex. "Will also knows that EJ is with Nicole," adds Massey. "Since EJ obviously has money, and Will has this dirt on EJ, Will thinks he can blackmail EJ."

A crafty EJ takes a moment to consider Will's position. "Will isn't thinking rationally," offers Massey. "Anyone who is thinking logically wouldn't blackmail a DiMera".

Sami is stunned to see Will holding keys to a new car given to him by EJ, then discovers that her son is now working for her ex. "Will doesn't really have much of a choice where EJ is concerned," notes Chandler Massey (Will). "But this is another way for him to punish his mother without exposing her secret."

Sami has a private moment with Will and tries to reason with him that working for EJ is a bad idea. To Sami's frustration, Will refuses to listen. "Will is starting to realize that there are definite advantages to working with EJ," says Massey.

Marlena is equally appalled to hear about her grandson's new job. "There is no question in Marlena's mind that the DiMeras are dangerous," points out Deidre Hall (Marlena). "In any capacity her loved ones have gotten involved with the DiMeras, it has only brought trouble."

Marlena runs into Sami and questions why she is allowing Will to get mixed up with the DiMeras. Marlena urges Sami to act more like a mother to Will and provide him with much-needed guidance. Sami bristles and charges that Marlena has no right advising her on how to be a mother when she did such a rotten job herself. Sami then storms off.

Later, Marlena questions Will about the new job and asks what is really behind it. Will breaks down and confesses that he wants to hurt Sami. "In Will's mind, this is the only way he can get back at his mother for what she did," Massey explains. Adds Hall, "Marlena adores Will but it also triggers the memory of what happened when Sami walked in on Marlena and John making love on the conference room table. Marlena has a multi-layered response. There is also the horror of knowing what her daughter went through. It was deeply emotional."

Soon after, Marlena takes matters into her own hands and confronts EJ. "Marlena is fiercely protective of her family," voices Hall. EJ refuses to be intimidated by Doc Evans. Hall previews, "Marlena tells EJ, 'You won't like what will happen if you mess with my grandson".

The week begins with Nicole cornering Will about his unusual alliance with EJ. "Nicole is trying to get the bottom of their relationship because she doesn't want it to ruin everything she and EJ have been trying to build working together on his campaign," asserts Ari Zucker (Nicole). "She just wants to be in the know and make sure that EJ doesn't mess up their ultimate goal, which to get him elected mayor." A crafty Will, however, succeeds in evading Nicole's questions and quickly slips away.

Later, Nicole confronts Ej directly and demands to know what's really going on. Ej breaks his promise to Will and reveals that he has been blackmailing his former stepson with the information that Will-not Lucas-shot him at the alter in 2007 when EJ wed Sami. Despite Ej's openness, Nicole suspects there is something bigger at play. "Nicole doesn't care what Will did," states Zucker.

But when Will discovers that EJ has exposed his secret to Nicole, he cares plenty! Upset by EJ's betrayal, Will threatens to tell Nicole about EJ's sexual encounter with Sami. Ultimately, EJ pacifies Will by stricking a new deal with him.

Meanwhile, Nicole pushes EJ to come clean about what's actually going on. "This really isn't about what Ej is doing with Will," Zucker points out. "EJ isnt' being honest with Nicole, period. It's Nicole's biggest issue with EJ, getting him to tell the truth." Ej, however, refuses divulge anything more. "Ej tells Nicole that there will always be parts of what he does for a living and things that have to do with his life that he will not share with her," says his portrayer, James Scott.

But Nicole isn't going to let it go so easily. "If there is something going on between Ej and Stefano, Nicole gets it," voices Zucker. "But Will? It's like, 'Who is this kid?' it leaves a bitter taste in her mouth."

Will learns that Rafe has moved out and lays into his mother. "Will sees it as the ultimate hypocrisy," declares Chandler Massey. "Sami is hiding the fact that she slept with another man and then walks in on Rafe kissing another woman and kicks him out of his place. What Rafe did is nothing compared to what Sami did. Any logical person would think there was something wrong with how she's acting."

But Sami doesn't see it the same way. "She knows exactly what Will is going through because she went through the same thing," Sweeney observes. "He is just not even trying to understand what she's been through or what her perspective of it is. She really does feel like it was this crazy thing and she literally was insane from the grief over thinking she was losing Johnny. She really feels that's what happened and that he should understand that, but he doesn't. Her heart breaks for him. She loves him so much and she hates that he has been mad at her and blaming her for and that, whatever else he's going through, he can't confide in her and she can't be there for him because of what she's done. That is one instance in which she does feel very guilty and is very aware of what her infidelity with EJ caused her."

By week's end, a frustrated Will seem poised to tell Rafe the truth about Sami and EJ.
