Yep, Rafe was finally on today, after a month's absence. I agree with those who have complained about the big hype and then...the character disappears for a month! At the very least, as a friend of Lily's, he could've been at the Lily/Cane wedding; and as a friend of Billy's, couldn't he have talked to Billy when the whole Sharon's baby/Chloe leaving Billy stuff was going on? Missed opportunities to remind viewers who Rafe is.
Also, it seems that OLTL has sprung their news about the Fish/Kyle storyline just as the storyline is about to kick off, which is much more satisfying.
As to the question of characters not being related to core families: this doesn't bother me too much, because if the characters become popular enough--and that could very well happen with Fish/Kyle on OLTL--they will surely stick around, and could conceivably be written to have some connection to a core family at a later date.

I'm not able to see embedded videos; is it possible to link to the clips of Fish/Kyle that are embedded above? Thanks! Why not just double click on it and you can see it on Youtube instead? Because there's nothing there but a blank screen so I can't double-click anything.

A new interview with Yani Gellman (Rafe) conducted by The Advocate's Michael Fairman; Yani doesn't discuss the Chris Engen scandal and gives few hints about what will happen with his character, but his enthusiasm for the role and the story is wonderful: www.advocate.com/exclusive_detail_ektid87810.asp

Well, speaking as someone who watches Y&R on a regular basis, I have to say that even though the gay storyline(s) haven't yet begun, the show itself is creatively on fire: just this week, the scenes where Phyllis discovered Sharon could be pregnant with Nick's baby, then Jack discovering that Sharon's baby could also (!) be his brother Billy's child...it was absolutely gripping. Who knew that the old chestnut of "who's the daddy?" could be so gripping all over again?

Just to get my head roung it - so Adam is only pretending to be blind Yes. It was assumed for months that he really WAS going blind, but you'll recall the clip where Adam dropped a box when Rafe entered, Rafe picked it up and Adam snatched it from him? The box contains hypodermic needles with which Adam has been injecting Botox into his eyes to create the effects of blindness and thus convince any doctors that he really is blind.

jjose, I'll try to fill you in as much as I can:
Now, as you know, Rafe Torres is a public defender who also has experience in family law; we saw his parents briefly during his first episode and we know that his Aunt Estella is/was the Newman family housekeeper; also, Rafe went to college with Billy Abbott (see below), who defended him at school when others bullied him.
Victor Newman is the wealthiest and most powerful man in Genoa City, with his company Newman Enterprises. Victor has been married several times and has four children:
Nick Newman, just promoted to COO of Newman Enterprises; Nick is currently married to Phyllis Summers (chief editor of Restless Style magazine, one of Newman Enterprises companies), but still carries a torch for his previous wife, Sharon Collins, who's currently pregnant, but isn't sure whether the father is Nick, Jack Abbott or Billy Abbott; Nick's mother is Nikki Reed.
Victoria Newman is acting Chairman of the Board of Newman Enterprises, and her mother is also Nikki Reed; Victoria is married to J.T. Hellstrom.
Adam Wilson is the result of a relationship Victor had with Hope Wilson while hiding out in Kansas many years ago; Hope was blind and when Victor tried to bring her back to Genoa City, she felt slighted by his friends and family and decided to return to Kansas, where she raised Adam; since Adam's arrival in Genoa City, he has grown increasingly sociopathic for unknown reasons.
Abby Newman is the teenage daughter of Victor and Ashley Abbott; Ashley is currently living with Victor at his ranch and is pregnant with his child; it is Ashley that Adam is tormenting, though he reason for doing this is unknown.
Billy Abbot is Rafe's friend from college and went to him for advice when he was facing a potential custody battle: Billy's current wife, Chloe Mitchell, was pregnant, but wasn't sure whether the father was Billy or his (presumed) brother Cane Ashby (see below); DNA tests were inconclusive, but Billy married Chloe; though he's devoted to their daughter, Delia, his relationship with Chloe is filled with strife, especially now that his former flame, Mackenzie Browning (aka Mac), has returned to Genoa City; most recently, we have discovered that Mac had an affair with Raul Guiterriez while working with an organization in Darfur.
Neil Winters is the former COO of Newman Enterprises who recently resigned from his position there and took a CEO position with Chancellor Industries, which is owned by Katherine Chancellor, Mackenzie's grandmother; Rafe represented Neil in a custody battle with Tyra Hamilton over the young Ana; Neil's daughter Lily Winters recently married Cane Ashby; Neil's sister, Olivia Winters, is Ashley's doctor.
Ok, now the following part is going to be confusing, but it may play a major role in Rafe's upcoming storyline:
30 years ago, Jill Foster had an affair with Phillip Chancellor II, the husband of the then-alcoholic Katherine Chancellor; the result of the affair was Phillip Chancellor III; but Phillip II died in a car accident and Katherine did everything in her power to prevent Jill from getting her hands on the Chancellor fortune; Jill eventually married John Abbott, the result being their son Billy Abbott (mentioned above); Phillip III, as a teenager, was eventually accepted by Katherine, but both Katherine and Jill were opposed to his relationship with Nina Webster, who had recently had her first-born son stolen from her by Rose Devill, whose speciality was conning young, penniless pregnant women and stealing their children and selling them on the black market (Nina's first-born has never been found).
Anyway, Nina and Phillip had sex; Nina got pregnant and over Jill and Katherine's protestations, Phillip married Nina; however, shortly after their son, Phillip Chancellor IV, was born, Phillip III got drunk and died in a car accident.
A couple of years later, it was discovered that Katherine was actually Jill's mother, but later DNA results have negated that; their relationship remains stormy.
A few years ago, however, Katherine started to be haunted by dreams of a baby crying; after seeing a psychic and talking with an old friend, realized that in a drunken haze and overwhelmed by her hatred of Jill, she had switched Jill's baby by Phillip II with a strangers baby; it was then discovered that Cane Ashby was the child who had been switched--he'd grown up in Australia. There were some questional behavior initially by Cane, indicating that he was part of con job, but nothing came of that...until recently, when it was revealed that a phone call Cane made about a year or so ago to a shady person turned out to be a call to...Phillip Cancellor III...or at least somebody who looks exactly like him (it's the same actor, returning to show).
Some other characters: Rafe revealed his sexuality to Colleen Carlton, the daughter of the late Brad Carlton and Traci Abbott (Ashley's sister); Colleen has taken a seat on the board of Newman Enterprises, something which displeases Victor and he has asked J.T. to find out what she's up to; Colleen, in fact, is revealing information to her uncle, Jack Abbott, who hates Victor.
Then there's the Baldwin-Fisher clan, but so far they don't have much to do with Rafe's storyline; if they do, I'll provide further info on them.
Hope this helps!

Nelson's Suds Report has further details about Chris Engen's sudden departure as Adam (one unnamed co-star says Chris clearly had some personal issues he was going through, while another says this is the kiss of death for him in Hollywood--you don't walk out on a contract in the middle of story that other soap actors would love to have), also, spoilers:
Cast members assume that Adam isn't gay, but having an affair with Rafe to keep him quiet about Adam's gaslighting of Ashley; I'd have to imagine that Adam is REALLY good in bed for Rafe to forgive Adam for framing his Aunt Estella!

Personally, I think this has the potential for a terrific storyline and I've been rooting for and Adam/Rafe pairing for awhile: Rafe is such a pure, good person that to pair him up with another pure, good person would be rather boring; Adam is such a scheming, conniving, evil character that putting them opposite each other will make for some incredible fireworks. I SO cannot wait to see this play out.

Some insider gossip, from somebody-in-the-know at Daytime Royalty, regarding Rafe and any other potential gay guys in Genoa City:
"I can assure you this story is much more complicated and complex than you guys can imagine. Well, maybe not. LOL! But it's good. Remember — [headwriters] Maria [Arena Bell] and Hogan [Sheffer] are all about bait and switch. Maybe there are four gay people in Genoa City. Maybe three. Maybe six. Wait until this summer. If you're not watching Y&R, start watching now. Especially if you're a fan of gay stories."

A backtrack:
The We Love Soaps blog, which stated that CBS Soaps In Depth was "confirming" the story, has been edited to say it is just the magazine's "speculation" of a Rafe/Phillip pairing. I still hope it's true, tho!

Spoiler/Rumor about Rafe's love interest:
Somebody over at the SoapCentral Y&R forum claims a studio insider reveals that Rafe's love interest will be the returning Phillip Chancellor IV (the newly cast John Driscoll, ex-Coop, Guiding Light). Because of this source, I can't confirm, and there's no official word yet, so file it under "rumor" as of yet.
If you're wondering who Phillip Chancellor IV is: the son of the late Phillip Chancellor III (played in the 80s by gay actor Thom Bierdz) and Nina Webster; Phillip III was the son of Jill Foster and Phillip Chancellor II; Phillip III died in an automobile accident after marrying Nina; a few years ago, however, it was revealed that Katherine Chancellor--Phillip II's stepmother, who hated Jill--had switched the babies; Phillip III's body was exhumed and DNA tests proved that he was not Jill's son; Jill tracked down her real son, Cane Ashby, who's now a major character in Genoa City; meanwhile, Nina managed to retain her relationship with Katherine (she was recently at Katherine's wedding); Phillip IV is currently in the military and serving in Iraq--he's scheduled to return sometime in June.

Can somebody explain to me what the chipmunk story is? In a, er, nutshell: as a child, Kevin Fisher was humiliated and abused by his father, who would throw him in a closet; as a result, he developed claustrophobia; flash forward to recently, Kevin goes searching for the missing Katherine Chancellor and is kidnapped by villainous Clint, who drugged him and locked him up in a closet, making Kevin think that Clint was his abusive father; realizing this, Clint forced Kevin to participate in bank robberies, wearing a chipmunk mask; Clint had a heart attack and Kevin hid him in the closet; Amber found Kevin who, in a delusional state, forced her to help him rob more banks; they were eventually captured and, despite his family's protests (knowing Kevin's childhood traumas), Kevin was locked up in a padded cell, where he became mostly catatonic, with visions of a large chipmunk teasing and taunting him; finally, when he was placed in a strait-jacket, Kevin went totally catatonic and had an internal fight with the chipmunk--eventually, he knocked the head of the chipmunk off to reveal...Kevin himself, who told the catatonic Kevin it was time to return to the real world.

Personally, I thought the Chipmunk storyline was absolutely gripping. Kevin's breakdown--due to his childhood traumas, and enhanced by his kidnapping--allowed for the development of the Chipmunk to emerge organically from the story. Believe it or not, as presented on the show, it was for more realistic than many prime time shows or even movies, and much more affecting.
Of course, Rafe exists partially due to the success of Luke and Noah. We have to give ATWT props for creating those characters and forging ahead. But I've given up on ATWT due to the ridiculous, plot-driven storylines.
Y&R is a character-based soap, so Rafe's development will be gradual, natural. I found his coming out to be refreshing, mostly because I'm an older gay man and that's how it is for me now. In this case, I can actually relate more to a character like Rafe than I can to Luke and Noah.
I'm confident that Y&R IS going to do something with Rafe; of course, it would be nice if that includes a romance, but even if it doesn't, just knowing that there's a confident, out gay man on the canvas is important. And as the audience grows to like and admire Rafe, perhaps that will give TPTB that courage to develop a romance for him.

I LOVED today's scene in how it wasn't a big deal and a non-event. According to Nelson in today's Suds Report, he's supposed to be getting a story that will unfold in the upcoming months. I'm excited. I agree, I love how the show just treated it matter-of-factly and neither Colleen nor JT (the only two who apparently know already, though I wonder if Billy knows, since he's a longtime friend of Rafe's) had a pretty-much non-issue reaction. And, yeah, Nelson says Rafe is bumping up from recurring to supporting, so I'm really looking forward to where the story is going. As for Phyllis, meh, she's ok. I much prefer The Chipmunk.

Um, I searched around and didn't find any listing for this (which surprised me a bit), but I wonder if y'all are aware that the American soap opera The Young & the Restless will be introducing a gay character, or, rather, outing a character (or two, more below): Rafe Torres (played by Yanni Gellman), who's been a recurring character since November of last year, is a pro-bono lawyer/public defender, as well as the nephew of Estella, Victor Newman's housekeeper.
Reportedly, this week or next, Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) will attempt to play matchmaker and hook Rafe up with her friend Colleen (Tammin Sursok), when he reveals that he is gay.
Now, according to the rumors circulating, Rafe may not be the only gay man in Genoa City: indicators say that Rafe's outing will lead, within a month, to the outing of a more prominent character, with heavy betting that it may be Adam Wilson (Chris Engen), Victor Newman's son, or the soon-to-be re-introduced Phillip Chancellor IV (casting not yet announced).
Anyway, I wanted to share this with y'all, as I'm very excited and hopeful that Y&R can do a good story with this--right now, the show is on fire creatively, and I'm hopeful that we'll get something good from it.
(If I've broken any rules about spoilers or such, please let me know.)

OMG - Fabian just spilled all the beans and Axel's really 'protective' over Christian's love life. What's up with that? Such drama! I can't understand German, but I think I got the "Judith isn't Christian's girlfriend, she's MY girlfriend!" ;D Yep, I actually understood two German sentences for the first time! Woohoo!
