The first new A24 project to emerge since the studio’s record-breaking Oscar haul last week is international TV series Young Mungo, which is being adapted by Scottish-American author Douglas Stuart from his acclaimed novel.
The series, about the dangerous first love of two working class men in Glasgow, is being shepherded by A24’s international heads Piers Wenger and Rose Garnett, and marks a coup for the pair given the stellar reviews and buzz around its author.
Published last year, Young Mungo is the second novel from Stuart after Booker prize-winner Shuggie Bain, which Euphoria and Everything Everywhere All At Once producer A24 is currently making into a series with the BBC. A broadcaster has yet to be set on Young Mungo.

I didn't read Young Mungo yet (it was published here a couple of months ago) but Shuggie Bain is pretty good.

Transatlantic, a Netflix limited series starring out actor Cory Michael Smith as Varian Fry, the real-life hero who helped found the Emergency Rescue Committee to help those persecuted by the Nazis flee the German Reich. The 7-episode series is based on a historical fiction novel by Julie Orringer, The Flight Portfolio, which received criticism from some historians for depicting Fry, who was twice married to women and fathered three children, as secretly queer. Fry's own son believes he was gay. The trailer indicates that the show will go with that interpretation.

Glad to see Cory Michael Smith again, and him playing gay this time. Also, he came out a while ago as not straight, so I'm glad we have a queer actor playing a queer character.

Don't think they deserve their own thread, but given it's pretty rare for Slovakia and Czechia, let me at least put it here: New show from Slovakia called 'Iveta'. It has a main gay character - he's a stylist. There are some other side gay characters. Given it's Slovakia, I won't comment on how stereotypical and borderline mocking some of the scenes are, but I guess it's still a progress. The show was surprisingly popular according to viewership, it was renewed for S2, which is rare. There's another show currently airing in Czechia called 'Sex O'Clock'. There are some actors from Slovakia as well. Focused on this family, each family member has a prominent storyline. The dad comes out as gay in Episode 1 and reveals he has a boyfriend. We're on Episode 3 so far and I think they're handling it respectfully.

Just a heads up: The second season of the Argentine telenovela "Argentina, Tierra de Amor y Venganza" (ATAV2) premieres on Monday. The gay storyline looks good.
The actors talk about their characters:

It sounds like bona fide gay content is coming to the Bridgerton universe - but not the main show, its prequel, Queen Charlotte, a limited-run (6 episodes) prequel that debuts next Thursday, May 4th.
From Vulture's review:
I suspect it involves two courtiers young Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) and Reynolds (Freddie Dennis).

Typical... they don't have the balls to add a gay character to the original show, so they create a limited spin-off. Sorry, that doesn't cut it for me.

I am going to take a wait-and-see approach, but I agree the optics are not good. ETA: Assuming it is the character of young Brimsley who is queer, he does appear as an older man in the main show but he is a C-tier character at best (supporting to a supporting).

There's a Danish miniseries starting soon that will have a gay story. I tried to google it, but couldn't find it. I saw it on twitter, and I liked the tweet, but now I can't find it, ugh. I'll try to update this post when I find out the name.

Looks like some potential for a gay storyline featuring Mauricio Henao (one of my longtime crushes!) in the upcoming Spanish-language Netflix drama Perfil falso (Fake Profile), out on May 31.

Looks like the main villain is bisexual. Hope it not just a few secs and they give this a good storyline. Oh it looks a different actor. Not sure cannot make out the 3 men on the clip

While next month's miniseries sequel to The Full Monty won't feature, well, the full monty, it will feature a married gay couple - presumably Lomper and Guy from the original, although I'm not sure how this will work since Hugo Speer, who played Guy, was fired early during filming for inappropriate conduct towards a female crew member. Perhaps the role was recast. From The Guardian's interview of the showrunners: www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/may/19/full-monty-disney-plus-simon-beaufoy-alice-nutter

It is definitely this year, based on the press. If I were to guess, I'd say late autumn. Since the US TV industry is basically shut down due to the writers' strike, this is the probable impact on all the shows with a queer male principal protagonist. (Note: excludes many more shows with gay/bi male regulars, who are not one of the leads.) Premiere date set:- Heartstoppers S2 (Netflix) Post-production, awaiting a premiere date:- Glamorous (Netflix) - Fellow Travelers (Showtime) - Our Flag Means Death S2 (HBO Max) - Ripley (Netflix - originally commissioned for Showtime) - Elite S7 (Netflix Spain) - Mary & George (Sky/AMC) Mid-production:- Chucky S3 (Syfy/USA) - began filming in April, likely to be affected by the strike - Interview with the Vampire S2 (AMC) - began filming in April, likely to be affected by the strike - Wreck S2 (BBC) - began filming in April, likely unaffected by the strike as it's a British production - Big Boys S2 (Channel 4) - began filming in May, likely unaffected by the strike as it's a British production - Young Royals S3 (Netflix Nordic) - began filming in April, likely unaffected by the strike as it's a Swedish production Pre-production, affected by strike:- The Corps (Netflix) - Uncoupled S2 (Showtime - originally Netflix) - supposed to begin filming at the end of May Status unclear:- The Deviant's War (Amazon) - Overcompensating (Amazon) - They Both Die at the End (Netflix) - Young Mungo (BBC) That's all I can think of at the moment - have I missed anything out? With this list, you can clearly see how Netflix is far and away the leader of the pack. It's also evident that Disney (including Hulu) has quietly succumbed to rightwing pressure and gutted every last bit of gay-led programming from all its platforms, while the rightwing takeover of Warner-Discovery has left season 2 of Our Flag Means Death as the sole gay-led production on its slate.

But preview for next episode shows the gay character kissing his friend's boyfriend for a split second. Looks like the boyfriend is shocked a bit and is not kissing the gay character back. Once again, it's only a split second so that could of course change.

They had the spin the bottle scene which Omar the BF left and did not want to kiss Luca. On preview we see Omar waking up in bed with just underwear on and the kiss on preview seems to be same room. From how show has gone I don't see Luca getting another romance option unless they go the Omar is bi route for drama as it causes division between Luca and Andrea his best friend.

Just finished the episode. Lesbians had a whole make-out session and sex scene. As for the gays, Luca kissed Omar (literally just a peck) and it faded to black. Yeah, they can keep it. Not gonna continue.

Wonder if False Profile on Netflix Wednesday will be bait?
