" But you know what? Playing Rock Band doesn't make someone a real rock star. It’s not the same thing as being a professional musician. " I don't believe any of us have ever claimed to be professional authors? because yeah, writing fanfiction doesn't make us professional authors but what it does make us is creative and I for one support anything that gives a person the oppertunity to express themselves through any type of creative outlet. Also, I do believe it can be seen as art and not to sound egotistical here but I've been studying and practicing Art history and Fine Art for the past six years so I'm almost certain I know what I'm talking about when I say that nobody can ever really dictate art - I believe that if you create something, no matter what it is, and you yourself believe it to be art then that's what it is, it's art because who'd know better than the creator themselves? Take Marcell Duchamp for instance and his art work 'Fountain', it is classed as a piece of ready made art because let's face it - it was a urinal, not a fountain and he himself did not craft the object BUT through his own creative vision and explanations he managed to take something that was already there and turn it into something completely different and no, it didn't make sense, it was absolutly insane but it was art and it is now one of the most famous pieces of art in history! The same applies for fanfiction, so what if we're taking characters that have already been built up for us? where's the harm? - if Duchamp can take a urinal and turn it into something as great as he did, something that has been referenced as "a major landmark in 20th century art." then why can't we do the same for fanfiction? Art is what we make it - remember that guys! Love you all xoxo

OK I saw Zam's post and followed the link. The original article by Brent Hartinger replying to a reader's question begins ....Also, JKP, keep in mind you’re talking to a published novelist here Get down off your pedestal and I might take the time to respond to your pretentious article until then: Is fanfiction art? Who cares!

I should have added a sweeping generalisation to my original post:
All reading of fiction is a form of escapism. If fanfiction pushes your buttons (as it does mine) and gives you pleasure then who is Brent Hartinger to gainsay that.
Published author my ar*e! I've never read any of his work (though I see it is available on Amazon).
