The old man seemed lost in thought because he ignored Christian's reaction, his eyes stared through him as if watching something no one else could see. And he smiled to himself and gave a little shake of his head, a barely noticeable rueful shrug of his shoulders. Then he peered once more at Christian, his eyes frank with annoying assessment.
By then, Christian had rallied, "Mr. Miller, you don't even know me. You have no idea what you're talking about.", he said, his voice again in control. Luckily, Olli was already paying for his items, almost ready to depart. Mrs. Miller was ringing up the sales slowly, taking the opportunity to chat with much smiling and nodding. He shifted irritably in the chair, anxious to be gone.
"Come now, what else could it be? When I see a young man writhing in the throes of such passion, such obvious discomfort, there can only be one cause, one source. I suppose you, like so many other young people today, believe that you, and you alone, have ever endured these pangs?", he chuckled and started refilling the empty pipe still grasped in his venerable hand. When he finished this tedious process, he used it to point directly at Christian's chest, "You have found yourself deeply in love, but you are terrified of the vulnerability that comes with declaring yourself. Very few men have not felt this same apprehension. You are no different, how ever much you wish to believe otherwise." He peered at Christian sternly, as if in expectation of a heated response.
Christian scowled, looking away. Is it that obvious?, he demanded of himself. He wondered if Olli had noticed any of this during the drive down from the city. For a moment, embarrassment mingled with alarm and he nearly squirmed in the chair. But he recalled nothing out of the ordinary from Olli, no signs of awareness, no hint that he knew anything of Christian's inner turmoil. Either that, or he was hiding it well.
"The solution is as obvious as it is challenging, young man: you must speak the truth. I'm quite certain the young lady will welcome your forthright...adoration.", chuckled Mr. Miller. Having spoke his mind, the old man seemed content. He leaned back again in his ornate arm chair, looking smug.
"What?", Christian started out of his reverie with a chuckle. He felt better, suddenly unwound. He sighed in amused relief, "The young lady... Oh, yeah, right. Well, thanks for the advice, Mr. Miller." Grinning like an idiot, he stood up, grasped the old man's hand and gave a brief shake which was returned along with another formal nod. Then he walked away. He felt the taut grin on his face give over to a short laugh as he came up to Olli. He reached out defiantly and pulled him into a brief hug. "All done, then? Let's go, if you're ready." He smiled a voiceless greeting to Mrs. Miller who seemed oblivious to his and Olli's closeness. Arm-in-arm, he guided them out of the store.
"What a nice old couple, eh?", said Olliver. He'd already stowed the bags in the back seat. In only moments, Christian pulled out into the street, the old BMW engine rumbling wearily into renewed, resigned motion. It was a wonder they hadn't broken down enroute! "Lydia really needs a new car. This old heap sounds like it's on it's last run! We were crazy to take it.", said Olliver with mock dread. He looked around the interior as if expecting it to die at once.
Christian snorted a playful reproach. "It'll be fine. Don't worry about it.", he said, quite amiably. He couldn't explain it, but suddenly, unexpectedly, he no longer felt any dread or guilt. It was confusing, really, but true. But why? He suddenly felt as if he'd just stepped out of the ring after an impossible match with an unlooked for victory, his opponent still standing, but clearly defeated. He laughed aloud as the image came into his mind.
He felt Olli suddenly staring at him as he again took the old, country road down to the lake. This time, the scrutiny was welcome and he grinned ahead into the murky gloaming of the forest. "Well, you're in a better mood. I saw you talking with Mr. Miller...what...?", said Olliver, now smiling in reaction to his own beaming expression. But Christian cut him off with a quick, firm touch to his handsome face, never taking his eyes off the slowly descending road, ahead. Olliver moved closer, resting his head on Christian's shoulder. He guided the vehicle the rest of the way holding Olli close to him, as if he'd never let him go.
At last, the cabin hove slowly into view in the seeping mists off the lake, as if in serene expectation of their arrival. Nothing was amiss, neither with what Christian saw nor what he felt. He knew, now, that whatever happened, whatever he said here over the next few days, he could handle it. He would say what he meant to say, had almost said once, but couldn't. His heart was ready and as sure, as real as the man he held in his arms. He took comfort from his own renewed confidence.
Beside him, in the warming dark, Olliver's low voice rumbled fondly, "Well, here we are, at last. Back again..." Christian stopped any other words, any other memories with a long, passionate kiss that seemed to go on forever, would go on forever into the endless night.
The End.

Afterword.
Hey guys, thanks again for your compliments! I've never written a 'romance' story before. So, I hope you'll pardon any and all 'over the top' cheesiness---if it's there. I can't tell, actually heh heh.
For my fellow writers, I chose: man against himself as the conflict, and modified third person point of view. I chose Christian's view, keeping out all others because he seems the most interesting to me. Theme: Help can come when least expected.
Sorry about not writing what happens in the cabin! I didn't feel right writing that for many reasons:
1: I don't want to spoil myself for something that might or might not happen in the real story! hehehehe.
2: I couldn't trust myself not to write bombastically to the point of nausea LOL
Again, thanks for the encouragement and compliments. Now, it's your turn!
;D

That was really beautiful Geoff!!! Although, I found myself wanting to read when Christian told Olli he loved him..it was ok. Because the way you wrote it.. I could "hear" it. Very well done... I loved it!! I'm working on mine..but it's from Olli's standpoint and it's hard. LOL. But I'm trying. I'm new at this as well.

Yes...it's difficult for me to get into Olli's head. I admire Jo's skill so much in finding a way to play someone who so obviously NOT like himself. Writing seems just as hard---a real challenge. I'm interested in reading how you handle this heh. The scene in the cabin. Yes. I have it all pictured even some of the dialog in my head, but I thought it best to leave it to everyone's imagination---whether he actually says the words or says something else, entirely. Incidentally, the scene with the old man---well, that was based on something similar that happened between me and my young nephew. heh heh. Only, I'm not as old as Mr. Miller and he's not as old as Christian (though they think and act very similarly...hmph!) ;D I hope more folks decide to write some fanfic. What I've read in this thread has changed my normal dislike of it all. Excellent writing in here. Can't wait now to write another. Geoff

I considered writing everything from that point of view, but quailed at the notion. Great writing! Though, he seems to skip over the scene when Chris tells Coco: I don't love you anymore! And the slap---or did I miss that? Geoff

But even forever must sometimes come to an end. Even a kiss. Such a kiss. This kiss...
And the kiss ignited a fire deep in his loins. He wanted Olli, here and now, right now. The pulse of his love for him became an urgent throb in his ears, his hands, his body to the point it was almost an agony of wanting. Olli's scent was luxuriant in the air between them, so masculine, so strong it drove his senses reeling. To hell with everything else, with all his plans. Who needed plans? Who needed words?, especially *those* words. Those three words...
Wasn't it enough that they were together, right now, right here?
But, his heart said again: no, not here, not now. You have something else, something more important to do, to say.
Finally, Christian spoke, his voice was husky with the keenness of his desire, "Let's go on in, now, Olli." Olli was lying full on top of him by now in the front seat; Christian's back was pressed against the car door. The heat between them had already fogged all the windows. He couldn't see out into the apple-harvest night, but he could smell it: deep, loamy earth, frigid water fecund with the promise of Spring after a cinnamon Winter---the chilly ferociousness of forbidden love.
Christian lost himself in the mingled aroma of it: the aromas of passion and romance. He became transcended. There was no tomorrow, no yesterday, only the urgency of the moment.
Olli moaned, nearly a deep groan, "Christian..." That was all he said, all he could say. He planted his face in Christian's chest and held on to him, a grasp that was not desperate, but quivering with need.
There came a burning, another burning between them, at that moment. The slightest touch from any part of Olliver on Christian's own flesh felt like a flame, a scalding heat, a yearning which he found impossible to deny.
But he did deny it. It wasn't easy. With gentle firmness, he pulled Olli's face up to meet his own. Then, after staring deep into Olli's beautiful eyes, he kissed him again. "Come on. Let's get inside." He smiled into Olli's face though, for a brief moment, Christian felt tears seep out of his own. To cover this momentarily lapse, he kissed Olliver again, then pushed him upright, off of himself.
The heat between them did not die.
"Come on, let's get this over with.", said Christian. He pulled the car-door handle behind him and slowly moved on out into the darkling forest night. He heard Olli sigh, still in the car and smiled to himself.
"Get what over with...Christian!", came Olli's protest as Christian disentangled himself from his arms. He couldn't help chuckling while he moved away to the car trunk. He could hear Olli complaining through the back window and smiled: good! Let him cool off a bit, he smirked to himself.
In the trunk, he'd already packed special supplies for the weekend: things for the dinner, things for after the dinner and things for after even that. He couldn't keep himself from a roguish grin as he gathered up the bags, packages and parcels. By the time he had all this done, Olliver came barreling around the car, indignant and ready to bitch.
"Oh, you are really funny.", Christian said, playfully. With an awkward movement because he was juggling everything else, he tossed the keys to the cabin to him. Of course, Olli missed them and they fell into the muddy grass with a dull clink. "Go ahead, open it up." Looking to the side, he shrugged ruefully, ignoring Oll's fuming expression. "Looks like we have no firewood, either. Figures. Well, we'll fix that once we get inside."
Christian's tone of voice was casual and not at all carrying his own impassioned intentions. All the desire, the heat of the moment he'd just felt was carefully concealed, camoflaged. He couldn't trust himself, otherwise.
Olliver scowled as he stooped to pick up the keys. "You really are such a dick. Have I mentioned that?", growled Oliver. He unlocked the door and stood waiting.
All Christian could do while moving to the door of the cabin was smile in contentment. Then he opened the door and looked inside. Together, nearly shoulder-to-shoulder, they marched inward. Into the cabin, at last.
to be continued...

Mgh48 - I love your story, don't forget to continue TGL, tiimmiitiippii,Thore's B*tch, Thanks for all the compliments on my story. Definitely better than the reactions at work I have to admit that if anyone IRL found out about it, they would NOT believe it. I rarely read romance novels, never watch soaps, and I'm not a gay man. Telling somebody that I'm writing stories based on the romance of a gay couple from a German soap? Not something they'd expect

It didn't take them long to get the cabin aired-out and relatively functional. Whoever had used it last had made certain everything was clean and packed-up properly. So much so, Christian couldn't tell if anyone had actually used it recently. Surely, someone had, though. There was no feeling of neglect or abandonment, no dust or other debris, at all. He looked around carefully, checking for any notes that might have been left, anything that would indicate someone had been here; but, nothing. Curious.
Olliver had already unpacked all the packages and grocery bags, taking a moment to comment on anything he found interesting or make silly jokes over items he did not. Apparently, he'd already calmed down from the heated episode in the car. Christian grinned roguishly when he remembered Olli's frustrated expression. Well, outrage, really.
I'll make it up to him, soon enough, he chuckled to himself. He took out a pack of long, red candles and fixed them securely into a little holder on the table then regarded the scene outside the large, full glass window.
Full night had come. No trace of the dying sun was apparent anywhere in the huge span of sky. The great boles of ancient trees thrust high into the gloaming welkin of the night, their branches grasping desperately, longingly at the myriad stars looming teasingly above. From the north, a steady breeze was blowing, shaking the lesser trees and shubbery, troubling the lake with a chaos of tiny waves and scattered woodland debris.
Far on the opposite banks, he could see a light, golden bright, pierce through the darkness to spangle the uneasy waters with shifting shadows and gleams. It was still early night with plenty of time left for what he had in mind.
Olliver came up behind him, suddenly, as he stared out the window, peering at the distant light. Christian could see his smiling face reflected faintly in the glass. Olli draped his arms around him, leaned his head on his shoulders. Without thinking, Christian leaned his head on to Olli's and together, they viewed the aging night. Warmth from their closeness in the car still lingered between them: a ghost of unrequited desire.
Olli sighed, unmoving, still looking outside, "So, what did you mean: 'let's get this over with'?" His breathing became slower, deeper. But, there was no reproach in his tone of voice, no suspicious probing. Only a casual curiosity.
"Huh?", Christian said, distractedly. He lied easily, "Oh. You know: unpacking and whatever. And, we're out of firewood. I definitely want some firewood." He moved out of Olli's arms, but still gave him a quick hug before heading to the door.
"Firewood? But why...", came Olli's query just as he opened the door. Christian turned back, gave him an impish wink and grin, "You'll see." He smirked as Olli rolled his eyes and made a face. Then stepped out into the already cooled evening. Autumn was nearly upon them, the equinox only a week or so away. Most of the leaves on the hardwoods had already turned though they had not yet fallen. The forest floor was not yet a carpet of gold and rust. Not yet. A strong gust of wind, however, blew a shower of leaves around him even as he moved along a trail into the woods, looking for the wood pile, like a promise of the coming Fall.
There it was, only a few meters into the trees: a great pile of cut wood, some of it old, some of it new in a roughly circular clearing. Christian could see the footprints of the woodcutters or other campers who had recently gathered from the pile in the faint lights from the cabin. He set to work, took-up and stacked as many chunks of wood as he thought he'd need, then started porting them back to the cabin. Afterwards, he split the logs into smaller pieces with an old axe, the exact same one he'd used before, so long ago. All-in-all, it took him an hour to stack, chop and lay the campfire.
The work warmed him, defying the cold of deepening night.
At last, the firewood was laid though he did not light it. He stood staring at it, recalling that night so long ago when he and Olliver had sat round the fire and just talked. He tried to remember what he was feeling back then. He remembered nothing in particular, other than lingering irritation with Coco and a kind of illogical friendliness towards Olli. Had it only been last year? So much had happened, since then. So much, he could barely feel any of the guilt he'd endured over the break-up with Coco.
I'm so tired of guilt, he told himself. Why do I always feel like everything, everything is all my fault...? Never mind, all that, his conscience broke in, you know you were only thinking of yourself last month, before and after the championship bout. Wasn't it your doing that Axel was able to hurt Olli? No, I did it for Olli...for us! Yeah, right, came the unwanted reply.
Christian shook his head, to hell with all consciences! Just then, he was distracted from his thoughts. Across the lake, he heard voices shouting and laughing. Another light sprang up and he thought it was either a campfire or perhaps a campstove. Vague figures moved in and out of view and he wondered again who else was sharing the lake campground at this time of year. Not that that was out of the ordinary, just unexpected. He hadn't thought to question the Millers about any other guests; and, of course, they wouldn't normally mention this one way or the other. It makes no difference to me, he told himself sternly. So long as they stayed away from he and Olliver for the next three days.
He frowned at the distant racket, then turned away, feeling a weird pang of foreboding. Which vanished as he entered the cabin. Everything was put away and ready, though that was a shock to see. Olliver was usually astonishingly haphazard when it came to clean-up and household chores. Christian was the 'neat freak'. He turned into the small living room and found Olliver dozing on the couch, leaned back with his eyes closed, his feet up on the little coffee table. Christian came up behind him and began to gently massaged his shoulders. "How are you feeling?", Christian wondered aloud, concern making his voice nearly too quiet to hear. "Are you sure your up for this?" It hadn't been more than a fortnight since...
Olli murmured, "Stop mothering me. I'm fine. Just a little tired." He smiled, "So, mighty lumberjack, have you conquered the wilderness and brought the wood? You smell like you've been lost in the forest for weeks." His laughter was only slightly taunting, but Christian just grinned.
"Yeah, come on! A hot shower is called for. If you can handle it, that is...", smirked Christian, already heading into the hallway leading to the bathroom. He started peeling off clothes on the way, carefully folding them as he went. Olliver jumped up and followed quickly, doing likewise, though he threw his clothing all over the place, leaving a careless trail of it enroute. When Christian looked at the mess and rolled his eyes at him, Olli looked around in confusion for a moment, then said, "What?".
Grinning, they both went into the little bathroom...
To be continued.
