Big Boys was commissioned back in late 2020, filmed last summer and expected to debut later this year on Channel 4. It's a semi-autobiographical take on out comedian Jack Rooke's life when he was starting university. He will narrate the show too, with young Jack to be played by Dylan Llewellyn. www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/big-boys-comedy-derry-girls-dylan-llewellyn/

New sitcom Big Boys stars Derry Girls actor Dylan Llewellyn and is coming to Channel 4 later this month - May 26. Official synopsis: Big Boys is a silly, sweet comedy about two boys from very different ends of the "spectrum of masculinity" who become best mates at Brent Uni freshers week 2013. Jack, 19, is a dweeby, sheltered, closeted boy from Watford, trying to both overcome grief after his dad's passing and figure out what he actually wants in life. He leaves potty-mouthed matriarch Peggy who has persuaded him to take up a scholarship at a local uni so he can make something of himself and not just be stuck at home, masturbating and knitting blankets to sell on Etsy. Meanwhile Danny, 25, is your typical loud and proud lads' lad. Hailing from a run-down seaside town, Danny is a few years older than every other fresher, trying to live out a lost adolescence whilst confronting the demons of his own mental health. Living in an ex-classroom shed on campus, the boys get thrown together by the enigmatic Jules, the head of the SU who was once a student herself a decade ago and has just never, ever, left. They soon meet Corinne, a sharp, study-centric Scot who's also learning to let her hair down and Yemi, the savvy fashion-kid who at 19 has already seen it all, done it all and begrudgingly guides this gang of misfits through freshers and beyond. And so we follow their first year at Brent Uni as they explore, experiment and try to discover themselves, helping one another along the way. Narrated by comedian Jack Rooke, Big Boys is based on his award-winning live Edinburgh Fringe shows Good Grief, Happy Hour and Love Letters.

It looks very British in terms of writing and casting, haha. Looking forward. A gay-led series is always a delight.

Whole season is out on All 4 for free. You need to use VPN though if you're not from UK

So with the good news that it's been renewed for a second series, I figure it deserves its own thread. Somehow there was none previously - I'm a bit puzzled how we missed it considering it's the only gay-led series on British terrestrial TV. (Actually, is it the ONLY gay-led show on terrestrial TV anywhere? Everything else seems to be on the streamers.) http://instagram.com/p/ChmerRmqEMj

I merged the two threads together.

I watched a few episodes and didn't like much. That's because I found the gay character too boring. I thought it was very easily consumable - just six half-hour episodes. Dylan captured the awkwardness of Jack perfectly, but I admit it felt like Danny/Jon Pointing got the bigger emotional arc, as well as the main romance. Could've done without the scatological humor in that one episode where he got naked though. (Not the nudity - Jon can get naked any day - but the context of the scene.) Hopefully with the renewal Jack gets more focus, and a regular love interest. I can never tell if shows with gay male leads feel they must have him share the spotlight with a straight co-lead to make it more palatable for the masses. It happens all the time. I merged the two threads together. Thanks kevvoi - I swear I did search before creating a new one because I was sure there had been a dedicated thread, but for some reason I just couldn't locate it.

Proboards search function is unfortunately terrible - so no worries.

I have just finished Season 1. I thought it's pretty well done. I am fine with how they dealt with Jack's character. I mean he is still in the closet and still trying to gain experience as a gay person. So naturally it's fine we don't get to see him having a love interest. I like how they write the friendship between Danny and Jack. Although they are polar opposites in many aspects, but they are facing similar issues on their own (ie. both coping with the loss of their fathers in different ways). It's like fate bringing them together. The cast is pretty likeable and the British pop culture tidbits they threw in gel with me as I grew up with them.
I can't wait for Season 2. Danny is fit but so is the lecturer (when he is down in his briefs. LOL). And I have a soft spot for Dylan when he was in Derry Girls, thought he is adorable.
