Jim Carrey (!) and Ewan McGregor as lovers. From the novel: Steven Russell, the subject of this true crime story, is a rare individual, a genius who has run afoul of the law, a prodigious intellect endowed with boundless energy, audacity and guile. Russell pulled off his first jailbreak while waving a stolen walkie-talkie at a guard as he sauntered out the front gate, and his last escape-a feat of staggering self-discipline-by faking a terminal case of AIDS over several months and forging his own death certificate. Russell also walked out of prison and into a six-figure job as a CFO of a major company-twice. (The title of the book refers to Russell's only proven weakness-his steadfast love for one-time fellow convict Phillip Morris.) Journalist McVicker has written an unexceptional book about this exceptional man, but Russell's charisma-shining through lackluster prose-is what makes this offbeat biography a success. Like any great con man, Russell has a charm that is both disarming and overpowering, but his criminal antics are more effective and make for more interesting reading because they are coupled with unlikely virtues: sincerity, diligence, fidelity, affability. What McVicker does well is capture the accident of Russell's descent into criminality, a series of events that turned a once law-abiding husband, father and former police officer into one of the most innovative criminal minds in recent memory. Expected for a wide release in 2009. More: feeds.towleroad.com/~r/towleroad/feed/~3/290253951/i-love-you-phil.html

What a cute poster!! Another 2 high profiled actors or should I say A-listed actors acting as gays. Hopefully it will create some buzz. But not too sure about this pairing. Looks a little awkward to me.

I did see a few pics stolen during the shooting of the movie, and...well, Jim Carey? playing a guy very much in love with a guy? I just can't buy it. I mean, he's an amazing actor, but still. I get no gay-vibes from him. Like at all. Ewan, I can see. Jim? no way. Ewan+Jim? It's just weird. Feels a little forced. BUT I'm glad two famous actors decided to take these roles. The story sounds promising, though

This is a trailer released for the film. I'm still unsure of how good will it be... But the film had been receiving good reviews at Sundance Film Festival.

This movie looks funny.

Ewan has played gay before in a few different things most notably Velvet Goldmine w/ Johnathan Rhys Meyers and Jim Carrey has never shied away from anything, so I am sure it will be good. I have to wait for it to come to DVD though as I have no one to go see it with.

Phillip Morris Finds Distributor for 2010 By Corey Scholibo (from the Advocate.com) I Love You Phillip Morris, the Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor dark comedy about a con man who falls in love with his cell mate, was picked up for distribution Tuesday by Consolidated Pictures Group. The release date has been set for Valentine's Day 2010. The film screened to good reviews at Sundance but languished as distributors struggled for a marketing plan. Featuring explicit gay sex, Phillip Morris is a romantic comedy between two men that makes no jokes about the fact that the two men are gay, unlike films like I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. The film was seen as too expensive for independent distribution to a specifically gay audience, and the writer-directors always intended for the film to be a mainstream romantic comedy, but it seemed that no studio was willing to take the gamble that it could work. www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid83707.asp

Explicit gay sex? I doubt so. I think they are referring to close-to-real life imitation gay sex.

We' re not talking about sex, as for I know. I' ve read that the film shows some kiss between the characters nothing more, but of course I can' t say that for sure because I haven't seen the movie yet. Anyway,we all know how narrow-minded certain people are, so... there's nothing to be surprised about! There are famous actors in this movie but even that wasn't enough to make them show this movie in the big screens! How pathetic!

They cut number of kisses from 5 to 2 after they had trouble finding a distributor. I also heard the two kisses left are in the dark and hard to see. Sex, any kind of sex, is very doubtful. Sorry, but my hopes for this movie have been greatly deminished.

If we could decide who we loved, it would be much simpler, but less magical.

Well sex can be great and all and I think both men have the guts to just go for it. But if he's suppose to be the great love and weakness of this guy's life, I would rather see lots of emotional love and affection rather than bodily fluids.

I actually heard that the sex scene between Jim Carrey and some other guy in the beginning of the movie is what was too explicit and that's why they needed to re-edit it and cut out a lot of stuff... the obvious question is: why don't they just re-edit that specific scene and leave the Carrey/McGregor scenes alone?

Good question! I think it's stupid too. People who have seen it at Sundance said they kissed 5 times, which I think is a minimum if you're going to be telling a LOVE STORY. People who saw it after Sundance said it now only contains TWO kisses, I mean a love story with that little affection? riiiiiight

I finally got to see this movie and I thought it was fantastic! Both Jim and Ewan were great in it and had great chemistry together imo. I think I saw the 5 kisses version and I they were really hot! It was really funny too! And i really couldn't believe it when the end said it was a true story-amazing!

Jim Carrey's 'I Love You Phillip Morris' back on the shelf April 8, 2010 EXCLUSIVE: [American] Audiences hoping to love Phillip Morris, or at least watch Jim Carrey loving Phillip Morris, will have to wait a little longer. Or maybe much longer. Consolidated Pictures Group, the start-up that was poised to release the Sundance title, has postponed the release once again. And this time it's indefinite. latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2010/04/jim-carrey-i-love-you-phillip-morris-delayed.html

I saw it in Ireland during the film festival but its on general release here now. There was great promotion for it too, lots of ads on the tv and radio and several really great reviews. i can't believe that its not being released in the US! What a waste when you consider all the really terrible films that get released!

Is it really not going to be released in the US? Are you sure? Because I saw it the other other at the cinema here in Italy, and I'm saying all with that! Everyone knows that here in Italy there's still too much homophobia! Ok they changed the title from I love you Philipp Morris into love at first sight - the wizard of frod, bacause they wanted people to focus on the fact that it was a action-comedy but still... Anyway it's a really great movie, with two great actors....I enjoyed it a lot!

What a waste when you consider all the really terrible films that get released! I saw it here yesterday. I liked it, but I think I saw the two kisses version. I only counted two kisses. Anyway, there were some issues with the movie. I don't think they showed enough of the romance between Phillip and Steven. It is called "I love You Phillip Morris" after all. Secondly, I did not like how they used AIDS in the movie. Thirdly, they focused too much on Steven as a con artist, sure, it was fun. But I still wouldn't mind to se a little bit more of the romance. I thought the first half of the movie was very strong, but then it kinda died off a bit in the second half. I actually found the second half to be kinda boring. Overall it was a good movie, far from perfect. but I liked it. I'll give it 6/10.

Now I'm looking forward to it.... from what I hear from you I have to wait till 29 April.. that's when it comes out in Germany. It was a good movie, but FAR from prefect. The first half was very good, romantic and funny. The second half was boring and we didn't see any romance at all. And it wasn't very funny either. Oh yeah, and the Sundance version had 6 kisses. The cut version I saw (and I assume all of Europe) only had two kisses It was just not a great movie. I'll give the first half 8/10 and the second half 4/10, that means the whole movie deserves a 6/10.
