Looks like Mexico is making up for lost time after years of minimal or negative gay male representation. For the past year gay couples have been featured in what feels like every other novela, with the highlight being last summer's limited series El corazón nunca se equivoca, which was anchored on the gay teen couple Aristemo, played by Emilio Osorio and Joaquín Bondoni. With their resounding popularity both within Mexico and internationally, which netted them their own spin-off series, Aristemo seem to have opened the floodgates for gay representation on Mexican novelas.
The spin-off also starred Sian Chiong as the (straight) love interest of Aristemo's female housemate, but now Sian will be playing Diego, one-half of a gay couple on the upcoming novela La mexicana y el güero, to begin airing on Las Estrellas in a month's time (17 August). It's apparently a remake of a 2006 Chilean novela Cómplices. His love interest Dr Sebastian De La Mora will be played by Eleazar Gómez.
Now to temper expectations: Sebastian and Diego are supporting characters so I'm not sure how much screentime they will get. Also, this production was meant to start in March but was delayed by 3 months to June due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and they are obviously having to take precautions onset which - following the example of other shows that resumed filming - will probably mean no physical intimacy (not even kissing) between the actors. But before it gets too depressing, both actors have been posting backstage material that indicates they will still be getting their shirts off so ... yay?
