'Malhação: Toda Forma de Amar' will have first gay protagonist of the series
In an important step toward progress, the new season of Malhação, titled "Toda Forma de Amor" ("Every Form of Love"), will have a gay character among its protagonists.
Guga (Pedro Alves) is that kind of friend that everyone would like to have. From childhood, he cultivates a very close friendship with Philippe (Peter Novaes) and Beto (John Buckley), but has never talked to them about the subject that most afflicts him internally. Cheerful and always taking care of other people, he comes to the realization that he needs to pay more attention to himself. The boy has just broken up with Meg (Giulia Bertolli), someone he only sees as a friend, and doesn't correspond the interest of the young women he meets in college or at parties. Gradually, Guga begins to question his sexual orientation. Sharing his struggles with his family is extremely difficult. Being from an upper middle class family, he lives in a luxury apartment in Ipanema and has a family that is constantly worried about their own image. His father, Max (Roberto), an entrepreneur that cultivates a 'bon vivant' lifestyle, is the kind that prides himself on having a handsome son, who attracts women's interest. In his vision, Guga ended up with Meg to "enjoy life" as he did when he was young. His mom, Regina (Karine Teles), on the other hand, is able to see through the behavior of her son, to whom she's very attached to. On the Internet, Guga meets Serginho (João Pedro Oliveira), a young men from a low-income family, who works in a store in Ipanema and lives in poor suburb of Duque de Caxias with his brother Camelo (Ronald Sotto) and his grandmother Margarida (Ana Miranda). The two begin to talk and arrange a meeting to get to know each other better. It's precisely on that day, when he's returning home, that Guga enters a van that joins his destiny to the other protagonists: young Rita (Alanis Guillen), Raíssa (Dora de Assis), Thiago (Danilo Maia), Anjinha (Caroline Dallarosa) and Jaqueline (Gabz). Together, they witness a crime and with the union of the group due to the unfolding of the case, Guga becomes very close to Rita, who will gradually become his new best friend and 'counselor' on his journey of discovery. "What moves Guga is love. He's the kind of person who gets on well with everyone, is a good friend, a good son. When he realizes that his feelings for Meg is just friendship, he starts a search to understand himself, his love, and this will be a difficult path, especially when facing the prejudice of the people closest to him", says Pedro Alves, happy with his debut on TV. ‘Malhação: Toda Forma de Amar’ will bring many kinds of 'love stories': couples, parents and children, siblings or a group of friends. In the main plot, a group of young people will witness a crime, having their lives radically altered by the event. Scheduled to debut on April 16, the season is written by Emanuel Jacobina.

Doing a little research, here's the Instagram of the two gay characters this season: Pedro Alves (Guga)
João Pedro Oliveira (Serginho)

I think they had gay characters in previous seasons. There was an article about this show in a spanish newspaper about the fact that they touch the theme of sexual abuse on soccer
edit: Ok, i just watch that this show has other thread for previous season

From what I understood, Guga will be one of the main characters on this new season.

It's only taken them 27 years to get here but given the current atmosphere in Brazil it could not be more timely.

Isn't this the same show that just had a gay football player as a protagonist? Santiago? He has his own lead storyline. Or is this a different show with the same title? I know each season has a different subtitle but it is the same show no?

His character was added halfway through the season and was mostly a supporting character. What this past season did differently was that they would bring focus to a different character every 15 days, so they were able to create a lot of storylines using the whole cast, including all the supporting charterers. The new season will have a group of "friends" as protagonists, and one of those main characters will be Guga, who's gay

Although this past season we saw them rotate the characters through their own mini-story arcs, there was still a clear hierarchy of characters with two major couples dominating. I don't think Guga and his boyfriend will be featured nearly as much as those main couples were this past season. But I guess we'll see next week.

I can't really comment on airtime before the show has even started, but simply the fact that Guga's two storylines (the one with the other 5 protagonists and his own with Serginho) are being introduced in the beginning of the season (and not halfway through like Santiel) already shows they are treating the character differently. Another interesting detail is that Guga is one of the few roles this season with parents as regular characters on the show (and not guests like in the Santiel storyline). One good thing about Santiel and the past season was that, with the way they presented the show and their mini-arcs, both Michael and Santiago got some strong weeks with a lot of scenes/action... I'm sure with Guga and this season, things will be more spread out throughout the whole thing.

This season looks interesting... more in line with the "Viva a Diferença" season.
I read that Guga will be a freshmen in college. That's cool that they are expanding the characters beyond high school. Also, having Serginho as Guga's love interest will probably bring aspects of race and socioeconomic inequality into their storyline (considering Guga is described as someone from a wealthy origin)

The new season looks great so far. It's actually much better the last one overall. The entire cast is very likeable and Guga has been heavily featured (which is pretty great). I've read that ratings are up and social media response is also much stronger. Excited for what's to come!

It's good that Guga is well-integrated into the main story but does he have a love life of his own?

It's good that Guga is well-integrated into the main story but does he have a love life of his own? Well... most of the main characters haven't get there yet. Only Anjinha has an actual relationship and love storyline. Jaqueline has a boyfriend who is really secondary on her storyline (I think she'll eventually get together with Thiago). Guga, Thiago, Rita and Raíssa have no love life yet, but we are getting hints of where each storyline will lead in the romance department. Right now, Guga and Rita are pretending to be a couple... she realized he's gay (probably the only one who knows apart from Serginho) and is helping him getting his parents and friends off his back about his break-up with long-time girlfriend Meg. Some characters have pointed out how weird their relationship is as they barely show any sort of affection or PDA, but I don't think anyone suspect he's gay apart from Serginho's brother, who doesn't like Guga and Serginho's friendship as he sense there's a little spark there and he doesn't accept his brother's sexuality.

Loved the sequence where Guga reveals to Felipe that he's gay. Really cute! Felipe is a good friend and it's nice to see that Guga can confide in one of his best friends.

Is there still no semblance of a gay romance on this show? It's been months...

Is there still no semblance of a gay romance on this show? It's been months... Yes. Even though both Serginho and Guga were really prominent throughout the show up until now (they are really cute together), their relationship has been developing a lot more lately (Guga was on a bunch of different storylines that are now ending and his sexuality has been taking center stage on the show now). The actor who plays Guga just confirmed they are airing #Guguinho's first kiss soon and that a lot of new developments are coming for the character.

Thanks for the update, hopefully they will be less stingy with the gay romance this time around.

Guga and Serginho's first kiss happened last week. I'm a bit behind on this season, so I need to catch up and see what's going on with their storyline
