I don't know how historical this show is supposed to be gay. Lord Alfred and Drummond are both real-life figures and as far as I can tell, neither had any same-sex dalliances, much less with each other. In fact one of them clearly enjoyed sex with his wife enough to father an awful lot of children.
I guess it's a refreshing change to the typical case where the few historically gay personages are straight-washed to make them more palatable to a mainstream audience. (If this show survives into Queen Victoria's golden years, I'd be interested to see their take on two of her royal grandsons who were dogged by gay rumours.)

Here is a scan from an interview with Leo Suter who plays Drummond. He says Drummond has feelings for Alfred.

In fact one of them clearly enjoyed sex with his wife enough to father an awful lot of children. At no point in Western history has fathering children been an indicator of whether or not a man is/was gay or proof that he "enjoyed sex" with his wife (or women in general). In most of Western history fathering children was seen as an expectation/obligation of all men regardless of station or actual sexual orientation.

In most of Western history fathering children was seen as an expectation/obligation of all men regardless of station or actual sexual orientation. I don't disagree with the notion that men are/were expected to procreate. But Lord Alfred had FOURTEEN children - and those are just the ones who survived to adulthood, at a time when infant mortality was high. Even in the 19th century I would think the obligation to father children would have ended after 3 or 4 viable offspring. No one expected you to pop out more than a dozen. Anyway, it's a moot point. The people behind the show themselves admitted this homosexual affair is one area where they have taken liberties with history. I am in no way upset or disappointed by this twist. After the relentless straight-washing of historically LGBT characters, it is beyond time the reverse happens. I will be interested to see if they broach homosexuality with some of the known/rumoured gay/bi men in the show. (Queen Victoria's son-in-law, two of her grandsons)

This kiss is really something !! Truly beautiful !! (currently uploading it to my tumblr 'cause i haven't been able to find it on youtube or anywhere else. you'll find it @dramatic-koala once it's done processing, which shouldn't take that long)(i would have used youtube but i assume it'll be taken down quite quickly)

I think the writers of this show have been taking the historical timings of certain events with a large pinch of salt. By 1843 when Princess Alice (V&A’s 3rd child who was conceived and born in the space of 2 episodes) was born, Drummond was already married.
*Potential Spoiler Alert* (Don’t know how to blank out text - sorry!)
In fact he was actually dead! Having been shot 3 months prior. I do wonder if this will be part of the final episode this series. After the kiss last week, a way to really shock the audience and keep within historical context (albeit a few months late).

Since I read up about the historical characters I knew that was coming. But they'd fudged the timelines so I didn't realize it would happen so quickly!

I am so tired of the kill your gays trope. There's no reason why this storyline couldn't have continued.

A period piece from a few years ago. Gay Storylines is posting clips. Here is the first one:
I swear I remember this storyline being posted on the board at some point - but after looking through the first 15 pages of threads, couldn't find it.

Thanks Yuan!- that helped narrow down where it was - it didn't come up when I searched and I missed it when I was scrolling through the pages (I hate proboards indexing!). I have merged the threads.
