Very interesting character, lots of layers.
I always thought he'd grow up to be gay.
I'm really glad they're going this direction with his character.

I've always wondered whether they always intended to make Ben gay, or if they only chose to do so because the original Ben (Charlie Jones) was so camp in his portrayal of the character. Whilst Charlie was playing Ben it was widely predicted that a 'coming out' storyline was on the cards. But when Joshua took over, they seemed to be turning him into a hardman jailbird like his dad.
Anyway, I'm glad they stayed true to the original portrayal of Ben and are doing this storyline. It should be interesting.

I don't think "hard man" and gay are mutually exclusive. It's possible that Ben was always meant to come out as gay as a teen and while he may have liked "girly" things as a little boy, his life experience has tempered his openess to being perceived as unmacho. With Phill Mitchell as a father, it's not surprising to me that Ben would become more introverted as he grew older and less free in expressing himself.
Plus, he has gone through some horrible experiences over the last two years and that is bound to change him (along with the normal teen angst, insecurities and self consciousness)
I'd imagine that the character has always been played the way the writers and directed wanted it to be played.
Changing the actors may allow for the character to appear more mature or even more "manly" but I don't think it has anything to do with the style of acting.
The changes in Ben's personality fit with what has happened to him.
