Does anyone following this show speak Korean? I would love to know what was said in the conversation between the moms in episode 31!

Nice to see there's a thread for Life Is Beautiful! I'm a big fan of Japanese Dramas and stumbled upon this Korean one by accident. And not only the T/K story is amazing also the rest of the series is well done. I've read that the writer is called the current master of K-Drama and I think it's justified given how carefully he dealt with the issue on a family show in the super conservative Korea. I wish the Japanese TV makers would be a bit more like that. btw, the subs for the crucial episode 31 are already available at WithS2. Unfortunately, the youtube user stopped posting the vids though. But maybe, he/she is on vacation at the moment. Also in episode 34 they shared their first Kiss, but only on the forehead. I hope we'll get to see a real one soon!

I've been slowly making my way through the episodes at the Dramacrazy.net link that you posted, kevinlantojack. It's interesting and I'm fascinated by the cultural differences. The style, attitudes of the characters, and what they show (and don't show) is so different from some of the other shows on this board. Especially, for example, Germany's AWZ and VL. Not better, not worse, just different. Some of the pressures are the same, but some are different (the expectations of others and of themselves and how they fit in society, for example). Kyung Soo's mother, who shows up far too often for my taste , is a painful example. Spoiler?: I'm also rolling in laughter at some of the middle uncle's (Byung Jun) reactions in his developing relationship with the Chief Officer (I forget her full name of the top of my head), and Dong Gun's incessant overtures to Cho Rong ;D. Although, given the overall style and conservative nature of the show, I don't expect anything on-screen any time soon, if at all . end spoiler Note: Not sure how much should be considered a spoiler, so I put some of this in color.

I just finished watching episode 33 and I'm so hooked!! When I first started watching the show it was mostly out of curiosity over how the TaeSub/KyungSoo storyline would be handled since, well, a gay couple in a Korean drama?? It's the first time I've ever heard of it happening and given South Korea's reputation with gay issues...But I've been pleasantly surprised! Hopefully this is a sign of gradual change for the better in South Korea. Spoiler?: I'm also rolling in laughter at some of the middle uncle's (Byung Jun) reactions in his developing relationship with the Chief Officer (I forget her full name of the top of my head), and Dong Gun's incessant overtures to Cho Rong ;D. Spoiler?: To be fair, there's a strong hint of something off-screen at the very end of Episode 16 ;D. Although, given the overall style and conservative nature of the show, I don't expect anything on-screen any time soon, if at all . end spoiler I've been enjoying that as well! And when **possible spoiler if you haven't seen episode 28** When JiHye caught her husband at the movies with another woman, I thought she was gonna beat that man to a pulp! The look in her eyes was murderous! I love that the women in their family are so feisty. Even the grandmother is a little spitfire hahaha I've only seen a handful of Korean dramas before but if they're anything to go by, even if TaeSub and KyungSoo were a straight couple you probably wouldn't ever see much more than a few kisses. And even then, the kissing probably wouldn't be very satisfying as kisses in K-dramas tend to be kind of...limp and subdued. ...Am I the only one who gets distracted by KyungSoo's forehead/eyebrows? They never move. It's like they're frozen in place. I'm thinking the actor might have went a little heavy on the Botox

I watched 19 through 42, and then went back to episode 1 and have just gotten back to episode 21 again ;D. Yeah, I was really curious what they would do with it. The writing is pretty good, not perfect. The acting is a little stoic at times, though it's perforated with some extreme (OTT?) stuff that seems a bit out of place. Some of the actors are better at it than others. I kind of roll my eyes at the fact that they insist on ending almost every episode with some kind of lame attempt at slapstick comedy . Even when it's completely uncalled for (like the end of episode 30). Either that or everyone on Jeju Island is a klutz ;D. I've been enjoying that as well! And when **possible spoiler if you haven't seen episode 28** When JiHye caught her husband at the movies with another woman, I thought she was gonna beat that man to a pulp! The look in her eyes was murderous!>> Yeah ;D. It did seem a bit OTT to me. Not that I blame Soo In for it, given how overbearing Ji Hye is . << Hehe. She seems to get a perverse pleasure from torturing the grandfather ;D. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. < Considering the other kisses between straight folks, I don't really expect TS and KS to ever kiss on-screen . > I'm going to have to look a little more closely now . Like I said, the acting from some of the actors seems really held-back and stoic at times. Maybe facial expressions are a byproduct of their comfort level with the story material?

About the acting and writing, you gotta know that K-Dramas are usually filmed only a week in advance, so there is a lot of time pressure. Compared to other K-Dramas and considering there are two 60min episodes a week, the LiB-team is doing a really good job. You guys are right about the kiss. Even straight couples rarely have a kiss on screen. It's even worse with Japanese shows where the kisses are usually only a slight touch of closed lips for half a second. On Japanese TV this is considered a romantic surprise kiss. >_< However, T/K were voted best couple on the show, recently. So there is probably a change of mind about gays in South Korea at the moment and there'll be some action. ;D There is also another Korean show from 2006 called "Hyena" that featured a gay guy and his story. It's not on dramacrazy, though, but you can find it on d-addicts.com. As for K's forehead, I just watched a few scenes and you're right that it never moves. The actor is only 30, though, but we're talking about South Korea, so botox is quite likely. btw, I'm impressed that you guys can memorize these Korean names. I have my dearest problem with that, because they all sound the same to me and then there are also a gazillion ways of addressing people with all sorts of words that mean things like "brother of the mother of my sister in law's dogsitter". It's too much for me. XD any one know in which episode did the Taesub & Kyungsoo story line start? It started right from the first episode and they are basically present in each of the 50 episodes that were aired so far.

Even when it's completely uncalled for (like the end of episode 30). Either that or everyone on Jeju Island is a klutz ;D. Yeah that tripping shtick gets a bit old, but I kind of enjoy when ByungGul (the youngest uncle) falls. He's such an immature, ignorant, frustrating man most of the time, I feel like he's getting his comeuppance when he falls ;D Like I said, the acting from some of the actors seems really held-back and stoic at times. Maybe facial expressions are a byproduct of their comfort level with the story material? Possibly. Which actors do you think are stoic or held-back? ...I'm still thinking the actor who plays KyungSoo got some Botox in the forehead area, though, and that's why he can't seem to make any proper facial expressions without looking a bit dead in the eyes (that, or he's just not a very good actor). Given how rampant plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are in South Korea it wouldn't surprise me if he uses Botox. I've got suspicions of a nose job as well. However, T/K were voted best couple on the show, recently. So there is probably a change of mind about gays in South Korea at the moment and there'll be some action. ;D Earlier I was on the website for the show looking at the wallpapers for the characters. I noticed TaeSub/KyungSoo have 3 wallpapers available for download while the other couples only have 1 each, and one of their couple wallpapers is the most downloaded of all the wallpapers. I figured they must be a popular couple, but I didn't know they'd been voted the best couple on the show! There is also another Korean show from 2006 called "Hyena" that featured a gay guy and his story. It's not on dramacrazy, though, but you can find it on d-addicts.com. I forgot about "Hyena"! I was interested in watching it a few years ago but I could never find subtitles btw, I'm impressed that you guys can memorize these Korean names. I have my dearest problem with that, because they all sound the same to me and then there are also a gazillion ways of addressing people with all sorts of words that mean things like "brother of the mother of my sister in law's dogsitter". It's too much for me. XD HAHAHA XD. I started listening to Korean music back in like 2002 and have had an interest in the culture/language since then, so remembering the names and all that other stuff is old hat for me ;D

Compared to other K-Dramas and considering there are two 60min episodes a week, the LiB-team is doing a really good job. Really? That's impressive, considering a lot of other shows are filmed 4-8 weeks in advance. I guess we'll see ;D, but somehow I'm not going to hold my breath . Lol, I had to write down a cheat-sheet to keep it straight. The little hints on some of the subtitled clips (from the WithS2 site linked above) are helpful. I don't speak a word of Korean so I'm completely dependent on the translators, but they often use words that don't appear to have direct translations. ( I thought "Lee seobang" was the guy's name until I figured out it means something like brother-in-law ). The ways they refer to each other really threw me at first. I'm amazed how many variations there are on the word "hyung" . Is it really commonplace in Korea (and/or other parts of Asia) to refer to each other by familial relationships and/or titles instead of first names? For example, I still have no idea what the grandparent's names are, because they always say "grandmother", "grandfather", "mother", or "Byung Tae's mom", etc. I've figured out almost everyone else's names, though, and who's related to whom.

He's such an immature, ignorant, frustrating man most of the time, I feel like he's getting his comeuppance when he falls ;D Oh, Byung Gul . I wish he'd shut up most of the time, I really can't stand him. I'm glad he doesn't really have any of his own storylines, he just supports the others. Although, he needs to do a ton of growing up on his own (despite the fact that he's something like 52 years old ) which would be a meaningful story all on his own. I don't know, I guess it's just a general impression I get from both actors (that play TS and KS). In scenes where I would expect a strong emotional response, it seems to be a bit flat. For what it's worth, I'm comparing it to the performances on, for example, AWZ and VL, where they are very emotive and expressive. But it's not meant to be a strong criticism on my part; this is the first show I've ever watched from that part of the world, so I'm trying not to confuse the performances of individual actors with the overall style and tenor of the show. I thought ATWT was conservative with showing intimate moments, but LiB is even more restrained.

Thank you . The YouTube link doesn't work, but the first one does (though I can't navigate it ). I like them, too. They've grown on me as I've watched the story unfold. I've watched up through episode 45, and am patiently waiting for the folks at WithS2 and DramaCrazy to translate and post the next episodes . I'll have to look at your link, if I can figure it out .

Ugh . Such a sad thing for people to do; so much misunderstanding. It's kind of funny, in a way. The fact that the ad exists is so much like the attitudes expressed in the show, it's amazing. That both Tae Sub and Kyung Soo struggle greatly with the competing pressures is hardly "glamorous", and I think the show does a good job at portraying guys in their situation. I wonder how closely the "union" actually pay attention when they watch ( if they watch ). Kudos to Hong Seok Cheon, though .

I was catching up on AfterElton tonight, and noticed a reference to Life is Beautiful in this article - a link to this article. Apparently, someone decided that showing a gay storyline in a prison setting will turn the inmates gay. I think some education is in order .

I was catching up on AfterElton tonight, and noticed a reference to Life is Beautiful in this article - a link to this article. Apparently, someone decided that showing a gay storyline in a prison setting will turn the inmates gay. I think some education is in order . Ugh, that is just absolutely ridiculous! I really hope things will get better with the younger generations... Recently there was another drama that aired in South Korea called "Personal Taste" that incorporated some gay themes (for most of the show's run the leading man was mistakenly thought to be gay by the leading woman and a secondary male character who actually was gay) and in one interview for the show some of the actors were asked if they knew any gay people or had any gay friends--one said a friend he'd known for 10 years recently came out and he praised him for his courage, another (who is a member of a well known boy band) said that he found out a singer he had trained with at his record label (but I think is no longer at the label?) is gay and he had no problem with it because he's "an open-minded guy". These guys are both in their 20s (29, 23), so hopefully their responses can be taken as a sign that at least some kind of change is happening with the younger generations, no matter how gradual it might be.

I find it easier to navigate the tudou playlist from the channel: www.tudou.com/home/item_u69737387s0p1.htmlAnother option, if you use Google Chrome, is that you can just set Chrome to translate the site automatically. It's not perfect, but it works.
