It's sad, and it's sad for a lot of different things. In my opinion, cbs took this decision long time ago, and even the failure of the show that substitued GL didn't change their minds. It's dissapointing because last rumours said that the show will be renewed, and at some points this is like the bbc shows about dinnosaurs, it's the end of an age (and the decission of not moving to the AMC for OLTL don't make me feel good about that show either).
After watching OLTL episode yesterday, i feel really bad about ATWT because what OLTL did was show commitment with their storyline. This two years, the show jus use Van and Jake for publicity, but don't give them the protagonism at the level of their popularity. In my opinion Jake won't have any problem, the show just give him so many vacations lately that he jus won't notice the change, in fact i'm sure he will find a job in another soap very soon. My concern is with Van, yes he had recognized his talent with all his emmy nominations, but he is more linked to his character than Jake, and sometimes that makes difficult to find another role. I hope they find new and better roles soon, because they show a lot more commitment with the characters than the writers and the show.
I will miss them, because i watched the episodes every week, but then you get used to not watching the show (the same way i get used to not seeing hollyoaks), and with a little luck, we'll see Van and Jake's next jobs

I just heard the news on the radio and honestly, the first thing I thought was that this could be a good thing for Van and Jake. Don't get me wrong, I love Nuke.. but sometimes talented actors are playing safe by just keeping their job as a soapie. I think the cancelation of ATWT forces them to move on in their carreers and I hope they will be recognized as talented actors and I am sure they will find new jobs in soaps/series soon!

Well... I share the opinion. First it will be really hard for Van - I guess. A dramatic change, something that was the basis of a "lifestyle" will vanish. After these years it will be good for him to find new challenges, but I'm sure that he would be happier if not the circumstances forced him. On the other hand I really think that his talent and charm will lead to a new, better role somewhere. At least I'll keep my fingers crossed!

If we could decide who we loved, it would be much simpler, but less magical.

I surprised that CBS has canceled another soap so soon. And one that has been on for so long, generations have watched this soap over the years. That leaves CBS with only The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless. Two soaps I never found that interesting, and I wonder how long they will last.
I hope that all the cast including Van and Jake find good work in the coming future. And I hope that at least the writers give Luke and Noah a proper send off.

I agree with you, acting is such unstable job, that sometimes having a contract make it uneasy looking for another opportunities, and Van deserve so much better that this little airtime he recieves on ATWT. Maybe it'll be tough at the begining, but he has the talent to survive to this. And at least he hastime to make plans for his future jobs, because the show will be on air until september 2010.

That leaves CBS with only The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless. Two soaps I never found that interesting, and I wonder how long they will last. I knew a cancellation was imminent but didn't expect it so soon after the same network canceled GL. The only (minuscule) hope of survival ATWT has is that it is picked up by another network. Otherwise it is curtains for good. I hope that, if that does come to pass, they give all the characters we cared about (not necessarily liked) the endings they deserve. (Hint: A commitment ceremony for Nuke would be nice.) I don't think CBS will cancel Y&R or B&B anytime soon; one is the top-rated soap in the US and the other is the world's most watched soap; but then again I might be wrong. I do "enjoy" Y&R - enjoy may not be the right word because it is so gloriously dark and depressing, while its sister soap B&B is Camp Central (though OLTL is catching up!) Both shows are suffering from a dearth of creativity but I suspect their ratings can sustain them for a good while longer, if they can maintain them. One must remember ATWT and GL were both at the bottom of the pile, while Y&R and B&B are the top two.

I feel bad for those who liked ATWT. I could never get past the quality of the writing. I like Nuke, but they've been given one lame storyline after another. I also think that Van Hansis is too talented for ATWT and now he'll be forced to spread his wings. I don't think he's going to have a hard time finding another job. Jake will find something, too.

When I first read this I was like: What?? Is this some kind of stupid joke or what? I don't actually watch as the world turns I only watch Luke and Noah even if, I know, their storylines are pretty lame, but I simply love to see them together. But I guess we can't do anything about it so, let's just look at the bright sight... you're right, this is a great opportunity for both of them to show their talent, because they're really really talented, Van above all. My only fear is that maybe their faces are so associated to their characters that it will be difficult for them to get over it and find another job, but I hope this won't happen. Anyway, they still have some time to figure things out and to plan their future. Good luck boys! ^_^

I feel less bad for any of the young actors than the middle-aged actors who are too young to retire, but too old to have a strong chance of snagging a breakout role in primetime. The Lily-Margot-Susan generation of actors are probably off the screen for good.
I doubt typecasting will be an issue for Hansis. Soap roles barely register on the outside world. People are vaguely aware of the fact that their favorite actor got his or her start in the soaps, but rarely even know what that role was. 7 months ago, I knew that Nathan Fillion had played a character named Joey Buchanan, but new nothing beyond that. I knew Ryan Phillipe had played a gay kid, but that's it. I know that Jack Wagner, Judith Light, and others were on soaps, but didn't know even what soap or role. (I know about Judith Light now, but only because I've become a OLTL fan).
US soaps are about as typecasting as summer stock. The real danger is being pegged as a daytime actor at all, which can make it harder to jump to other roles.
Now I suppose it's the time to start figuring out endgames. Certain pairings (Lily/Holden, Jack/Carly) are probably pre-ordained. But will Paul and Emily stay together? I'm not sure if I saw them as permanent soulmates, but that's probably the best way to send them out at this point. I'm not current enough on most of the other pairings to even begin to speculate. I suspect this greatly reduces the chances of the Craig/Janet pairing I'd been hoping for, though.

I think you are right, Van role is very symbolic but being on a soap make his impact, limited, and that's good for Van's future. The good think is that they have time to make plans, and go to castings, because is not like when a prime time show is cancelled, that the actor find themselves suddenly unemployed, at least they have time and for sure they'll be prepared when the show get off the air

I read on a forum that Jake posted this on his facebook_
Hey everyone, Im sure you've heard the sad news. It's been a wonderful ride and I am sorry that the story line will not be around for you wonderful die hard fans. I promise to work my hardest to be a part of new, and hopefully, as emotionally rewarding stories in the future. Lets enjoy the rest of the ride!
He is such a nice guy, i hope he'll have luck after ATWT ends. Well, he is very popular and charming so i'm pretty sure at least a couple of soaps will be interested in him
