Not too terribly interesting lately. It was nice to see Pam & Les invite Ben to stay the night with Paul. I didn't expect that. Though the morning was a bit awkward. I'm curious if they're going anywhere with Steven and Lauren, or if the break-up is permanent. I'd like to see how Steven and Johnny get along .

Today's episode was really good, even a Ben & Paul scene. Phil said Paul was family, and Ben had a really sweet bonding moment with Pam.

I finally got caught up with the last month or so. I hate Babe. She's still a miserable excuse for a person. Can they finally get rid of her? I can't wait for the whole blackmail storyline to end. At this point I'd rather Les' secret be known, if only to keep Babe away from them. Les is still ashamed of Christine, though, so it might do more harm than good right now. Dunno. It's nice that Phil and Pam are coming around to Ben and Paul being together. We don't get to see a lot of the happy times between them, but it seems clear they do happen.

Wait. Did Pam seriously think Paul was going to leave with them? Really? The whole exchange where Pam thought Paul would go with them if Ben weren't in the picture just felt odd to me.
As for Ben ... I'm not sure what the point of having Ben brush off Paul's hand at the Queen Vic was. He hasn't really shied away from PDA in the past, so why now? He even kissed Paul in public a couple months ago (though maybe that was just to get Phil's reaction?). I really hope this doesn't become a running theme now.
And now Ben wants to help run the funeral parlor with Paul? It doesn't really seem like something he would be interested in doing. Or maybe it's just to be closer to Paul? Or? It just seems a bit odd. I like that they're a reasonably solid couple now, but it would be nice if the development was a bit more even.
Anyone know if there's a back story with Paul's mother? I'm curious why Pam reacted the way she did.

Hmm. So once again Ben pulled away from PDA with Paul. Don't really like that theme. Still hoping it doesn't last long. Still, I like seeing Ben otherwise committing himself to his relationship with Paul. Moving in together and running a business together. They're a bit of an unlikely couple to run a funeral home, but it's a start. I wonder exactly how Paul's mom is going to be revealed. I'm also still wondering what the history is.

Was that Johnny & Steven chatting at the bar? Would have liked to hear that conversation. How is it that Louise was the person to get Ben to loosen up with Paul in public? Weird. But it was nice to see the PDA on full display, finally. It's taken forever to get to this point. Spoiler: It's too bad it's going to end soon.

I guess that's the end of the road for Paul - truly the height of tragedy. EE does love to dish out the misery.
But where is Ben? The fact that Paul was fatally injured in a fight does unfortunately suggest a gay-bashing ... I hope not but it doesn't look good for Ben.

This episode just felt odd. They really could have played up the tension with the Mitchells worrying about Ben and then thinking he was dead, but it mostly just fell totally flat. That said, the reveal of Paul at the very end was quite sad, and Ian and Phil's relief was really well done. It does kind of sound like this may have been a homophobic attack (I think Ian said something about the police saying Ben had been in a fight), which is another bummer. It's strange that they didn't show it onscreen, though, which added to the odd feeling of the episode.

I have to say i am really disappointed in the writers. finally ben came to terms with kissing paul in public. paul is really happy and ben wants "to show him off" and exactly in that night in seems like a gay-bashing has happened. oh come on... only the fact that ben is still kind of missing gives my a tiny bit of hope for a little plot twist.

Assuming it was a gay bashing (like everyone seems to be talking about), I'm torn. On the one hand, yes, it is a tired soap cliché, and I do feel like gay bashings (thankfully) aren't as common in 2016 s they were back in lets say the 80's or 90's. So assuming it really was a gay bashing, the storyline does feel a bit "dated" and "old fashioned". That said, whether we like it or not gay bashings still happen, sure, it was a lot more common back in the old days, and we have moved forward thank god. But gay kids are still disowned by their families and gay people are still victims of hate crimes at a much larger rate than other people. So while I wish they would have killed Paul off another way, because it does feel like an insult, with Ben having finally accepted himself getting gay bashed (I'm assuming he was a victim too), I still feel like it happens and it's important to show that hate crimes are still a thing.

I was so happy with the new and improved EastEnders. The scenes with so many people are amazing. The usual groups of people, who mostly interact with each other, seem a bit less strict. The approach to some usual soap rules is great. But I knew Paul was leaving so I held off my judgement. Unfortunately the man from the Archers has demonstrated his inexperience with gay stories. First he brings highlights the topic of public affection, which is fine, but rather gay specific, then he immediately solves it and sets up what appears to be a classic gay bashing. Why did Paul have to die anyway? And through violence of all thing? The new producer either does not understand or does not care about the extremely disproportional victimasation of gay characters.
I wish this would have been just the last of DTCs stories, but they way public affection suddenly became a topic, especially after the very public kiss in the Vic in front of Phil, and the way it turned out yesterday, it has to be the new guy's doing.
