Do you think there's any way that daytime soaps can cash in on the huge DVD sales market? They're clearly not going to be able to release dozens of season sets, each with over 200 episodes.
Do you think there is any way they could edit out particular fondly remembered storylines in a way that would make them even vaguely comprehensible? There would probably be a market for a DVD box set of the classic Luke/Laura rapemance, or the classic Todd/Blair rape storyline, or... have there been any classic non-rape stories? Those are the only stories I knew of before I started watching soaps. But if editing them down made the plotlines incomprehensible, that would be a disaster.
It seems unlikely, but I think DVD sales have not only changed business models, they've changed the way fans look at shows, and that may be part of what's killing daytime soaps when primetime soaps are still healthy. Once upon a time, coming in mid-show and having missed something was the only choice. Nowadays, people use DVDs to catch up from the beginning, and daytime soaps are the only place you're required to accept having missed a bunch of story. Not the only problem, but part of it.
Plus, DVD sales would improve profitability and hopefully make at least the better-rated soaps relatively safe.
