Oh, and I think I'll never forget the sight of Laura on a mechanical bull. Wait ... what?! I have to see that

Perhaps another reason to believe Vincent's exit might be temporary. Oscar Aerts is one of the contestants on a new season of Expeditie Robinson. Last year Ferry was one of the contestants and you might remember he first left to New York after the break-up with Menno. Later he left again when he was abducted.
Of course it's also possible Oscar really left the show and suddenly had time to be on Expeditie Robinson.
By the way, there's a new web app about the summer cliffhanger at www.gtst.nl/meerdijk. Every week you can find out more about what happened. The first mystery we got to solve was how Wiet ended up in that hot air balloon. We find out more about that rich guy and he seems a little crazy. He has a mansion in Ireland and we already know the show goes on location in Ireland It will air around the 25th anniversary of the show on October 1 (with an hour-long episode). I wonder if Lucas will be part of those Ireland scenes. I can imagine a few Meerdijkers go to Ireland to rescue Wiet. I assume Anna will be in those scenes and I believe Nina is part of it as well. It would make sense if Wiet's best friend is also there. Especially since Lucas was the reason Wiet got to know that guy through that dating app.

Shocking news: Ferry has been fired from the show. Apparently he didn't follow production agreements. This caused many problems for the filming schedule of the show. He will be gone before Christmas.

That is shocking news! And very sad. I can't believe it really. Maybe they will work out a solution?

In an official statement they said that the production of the show was more than once in jeopardy because Ferry repeatedly broke agreements...
It doesn't seem like this was an easy decision for the producers. Also because they know how popular Ferry and Lucas are.
I'm still kind of in shock actually. I do wonder what will happen with Lucas... A recast perhaps? Because it seems like Ferry's departure is very sudden so I don't think there's an exit story.

RTL Boulevard talked to Raynor: "This is a shock. He was one of the energy bombs of the young group. I think he's going to be missed onscreen."
Raynor's reaction to Endemol's statement: "This could be the only reason for him to get fired. Ferry is kind of a free spirit. In my time he was late one time because he overslept. When you're not filming for 5 minutes you lose thousands of Euro's. There are a lot of people waiting for that actor."
Raynor's experience with 'free spirits': "They're not Always very punctional. But also very hyperactive and enthusiastic."

And a reaction from Marjolein Keuning (Maxime): "I tried to call him. He is a fantastic fellow. Always cheerful. He is truly a treasure. Has made groundbreaking scenes. We will certainly miss him"

Seeing how Lucas is the show's most popular character, I'm hoping some negotiations bring Ferry back. But it's possible that Ferry was going to leave anyway since he recently got a recording contract and is appearing in a new movie.

Wow, I'm in shock. I wonder what the show is going to do, recast, bring on a new gay character?

From what I understand now is that Ferry has to film another 10 weeks after the summer break and then he will air for the last time in December. So perhaps Lucas will get a proper exit story. I still think it's possible they might recast the role after a while.

Is GTST on summer break (for filming) now? If so, when did it start?

I believe the summer break for the actors started at the same time as the summer break for the show. If that's the case then July 3 was their last day of filming.
I believe they usually have six weeks off. If Ferry has to film 10 more weeks then he would be finished in the week of October 19.

So it wasn't some recent event that was the final straw for Endemol. They'd been planning this. It might explain why Lucas wasn't given anything very involving this past season. Maybe the story with Vincent was supposed to lead to something more interesting, but they pulled the plug on it when they realized they wanted to get rid of Ferry. I'm thinking back to that time when Ferry was away from the show, came back for a brief time and then was gone again for a while longer. There might have been more going on behind the scenes than we realized.

Going to be awkward to still have to tape for 10 more weeks. Usually on American soaps, if you get fired you're done that day or the most, that week.

Often in this situation in the U.S. the actor is allowed the face-saving courtesy of announcing that he or she is leaving the show to pursue other projects. It's surprising how brutal this is considering how otherwise well-liked Ferry is. And he's done a lot for the show.

Oh, man. I go away for a couple of days and come back to this. I guess I'll have to think about whether I'd like to see them re-cast Lucas or just write him out. Does GTST re-cast characters like that very often?

Yeah, recasts do happen. Also for major characters. I don't think GTST is as recast-crazy as some other soaps out there though. These are the ones I remember:
Helen Helming (played by two actresses) Dian Alberts (played by three actresses) Govern Harmsen (played by at least three actors*) Job Zonneveld (played by two actors) Charlie Fischer (played by four actresses**) Morris Fischer (played by three actors) Milan Verhagen (played by two actors) Wiet van Houten (played by two actresses) Sjors Langeveld (played by two actresses***) Tim Loderus (played by two actors****) Bianca Bouwhuis (played by two actresses) Julia Loderus (played by two actresses)
*) A few actors replaced Wik Jongsma for a while because he was battling cancer. **) Aukje van Ginneken and Lieke van Lexmond were both permanent cast members but both of them had to be replaced temporarily. ***) Inge Schrama had to go on maternity leave sooner than expected. Sane Langelaar played Sjors for a couple of weeks. ****) Tim was played by a different actor for I believe two weeks after Beau Schneider's mother had passed away.
I'd say it's definitely possible they want to recast Lucas. Especially since they've had a few recasts lately (Bianca and Julia). But since Ferry has to come back to film 10 more weeks I think it's more likely that Lucas is going to be written out. Of course they could always recast him later after the character has been gone for a while (usually that works better for a recast). Or maybe those ten weeks are needed to cast a new actor. I have no idea how long it takes to cast someone for a role.

Statement from Ferry: "In the previous period I haven't been able to function well because of a drugs problem. Right now I'm working hard to get my drugs problem and the behavior that comes with it under control. I had a major confrontation with myself and I'm very sad about that. I regret a lot of things and right now I'm trying to do everything I can so I will be able to look myself and the people around me in the eyes again. I hope people will let me have the time to get out of this situation in a good and positive way."
I really admire his honesty. Many people in his place wouldn't be this honest.

I know it might be a naive hope, but I'm hoping the show and Ferry will eventually be able to work out a way for Ferry to continue playing Lucas. Of course, the show needs to protect itself against production disruptions, but on the other hand it's a much stronger show with Ferry's Lucas a part of it. It would be best for the fans, too, if Ferry is able to stay since Lucas is the most entertaining character in the show. It's not for nothing that he's the most popular character. It's true they could always recast Lucas, but Ferry embodies Lucas in a way that few actors ever embody their character. Ferry's Lucas has been an iconic character in the show's long history. Something significant will be lost if Ferry is banished from the show. If Ferry can get himself cleaned up and provide sufficient assurances to the show, I'm hoping they'll be open to talks with him.

That's very brave of Ferry to publicly admit. I am sad that has happened and hopefully he's getting the help he needs and can get things back under control.
I know at least on American Soaps, while rare, it's not completely unheard of for an actor that's been fired for drug or alcohol abuse to return down the line, but it's usually years later. Getting clean and staying that way is not easy, nor fast. So even if he becomes clean and the show allows him to come back eventually, you could still have Lucas off the show for a very long period of time, unless they recast.
While Ferry has certainly left his mark on the character and helped make him so popular, almost any role can be recast if you take the time to find the right actor. Though, the show might be better off just starting fresh with a new gay character.

Though, the show might be better off just starting fresh with a new gay character. I agree with this. I think it's possible to recast any role. Some roles are just more difficult to recast than others. I think Lucas is a really important character for the show. It would be great if Ferry can come back at some point but we don't know if that's possible. Or if Ferry even wants that. Putting GTST behind him might be part of a new start for him. With everything so unclear right now I would welcome the right actor as a recast. Perhaps it's best to have Lucas offscreen for a while first before any new actor starts playing this role. Usually that works best for recasts. I have thought about the possibility of a new gay character. A while back Ferry hinted at Lucas perhaps getting a new boyfriend. We've speculated about Rover being that new love interest. Maybe they will rewrite the story and have Lucas help him come out or something without it developing into a romance. They could Always do a Lucas/Rover romance after Lucas returns after a while. Played by Ferry or someone else.

I don't want it to be over with Ferry and Lucas. It makes me sad. So much is lost. The Nina-Lucas sibling connection, Lucas and Noud, Janine and Lucas, etc. It's true, though, that maybe Ferry needs or wants to get away from the show. I guess I need to just accept that it's likely over.

I suppose there's probably a good chance Ferry won't be back. On the other hand, the fact that he admitted his problem is a very positive sign. It seems like it would be hard to replace Ferry as Lucas, but I do think the right actor could make it work. Either way, I guess we have a few more months before we learn whether Lucas will be off-screen for a while (or permanently).
