Wow
I relate to this in so many ways, it's really quite hard to put into words how I've reacted to this. Thank you for posting it.

The "tribe", is another description of how the main character of the film is caught between two worlds (NYC vs. his hometown), being able to be "out" in NYC vs. being able to be "out" in his hometown. The young men in the main character's family from a century ago, had to give up the things, hopes and dreams that they may have had, so that they could help contribute to the future and success of their family's farm to what the main character had to NOW give up (a life in NYC) in order to do the same thing. That's how I perceived it to be. Yet, the main character may or may not be alone in his new future life on the farm, since he's made a connection with someone from his past, who also had to give up a future away from the town, because of his family. You don't get the story or You don't get why people like it No, I liked it and Ryan ois hoooot..but I didn't understand the tribe thing.
