Murdoch Mysteries (alternate title "The Artful Detective") 2008 - present (CityTV 2008-2012, CBC 2012-present)
Detective series set in Toronto, Canada, in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Toronto police detective William Murdoch solves crimes (mostly murders), often by inventing crude forerunners of later 20th or 21st Century technology and forensic techniques.
Detective Llewelyn Watts (Daniel Maslany) was introduced in season 10 (2016/2017) although viewers didn't learn of Watts' sexual orientation until Season 13, Episode 6 (November 2019) when Watts met local butcher Jack Walker (Jesse Lavercombe). Although credited as "recurring" Maslany appears in most (but not all) episodes in seasons 13, 14, and 15.
Jack Walker leaves Toronto for New York City towards the end of season 14 (2021).
Watts makes friends with Milo Strange (David Andrew Reid) in season 15 (2021/2022) but Strange rebuffs Watts' interest in a relationship.
The end of season 15 sees Watts leave Toronto for New York City. It wasn't clear to me if the writers were giving Watts a "happy ending" to be with Jack Walker in NYC, or sending him to reunite with Walker and bring him home to Toronto. [Season 16 premieres in Canada September 2022].
The series is a staple of CBC's drama programming, broadcast at an early hour, so Watts' romantic activities are more "said" than "seen" but that he's gay and that his relationship with Jack Walker was romantic is foretext not subtext. Prejudice against Watts (and Walker) is ongoing but Watts eventually finds tolerance among his immediate co-workers. Given that it takes place circa 1906 the prejudice seems more realistic than the tolerance...
