It seems Morangos com Açucar, portuguese series on Prime video has a gay storyline Is it a remake? I vaguely remember a show with the same name many years ago, but I don't think that had any gay characters - certainly no scene like that! It is a remake. Morangos com Açúcar was a very popular teen show in Portugal in the 2000s (it was shown briefly in Brazil as well) and they actually had a big gay storyline at one point. This new version is a co-production between TVI and Prime and certainly more dramatic. They had shot 3 seasons already. The first one is already out and the two remaining will be out next year.

I just started watching it on friday and the comedic and more lighthearted tone of the original is mostly gone. It's like they just took the name and the concept of it being a teen high school show... everything else is very different. Is also very large cast, so I don't know how much time they will devote to the supporting cast's storyline... we'll see

Hopefully they rotate the cast a bit more and give more airtime to the queer guys ... eventually ...

A couple of pics (nothing spoilery) from the limited series Ripley starring Andrew Scott, which was originally produced for Showtime but will now premiere on Netflix next year. Note that they call it a limited series so I guess there's no chance of a second season. I'm curious to see how they adapt the story because, as much as I love Andrew, he strikes me as far too old for the character at the stage of his life depicted in the source material. www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/ripley-release-date-photos-news

The #Kelmiro kiss has finally happened! The popular duo Kelvin and Ramiro, from Brazilian telenovela "Terra e Paixão", have finally confessed their love for each other. I don't follow the show but it was all over twitter and the show had it's highest rated episode as well... everybody was waiting for it.

Well, there are five Ripley's novels and he is not that young in most of them I know, but this series seems to be based specifically on the plot of the first book. The dynamics of what happens are quite different for twenty-somethings versus forty-somethings. I'm assuming they will address this difference with tweaks to the adaptation. I also wonder if the actor's age played into why it's being billed as a limited series, rather than one with the potential for continuing to cover the 4 later books in the series?

Time for an update on the gay/bi male-lead shows that were announced or in-production sometime during last year. Note: these are only the series where the principal protagonist is a gay or bi man - not every show with gay/bi male characters in supporting roles.
Premiere date set: - Big Boys S2 (Channel 4) - January 14 - Cristóbal Balenciaga limited series (Disney+) - January 19 - Reina Roja S1 (Prime Video) - February 29 - Young Royals S3/final season (Netflix Nordic) - March
Post-production, awaiting a premiere date: - Ripley limited series (Netflix) - filming concluded last year - Elite S8/final season (Netflix Spain) - filming just concluded - Mary & George limited series (Starz/Sky Atlantic) - trailer already out - Dead Boy Detectives S1 (Netflix) - trailer already out - Heartstoppers S3 (Netflix) - filming concluded last month - Chucky S3 Part 2 (Syfy/USA) - seems to have completed the second half of the season - Wreck S2 (BBC) - should have completed filming over the summer - Dead Hot S1 (Prime Video) - should have completed filming last autumn - Prisma S2 (Prime Video) - completed filming last summer
Mid-production: - Interview with the Vampire S2 (AMC) - I don't think they finished filming although they've released a teaser trailer which is probably material from the first few episodes
Status unclear: - The Deviant's War (Amazon) - Overcompensating (Amazon) - They Both Die at the End (Netflix) - Young Mungo (BBC) - The Corps (Netflix) - Uncoupled S2 (moved to Showtime from Netflix) - Fake Profile S2 (Netflix)
I know we've had a couple of strikes in Hollywood for much of last year but it's kind of depressing that there are hardly any additions to this list since May, plus a number of "status unclear" shows that I worry might have been quietly axed given the lack of news of production beginning. You'll also notice a number of shows that are either limited series or ending this year - and I fear that list will only grow this year with returning series like Chucky and Heartstopper looking like they may end with their third seasons.

I have seen a downward trend the last few years. It's depressing. Seems like every year there's fewer gay shows and gay characters. Meanwhile tv is overflowing with lesbians. It just doesn't seem fair.

It just doesn't seem fair. The ratio of male-to-female queer characters isn't that imbalanced, although women have edged out men in the last couple of years, only slightly. The real disparity is how those queer men are portrayed compared to their female counterparts when it comes to physical intimacy. There are still shows where a gay male couple cannot even kiss, while even the supposedly more reticent soaps and telenovelas are happy to show the female couples in bed together. Sadly, even as I write this, another show with a gay co-lead, The Lake, has been canceled.

Sadly, even as I write this, another show with a gay co-lead, The Lake, has been canceled. I don't trust the official numbers at all. I don't care what GLAAD says, I see lesbians on EVERY tv show. Seems like all tv shows these days have lesbian characters. I don't see the same for gay male characters. I am hoewver happy that GLAAD at least reluctantly admitted there are more lesbian characters on tv than gay (male) ones, which is obviously true. I also agree that lesbian characters are treated better than gay male chaaracters, There have been several shows that have both gay and lesbian characters (Station 19, EastEnders, Wreck etc), where only the lesbians are allowed to have sex. It's offensive, insulting and borderline homophobic. Not only are the lesbians allowed more explicit scenes, they also get more screen time and better storylines. It's not looking good this year, with several gay shows getting cancelled and few new gay shows have been announced. I am aware though that it's still early, things might change, but I'm not very hopeful. I'm not holding my breath.

I think it is 2 steps forward, one step back.
I saw an Interview, that Netflix and Prime, make changes in the storybooks, if the production wants their money, they have to add, make, at least one character of the LGBT Community, at least in Europe. And you see it, it is real, nearly every new show, had a least on LGBT character. That would be 20 years back, unbelievable.
What is not so good for us gays, that the other letters are currently more interesting than the G letter. But we should not play each other over, we don't need envy, jealousy. In the End of the day, it is for all of us, one step forward.
This is a success in general, because representation matters. For all kinds of minorities, for all groups.
What is currently a problem or not so good. That the representation goes back into stereotypes, asexually, token once, also depressing, and not likeable gay Charakters.
Also the sex scenes are not equal, again, like in the forgotten past, now mostly offscreen or with a lot of clothes on, even 2 gays shirtless kissing is not self evident anymore. Or not even a foreplay or an afterglow, the morning after, is shown in many cases anymore.
What is huge missing, the compensations. Missing is the good gay role models, onscreen. Especially for young, unsure, innocent Teenager. Happy gay guys, which have a sexual active life, which the viewers can look forward, look this could be my future life, there must be not a bad life, a bad future, to be gay.
But also in the End all characters, roles, belongs, should be played as Gay. We are no homogeneous mass, we are all individuals, the sexuality don't change a character, a soul. So as long there is a compensation, it is not a failure, to show all kind of gays, from hateful depressing, killers, to charming dream son in law....
Had someone believed last year that the Pope, will allow Gay Couples Blessings. Because of the pressure of the German, Europe Catholics. To make the practice, of Gay Couples Blessings in many Belgium and German Parishes, legal. It was unbelievable, but also here a success.
So I look good into future, there is hope, never know, what really brings the future. Maybe it is better, than someone thinks, now.

Didn't know this was coming. Looking foward to it It's actually been in the making for a while. It was originally commissioned by Showtime but they went cold on it and it got shopped around until Netflix picked it up. Then there was radio silence, so much so that I was starting to wonder if it was one of those shows that got canceled before airing as a tax write-off. Unfortunately it has been billed as a limited series so we won't see the other books adapted.

Would there be gay scenes? I don't think the source material had gay scenes but they are already tweaking the story here to make the characters rather older, so who knows what else they have tweaked?

There's a documentary series about Alexander the Great on Netflix named Alexander: The Making of a God. Some of the scenes are dramatized. Apparently they don't shy away from his gay relationship with Hephastion.
