We Are Who We Are is a coming-of-age miniseries from Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name). Premieres September 14
The show focuses on two American kids who live in a US military base in Italy while dealing with the typical issues of adolescence – friendship, first love and identity.
Jack Dylan Grazer stars as Fraser Wilson, a shy 14 year-old who moved from New York with his mothers. He begins a new friendship with Caitlin (Jordan Kristine Seamon), who everyone suspects of being his girlfriend.
However, Fraser is actually missing a boy from back home and he also reportedly strikes up a romance with an older soldier.

Did anyone watch this? It was on HBO this past monday. I liked it for the most part Jack Dylan Grazer is good as Fraser Wilson. Next week we should find out more about Caitlin (Jordan Kristine Seamon)

I haven't seen it (don't get HBO where I am) but the reviews are a mixed bag. Seems like the main characters are both queer, which is a plus, but the gay boy is very unlikable. I do appreciate that Fraser he knows he is gay and it's not the usual story of teenage sexual confusion. At least I hope it doesn't go down that route.
I do think it's probably not the wisest idea to center the story on a 14yo gay boy - played by an underage actor - during the present QAnon-led moral panic in the US. I'm surprised Luca Guadagnini made this choice considering the backlash - not just from bigots but also some LGBTQ+ community/allies - when CMBYN had a 17yo protagonist, even though that's above the age of consent in Italy (and many US states) and he was portrayed by an 18+ actor.

Maybe because the backlash is like a lot of things on twitter, a storm on a tea pot.
The film was a success

I enjoyed the first episode enough to want to watch the series. I agree that the gay teenager Fraser isn't a particularly likeable character but I thought there was enough going on with him for interesting story potential.
I was a bit disappointed with the second episode which retold much of the first episode but from Caitlin/Harper's point of view. I don't feel as interested in that character, at least so far.

To be honest this isn't really my cup of tea and I lost interest in it quite early on. I've kept watching though -more like, skim-watching- because I wanted to see who the soldier was who Fraser gets enamoured with. The latest episode (6) has soldier Jonathan bonding with Fraser and taking him to a bar (where Fraser has a sly look when they are both next to each other at the urinal) so I expect things to move pretty quickly on the story front now.
