New show on Netflix with a gay storyline. Sam is the gay character. There's another gay character too, his love interest.

Not the worst show I seen. I love the actor for Sam from Switched at Birth, so it is kind of strange seeing him in a gay role.
My one big complaint is how insane that they didn't go searching for potential farmland until months after they arrived at the town. Knowing the limited supply of food, that should have been one of the biggest priority for the kids once their new society had settled down after the first month or so. It would have made more sense if they mentioned that they been making periodic trips into the woods in search of land.

I started watching the show but they never did anything much with Sam in the first half of the season, where he served primarily as best friend to a female character. (Indeed, that was still his primary role throughout the season.)
The gay romance only begins in episode 7, peaks in episode 8 (I will credit them for the bed scene), and tanks by episode 9. And of course his love interest is not one of the regular characters.

And of course his love interest is not one of the regular characters. CONTAINS SPOILERS, highlight to read: I agree with you that the gay storyline was not a big part of the show, unfortunately. I wish they got more screen time. However, the little they did get was cute. I'm annoyed they didn't get a sex scene like all the other straight couples on the show. I commend them for at least granting them a bed scene though, which is more than can be said about the show Bonding, also on Netflix. It's ridiculous that a show about sex completely omits the gay guy's sexual experience. Anyways, I digress. The Scoiety is not perfect, same with the gay storyline. It was short, but still fairly good.
I disagree with you about a few things though. Grizz IS part of the main cast. He's part of the Guard. He is in every episode, as a regular cast member. He's hardly a guest figure. If anything I'd say he actually got more screen time than Sam. But yeah, you're right, not everything about them is about the gay romance. They have storylines outside of that. Also, the relationship tanks? I see if differently. They left it open but not without hope. Sam said he clearly wanted to be with Grizz. IF the show gets a second season I think and hope they'll be able to work it out. Yes, right now Grizz is mad at him, but it's obvious he cares about Sam and I do think they can make it work. Not without a huge amount of angst first though I think when he tells his best friend about Grizz she will think that she's being selfish and "allow" him to be with him. That's my guess anyway.

Yeah, I'm also pitch in on my disagreement on the love interest just being a recurring character.
Generally speaking, when the love interest is only a recurring or guest character, this is bad because they will have limited screen time, and almost no storylines away from the central gay character. They exist to be the love interest and that's it.
But the love interest in this case defies that categorization. He has a significant amount of screentime (perhaps even as much as or more than Sam) and is involved in multiple storylines away from Sam. In fact, he barely interacted with Sam until later in the season.
I agree that Sam is not a very interesting character by himself and if he was the only gay character, I would be disappointed. He has three roles on the show: best friend to Becca, victim of his brother Campbell, and minor member on the Committee on Going Home. He is never a driver of the story, always just the guy who is carried along.

Don't get me wrong, I also liked the little bit we did get. It was just too little and packed into a very short span of time (basically 3 episodes where the boys weren't the main or even secondary storyline). I guess I was mistaken about Grizz, I went off Wikipedia which listed him as recurring, not part of the main cast. I found that weird too because it felt like he had more airtime than Sam. But now I see Wikipedia has moved Grizz up to the main cast, and I'm too lazy to check the credits to see which is correct. The reason I tuned out was because they were doing nothing with Sam before episode 7 - he only existed as the gay BFF and (to a lesser extent) Campbell's brother. I didn't feel he drove story at all. Everything was about Becca or Campbell. (At least they gave us some variation in gay characters with Sam being deaf.) Grizz, although he's part of the Guard, doesn't really drive story either. Other members of the Guard had a lot more prominence. The little story he did get to himself was so cliched. Football jock who feels the need to stay in the closet - why not have him out and proud from the outset? Did we really need the 'twist' that he's secretly gay? When I said the relationship tanks, I didn't mean it had been put to bed forever - they definitely left it open-ended. But I was referring to them having only one episode of happiness before breaking up. That's just so rushed. I hope that, if they get a second season (and I think it looks likely), they will do better by these characters. Stop having LGBT characters play second fiddle to straight ones and be their own person and drive their own stories. Netflix just posted this:

Stop having LGBT characters play second fiddle to straight ones and be their own person and drive their own stories. Netflix just posted this: I agree with you that it was rushed and I wish they would have used more time to develop their storyline. They should have started the storyline in episode 1, not episode 7. They needed more screen time. And yeah, it was a bit cliche about the jock being closeted since the start. I'm happy we finally got a gay jock on a show though. It doesn't happen very often. Yes, I wish he was out as gay since the start, but it's still progress imo, because most shows refuse to depict that jocks can be gay too. This storyline is hardly perfect, but I give them credit for at least giving us a good story with the little we did get. Also, nobody died. If the show gets a second season I'm pretty sure they will end up together. Grizz came out, so he is obviously done hiding. We won't have to see him hitting on girls or pretending to be straight anymore, which is good. PS: Thanks for posting that video. It was really cute and it was nice to hear what the actors think about the storyline. They seem to be invested, which is good. At least this proves Netflix knows that the gay storyline made an impact, so who knows, maybe they just tested the waters in season 1 and Sam and Grizz will get a more fleshed out story in season 2 if there is one. At least we can hope

Did Grizz came out?? I thought the whole relationship is still kept secret between the two of them. Don't seem like any of the other characters know about it.

Well, he only came out to one person (Gwen). He told her he was gay, but he didn't tell her about his relationship with Sam. Speaking of Grizz, Netflix posted this:

Officially renewed for season 2, coming next year!
Here's hoping there will be more of a focus on Sam and Grizz next season. It seems Netflix knows they have a good thing going, so they should indulge fans instead of gay-baiting us.

I have a feeling they know what they have, that they're very popular. And yeah, they better get more screen time next season. I hope Becca and the baby thing is resolved quickly, but it probably won't be, sigh.

Since you already have Netflix, I would recommend scanning through the episodes for Sam/Grizz scenes, there are not that many (and it's mostly focused in the later episodes). If nothing else, it would help boost the ratings (particularly if it signals interest in a particular couple).

The main character is so annoying I have to skip through all the scenes with her, and everything that's midly interesting is given like no air time. I honestly don't know why this is getting a season 2, but I did read an article that it's basically netflix's formula to come out with two seasons of shows and then cancel them since two seasons is enough to drive people to the platform but beyond that it doesn't get engagement so it's basically just lost money. Also the Sam and Becca plot is annoying too like who cares that she got knocked up by some rando - why is pretending it's your gay best friend's baby and that you're a couple any better?? I hope they do more with Sam other than have him sacrifice his life because his best friend doesn't want to be labeled as a slut but I do not have hopes

I cannot believe this. After renewing it more than one year ago and being ready to film before Covid hit, now they have cancelled it? So cruel! The show wasn't great but Sam and Grizz were their breakout hit and both actors sold the romance despite the limited material/airtime they were given. It felt like the show finally recognized what a goldmine they had in Grizzam (well, at least their cast and whoever manages the show's Instagram account did) and I was hoping they would have more to do this season. And now it's all gone just like that. Mind you, perhaps we would have been disappointed; they didn't even upgrade Jack Mulhern (Grizz) to series regular for season 2.
