One of the incredibly rare occasions we get a gay male lead on a US TV show - and he's grieving the loss of his husband, and unlikely to have any kind of love life. Of course.

Well, he kissed a guy in the new episode, so it seems like they might give him a love life after all.

The gay husband thing isn't peripheral at all. The show revolves around three families, Harrison's (the guy who was killed) being at the heart of it. The two other families are the one of the cop (god i can't stand those) and the one of the woman running for the election of alderman of the 6th (i have no clue what this means, im no american, it's said in the show).
Harrison is the heart of the show, and him being gay and black, those issues are at the heart of the show and I think they are pretty well handled. They don't shy away from any of it. Harrison having been killed for being black, homophobia is not as big as racism. But LGBT themes are still big in the show: homophobia is mentioned, adopting while gay, transidentity (there's a non-binary character, way in the background but yay anyway), etc.
I really, really recommend this show. You're gonna cry, but I think they do handle those scenes pretty well. You do cry, but they don't make a point of making you cry. Yeah, this show isn't about a gay romance, but it's still about a queer family, about a gay man losing his husband, about a black gay guy being killed by a white cop, AND there are other LGBT people in the show still (the lawyer is a lesbian and she's married! the daughter's best friend is non-binary, there's also another gay teacher, etc.).
So this show does have a gay male lead. It just happens that he goes through something horrible, but that is still happening to many people out there. The story could have been written without all those LGBTQ themes, because this happens to non-LGBTQ families. They made the family of the victim a queer one and that's pretty great. (i've understood CBS is pretty conservative, so it's pretty big to have a show about racism and with such LGBTQ themes)

I thought the show was great, and I loved that they still explored Daniel's love life. Given the subject matter, they could have easily just ignored it. Instead, they had this lovely relationship sort of bubbling under the surface for the entire show and it was also a relief to have it, because as morningsun7 said, this show will make you bawl like a baby. Noah Wyle was absolutely outstanding, as was Aliyah Royale. Just wished more people watched it. A heartbreaking drama with a gay lead, really on point social/political commentary and a lovely relationship to boot. Should be tumblr bait but most people don't seem to realise it exists.
