I am excited about this show, but do the gays always have to be white, straight acting guys?

There's a trailer out. If I'm not mistaken this means there will be two gay characters on the show.

That's Brian J. Smith also, right? From Sense8 and War Boys?

This show looks like it could be great drama. I love that they're slipping a gay character into the whole spy thriller genre - I just wish he had a more prominent role than what's implied in the trailer. All in all, I'd say it's a pretty diverse cast - not least of which being that the lead actress is actually Indian (South Asian) - now that's not something you see everyday on US primetime (not since Heroes, if memory serves).

Its on youtube.
Im a bit meh on the show though. The ensemble mostly focuses on all the straight recruits, while the nerdy gay guy moseys around in the back.

Has the show even started yet? Maybe you get the wrong impression from just watching an 8 minute preview. I'm not saying you're not right, you may be. But the thing is... maybe we should watch a full episode, maybe even two, before making up an opinion. And please remember Rick Cosnett is joining the cast too, so there will be one more gay character in the cast. With all this said, if it's as bad as you say, of course it's not fine. I'm sick of barely there gay characters, it's a real problem. So many times the gay characters are either barely there and/or celibate and/or stereotypical. Just once I wish shows would focus on the gays, some shows have, and with great results, like Shameless and HTGAWM.

Im just saying that from all the coverage and previews and promotion Ive seen about the show, its all about the pretty blond straight group with Chopra at the center, sizing each other up and being a clique. The gay seems very token right now.
Also, I wouldnt be interested in seeing Rick Cosnett's character get involved with the main cast gay character. Rick's hot. Why do we get the half average couple, while all the straight relationships are made up of sexy starlets.

Seems like that character already has a boyfriend. I'm just saying that it's still very very early.. we barely know anything about the show, let alone the characters. I'm not even defending it, it might be terrible. I'm just willing to give it a chance, to wait and see. I'll watch a few episodes first.

Some random thoughts about the premiere:
The lead actress is very weak, she can't act. The show did well in portraying everyone as shady with several layers. You know you can't trust anyone. That said, I'm sad to see Brian J. Smith gone already. I like him as an actor, and would have liked to see more of him, oh well.. I guess I'll have to wait until Sense8 comes back.
Now for the gay character.. I have a really bad, and I mean AWFUL feeling about this. Since when does a gay guy not have sex with his boyfriends? My worst fear is that Simon isn't really gay. Just think about it.. the way he acts.. like he says he's gay every moment and doesn't hide, he's open and proud. Which I guess is not bad in itself, but it's just way too OTT. Like...it's all an act, like Simon is playing a character. My guess is that the gay thing is just a front. He's not really gay. The writers realized how offensive it would be to have a character pretend to be gay, so they added a recurring gay FBI agent as an apology (Elias Harper, played by Rick Cosnett), in order not to piss of the gay viewers.
The show in itself is just not very good. It's not the worst I've seen, but not the best either. I'll give it a few more episodes, but like I said I have a really bad feeling about Simon. Oh well.. at least Rick Cosnett is back on tv. I'll definitely tune in to see him.

I do have a bad feeling about this. But even IF it turns out that Simon is not gay, we'll still have a gay character on the show with Rick Cosnett playing Elias Harper.
