From Wikipedia:
Set in Stamford, Lincolnshire in 1996, My Mad Fat Diary follows the story of 16-year-old, 16 stone girl, Rae Earl, who has just left a psychiatric hospital, where she has spent four months. She begins to reconnect with her best friend, Chloe, who is unaware of Rae's mental health and body image problems, believing she was in France for the past four months. Rae attempts to keep this information from her while also trying to impress Chloe's friends Izzy, Archie, Chop and Finn.
This show is absolutely incredible. WBEZ (in Chicago, same radio channel as NPR) has called this show "the best television show you aren't watching," and they're absolutely right. This show seems like some typical show for middle schoolers, but it's not: it's so moving and deep, but also downright hilarious.
My Mad Fat Diary also has a gay character named Archie (Dan Cohen), who struggles with coming out. Below is a clip:

Archie had a somewhat graphic sex scene on the first ep.

And amusingly, he was screwing the actor who used to play Robert Sugden on Emmerdale - straight at the time but now bisexual!

I love Archie, he's cute and adorable. I'm sad the show has finished, but it was really good. I watched all of the episodes in one weekend
