Reading the worries on afterelton made me wonder how bad or good the track record of German soaps is in regards to gay storylines.
It seems that so far VL has a good track record with gay characters, much better than with gays than with lesbians (the main ex-straight wife of Carla recently went back to men and is now leaving the show).
The first gay, Gero, married his partner Markus and they left the show together though apparently he (Gero) returned for a botched storyline as a drug addict a few years later (though it doesn't seem like he had any romantic storylines as that before he was written off again).
Tom stayed very gay and always was gay. His biggest brush with heterosexuality was when he had a storyline about having a child with a female friend through insemination (according to the story descriptions they actually tried to have sex, with candle light and all, but Tom eventually announced that he was just to gay and they settled for artificial insemination). The storyline sounds extremely dreadful [apparently Tom's main story was to try to drive a wedge between his babymama and her boyfriend to secure access to his child, after which she left to be in Greece with her lesbian lover], but it didn't really impair his gayness.
Ulli, started out as straight, but never switched back, apparently waitied for Tom to come back to him in offscreenland (shades of JP&Craig?) and they are happily together in off screen land as seen during a special appearance in the 10 year anniversary episode.
Olli, calls himself bisexual, but all his significant on screen relationships have been with men.
Christian - only time can tell. Probably heavily depends on future contract negotiations
Then there are all the Lindenstrasse guys who are gay and gay and gay.
On AWZ, since the show is so new I don't think that there were any other gay characters before Roman? Roman is still very gay (mututally unsatsifying drunk one night stand with Anette which didn't result in any babies, yay!), Deniz, too soon to tell. It's certainly disappointing that they continued his coming out story by having him be with his female best friend. Only the future till tell what sexual direction they take him in. Whether Vanessa will end up being considered the fluke or whether Roman will be.
On Marienhof Mischa left because ex-straight Sülo wouldn't stand by him in public. Did Sülo go back to being straight? Or has he just not had any romantic storyline since then? Either way it doesn't seem like he is living his homosexuality and he doesn't have a romance or a storyline at the moment.
Then there was Verrückt Nach Clara which was a miniseries and not an ongoing soap (mostly known because the allaboutstrenght blog put up a youtube video of the story and love scenes of Paul and Simon). Just what I could gleam from the summaries it seems like a very convoluted. Clara is bascially the Grace/Carrie type. Paul is her gay best friend. He is shown to have a gay sex and social life. However they sleep together and he gets her pregnant. They move somewhere and Paul starts sleeping with the probably straight artist guy next door. Clara loses the baby. Simon starts sleeping with Clara instead. Paul moves on with another guy. I couldn't really tell from the summaries who Clara ends up with, in best friendness with Paul or with Simon (based on the summaries it seems that he was handled as a potential dream prince for her for at least a bunch of episodes), alone or with somebody else altogether. At the very least it seems like a straaaaange piece of television.
Anybody who can think of any other examples?
It seems that particularly lesbian storylines are even more likely to have the ex-straight one or bi one waffle between men and women for a while, even if she ends up with the girlfriend in the end.
