IMO there is nothing wrong with wanting characters to behave in a certain way, whether it is realistic or not. After all soaps are wish fullfillment and fantasy. Regardless of whether or not it would be more likely for somebody to hit back or to piss their pants in this situation, it really has on bearing on what they should do no soaps. On soaps they can do things even if they are unrealistic under the mantle of wish fullfillment, so there is nothing wrong with wishing for it.
I do want to point out that the road they chose doesn't feel unrealistic or out of character for me. (and it is worth noting that Olli brushed off a LOT when he was being threatened, beat up and tortured by mobsters during his last tenure and apparently never seriously considered going to the police; in fact, his way of getting out of that situation was to get Charlie to pay off the debt he had to the mobsters and then leave town; leaving it to Charlie and Cecile to get back at the mobsters and land them in jail)

In my experience, majority of soaps are hardly about fullfilling their viewers' dreams, they either specialise in withholding or if they grant you a wish you rather you never wished it.

But, as brownsugar points out: it appears most people behave exactly like we saw the guys behave. But, because it is a soap, I guess some of us were wanting to see a different kind of response from both of the guys. Failing that, we project ourselves into the scenario---only natural, I guess. But, as I said, I still loved the episode because it evokes strange feelings from me. And that is the purpose of art, IMO. Geoff

Geoff..I just realized you are in Fayetteville..howdy neighbor. *waves from an hour down the road* I'm always wishing something different for my television heroes and I will always say it. A while back I was spouting off that I hope they don't become door mats for the girls (guh...) and while it appears Christian will always be Judiths sounding board, maybe it won't happen afterall. I think it's just human nature to wish for things to happen on a show, especially when we invest ourselves into the characters the way some of us do. *ex..I was one of the biggest Brian/Michael fans around and I'm STILL not over that one. LOL* I am heavily emotionally invested in Christian and Olli and boy do I dread the day that TPTB decide to break them up... I may cry for days (months..heck I may not recover..heh).... *sob* But I will love them while I can.

After watching this episode one more time I actually like it, specially the writing. They could have done classical overemotional reaction like in Latin-American soaps, but they preferred a bit more sophisticated and realistic version. I think although that director made some wrong choices and Thore didn't played out nuances good enough. Because of that I was confused in first time, but after noticing details I'm quite satisfied.

brownsugar! Thanks so much for telling us this. I had no idea. I've never experienced this in my entire life. As I keep saying, I'm a rather big guy and basically can handle myself in most confrontations. No one, not even my fellow neanderthalisch high school students ever DARED to say anything to my face. They certainly never attacked me. So, I just tend to look at gay-bashing as a routine violent attack---which I would react to like any other. Thanks for the insight. It makes this episode even more poignant to me, now. Geoff You know what it is Geoff...as others have already stated, and LoLa has pointed this out very well in her posts...we so badly want SOAPS to go the way we want them to. We plan ahead as if we are writing the scripts. So when the gay bashing took place, fans didn't want to see character follow through or realism with Christian and Olli reacting the way many people actually do response in situations like these. No, fans wanted to see Christian in a mad man's rage, go grab the nearest metal bat, find Axel and then beat him into a coma. Which I truly understand and respect, but the result would have been an arrest for Christian, who wasn't the one attacked, Olli was, but he became an attacker. He already has a prison record, so a trial would in all likelihood lead to some type of jail time. And it's the end of Olli and Christian's relationship storyline as we know it, because how are you going to continue a storyline with one half of the story in prison?! We are so use to seeing in SOAPS hysterical crying and over-the-top angry rage and revenge plot line. The fact the writers/producers of VL chose to play this one down, and having Christian and Gregor call the police instead was a masterful stroke. But I'm sure this storyline is only getting started.

Aww... That's the second time in about 3 days that you've used the "hitting me over the head with a hammer" emoticon. Sooner or later I'm gonna start taking offense!

Tihkon, you're probably right ... no matter how clear the re-caps seem to be, and even after looking very closely ;D at the screencaps and Ivan's YouTube clip, I sometimes have a completely different understanding of the situation when I eventually read the sub-titles. That’s the thing about recaps… there’s only so much you can say/convey in a quick recap. Plus, I think you need the full picture (words, body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, et cetera) to fully understand and appreciate a scene, especially a rather emotional scene. I’m glad that Nanna’s subtitled clip cleared up any confusion/misinterpretation that some of you had prior to watching her clip. I can only imagine what it must be like to follow a TV show in a foreign language when you don’t (hardly) understand a word of what people are saying. I recently tried to watch a Japanese short film without subtitles (someone’s graduate project for film school), but I was at a loss from the very beginning (of course). Thank goodness, learning foreign languages (not Japanese, obviously ) at school is considered relatively important in many/most European countries!

I wouldn't have any clue at all if you didn't post them first. I'm gradually learning new words! I know the German for 'bye now. And yesterday I picked up a "Learn German" kit from the library. In four week's time I should be fully fluent. ;D
